With all the just praise for Stewart, Arthur, and Raines, let us not overlook the warm and endearing performance by Harry Carey Sr. as the President of the Senate, for which he was nominated for best supporting actor.
@PackerBronco I didn't know that. I didn't know his name but he plays a marshall (I think it's a marshall) in my favorite of John Wayne's movies, "Angel and the Badman." He's surperb in it.
thx,i saw this movie so long ago,its an example for the governements, what after 73 years still goes on,the big firms rules the countrys, nothing more, nothing left.
watching this in government class, and this movie should be shown to everyone in washington because maybe then, out leaders would realize that its not about them or money but about honest ideals and doing whats right for the people not their wallet.
@TheItsdima Very well put Thet. I think they get there with honesty in their hearts, some of them, but then get into that political bubble of privilage and they stop talking for the people of their states and talk for themselves. It all seems to be, as you said, about $ but it is also having that kind of power in their grasp for the first time. They don't want to let it go.
@MuscleDaddyCMH Claude Rains is a relic of an age where dialogue and delivery were all the film actor had at their disposal, and he was a master at that.
Its one thing to sit and watch this movie and comment on YouTube, but ask yourself, why did Frank Capra make this film in the first place? For money? For fame? Here's a better question, Why does this movie still appeal to the hearts of men so many years later? THINK ! Perhaps we should get out from behind the keyboard and do something, myself included.
For those of you who BITCH about the ending: you can't accept it because you don't want to. This was obviously a different time... a different era... when men had something called a conscience... when what was TRULY RIGHT tugged @ the human heart. Those principles have sadly been lost on the past 2 generations. They now resemble The Taylors. They are now people w/o a conscience... w/o a heart. They are wrapped w/in their vanity, ego, & the material. Hopefully the next generation will be better.
james stewart was great, but my favorite performance from this movie had to be claude rains as senator paine. incredible actor, and the ending where he runs back in shouting "Expel me!" is one of my favorite scenes of all time.
After watching this movie I feel I've been there with Smith. That's what a good movie does to you it completely captures to the point where "The End" becomes a reminder you were just watching a movie and not real life! James Stewart's performance was captivating and convincing. Very similar to Al Pacino's performance in "And Justice For All." There's just no good way to end this comment so I'll just stop typing.
Excellent movie! Yes, it's very Capra-corn, but it's still a very inspiring film. If only there were more Mr. Smiths in the world...or rather, there were more people who believed in the Mr. Smith within themselves.

Would be a much more realistic movie if it ended at 6:30 unfortunately. The ending after that is pure fairy tale.
