As far as i know charlie brown is like his kid version, everything that happened to him was somehow portrayed in charlie brown´s life, his painful experiences and stuff
The whole line was, "'You know, that poor, poor kid, he never even got to kick the football. What a dirty trick — he never had a chance to kick the football!"
Poor Schulz-- I imagine that he knew he was going to die, since that last comic strip was published the day right after his death.
I thought it was strange that I cried too after watching this...I was so touched by the way he expressed himself so vulnerably. It must be really hard on him...thanks for uploading this. I wish i got to meet him in person, but he's resting in peacefully now in Heaven.
gosh he started in the fifties, he could have gave us an end where we see charlie and the gang all grown up and tell us the story of what happended... just an opinion.
I've been reading more about him lately... by many accounts, he was kind, shy, and genial, yet fiercely competitive and somewhat prideful, and also somewhat tormented by the past. I hope that he was, on balance, genuinely happy in his life. It would only be fair, since he brought so much comfort, empathy, and happiness into the world through his self-expression. You didn't have to be a genius to understand the things he was trying to tell you - and that's where his genius lay.
Though Charlie Brown never did get to kick the football, in one of the early 90's comic strips, he made the game-winning hit, and in full-panel weekday strip, he somersaulted to the front-porch of his house in jubilation. I've never forgotten being in my family's living room in my early teens and reading that.
No kidding? So do I! Being a cartoonist is also my dream too! Go to my channel page and highlight the link leading to my Gallery page on my Deviant Art account of my original creation: ToastBoy!
charles schulz is my hero. i grew up loving peanuts and i collect the peanuts holiday stuff. everybody has a little charlie brown in them, especially around the holidays. when i found out that mr schultz passed away i was emotional myself. i miss chales schultz.
This was filmed just a few weeks before Charles Schulz died. He suffered from Colon cancer and had had a few minor strokes prior to this interview...which I think aired on the TODAY Show and was his last. The stroke made him very emotional. It's sad to see him this way but with his reserve gone, also very touching.
i am not kidding about what i am about to say but charles schulz is my grampa. i would never lie! only because i love him and miss him very much! i love you grampa
@pptfreak If that's true, you're so lucky to have had such a grandpa. His work with Peanuts has been such an inspiration to me as a person. And Mr. Schulz is so far the celebrity I wish I could have met or write to to say 'Thanks'. In a few years, I really think I'll get a Snoopy tattooed somewhere on my skin! And later on, I wish I'll have the chance to travel to the States to visit the museum and pay some respect! :)
@pptfreak I didn't know Mr. Schulz was your grandpa. What a wonderful man he was. Thank you for bring Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang into my childhood. God Bless You! RIP!
hi - could you possibly tell me and other non-native speakers what Charles Schulz says here? My English seems to be a bit limited, and he speaks a little fast... thanks a lot from a Peanuts admirer (the best comic strip in the world)

Here Charles Schulz is talking about drawing the final Peanuts strip and when he was finished he thought, "That poor prick, he never even got to kick the football". Schulz almost breaks down with emotion and to call Charlie Brown "that poor prick" is quite strong language for Schulz to use in a public interview. I think it shows how closely Schulz identifies with this character who is among the most richly human and personally honest creations by anybody in the graphic arts, ever.
Further to my first note ... I know that Schulz's recent biography quotes him as saying "that poor kid...", but I just don't hear that. Maybe he did say "kid" and I guess those that knew him well will know best. Whichever it is, the deep sense of endearment he feels for Charlie Brown is clear.
His final interview. To absent friends... <:^(

Charles Schulz was a great cartoon-creator. I like the Peanuts so much, the Charlie Brown videos in you-tube was a good Flashback.
But now he is dead and no more Charlie Brown Cartoons coming.
But i understand what he mean, when he say:
,,Nobody drawing The Peanuts after his death"
This is his own World and a orther drawer can't never give the Peanuts the magic like Charles Schulz!
Dino63532 11 months ago
@Dino63532 charles schultz said that peanuts cartoons were separate from the strip. New cartoons have been made, but no new strips.

Being a cartoonist would be an awesome job, but if I knew I was going to die, I'd probably let my character do what he was prevented from doing.
RIP Charles M. Schulz. An amazing artist and voice to a whole generation.

I think he said, "That po-poor kid". The he stuttered a bit, and the words ran together, but I don't think he said "prick".
