Is it possible to make a full (and even) rhombus prism sorta shape with this? I know the moulds are for shapes with flat backs, but could they be stuck together? I'm trying to make one of that shape and then possibly drill a little space in the middle before putting the two halves together to put a little light in.
PS: Is it REALLY that dangerous? I'm going to use goggles, gloves, a mask and do it outside and be really careful, but the idea that it can still be harmful kinda scares me.
@N3RDYG0GGLES You could try sticking them together, but the glue will show if the resin is clear. If you want to stick a light into a resin surface, you can drill a hole, although a better solution would be to take a small cylinder or length of thin PVC pipe, plug it with something, then wrap it with mailing tape. Then suspend it over your mold so that it sticks in the resin, but doesn't touch the front of the gem. Once the resin hardens, you can remove the cylinder and leave a small clea
@theproplady Well I plan on making the gem translucent like glass but a blood red colour. gonna have the light stick straight up through the middle to make it glow. Hopefully that can work then :)
How would you make ball resin jewels? Is it possible to glue two halves together or are there molds for that? Also, if there are, will there be seams? And how do you sand down seams without scratching the gem?
I know of artists who have lost their lives (COPD) due to working with resin & not protecting their lungs with a NIOSH mask specifically marked for VAPOR protection (not particulates). Please use these items, along with your Gloves & Eye Goggles & protect yourself, even outside. I did a pour two nights ago with Easy Cast (<3) & even though I was wearing these things my eyes were burning and lungs hurt the next day. Just want people to know how important it is. Cast on, fellow resin-lovers!! <3
Great video, but I object one thing; DON'T use plastic cups. Thinner in polyester resin will eat through them, though if you're lucky you're done when it happens. Heavier plastic containers made of polyethylene will not melt, paper cups work too. I always use wooden spatula to stir..
Slightly off the tangent; when using: epoxy, just as much care in ventilation is needed. Epoxy fumes are odorless, but do cause severe consequences in long-term exposure. It's actually worse than polyester.
@cetchance51 Just thought I'd let you know, you aren't just limited to resin specific dyes. You can also use ground up hard chalk pastels and as I've done and will probably switch to acrylic paints which are cheaper and have a waaaay more vast array of colors than just the resin cast dyes. So far I've used two different types of acrylic paints to color my resin and they've all turned out fine, i.e. no discoloration or anything funky. You can also use mica powders as well. Have fun! :)
@cetchance51 I have used everything from nailpolish to paint, even some crushed eyeshadow, just dont add to much!! just mix a little drop at a time into the resin, if you mix to much your resin wont dry enough and it will become sticky. It's just trial and error, practice makes purfect.
@savannahmorrison Hi, Savanna! Don't know if you know about Castin' Crafts' product wherein you don't need a catalyst. It's two separate bottles and you measure them in a one to one ratio. Hope this helps! :)
I am wanting to cast coins in pendants, how will I prevent the coins from sinking to the bottom when I want them to set in the middle of the pendant? (so front and back are evenly divided width when coin placed in middle) Is there a way to let the top layer dry, then set the coin on and then pour the rest on? If I do that will there be a visible line on the side (would it look mended together) Would polyester or epoxy be better for that? (I am a novice and have no idea what I am doing) Thanks!
I just have one quick question: Is there any chance of the shortening my lifespan? There is an item I want to make, and this seems like the perfect way to do it, but if it means my life will be shortened, it's not worth it. I take it I should wear a mask while doing this, and should I set up some fans (I'll be doing this outside) too? Thanks!
I thought I put a safety disclaimer on this video. (I really need to remake these since I discovered EasyCast epoxy resin. I hardly ever use polyester resin now.) And yes, you should probably do this outside.
It could be dangerous, if you don't do it right. If you do this outside while wearing a protective mask and gloves, and wash up properly after you're done, you should be okay.
If I wanted them more liKe beads to use as a necKlace or something else then are there certain molds that I should use and how do I Know what color I get before trying them all out unless I have to try the colors myself to Know. This was really cool. I thought they were harder to maKe.
Does it give you an increased hunger of milkmaid caramels? 'Cause that's what I've got. (Of course you always want to work with this stuff in a well-ventilated area. Duh.)
Well, it's a good thing my microphone is crap, prompting me to do things this way--although I'm grateful I don't have to try and explain things verbally-I have such bad stage fright. ^_^
i found this vid watching resin videos, and im like wtf. resin jewelry? is that fashion that you can smoke? hahaha X)

is it possible to make 3-D gemstones, rather than ones with flat backs? i'm sure that would require a specific type of mold

can you use food coloring or do you need to buy a specific dye?
cetchance51 2 years ago
You have to buy resin specific dyes, which you can find at some craft stores along with the resins themselves.

thanks :)

@cetchance51 Yeah, nothing water based. Water makes the resin cloudy.

It's usually sold in small plastic bottles where the tins of resin are sold.

i'd advise using an organic mask with this as far as possible, i used it for a school project and it's REALLY REALLY noxious @_@

I've been qurious lately how to work with resin and molds.
Though I do have one question. Do I need to use the mold releasing spray on the molds specifically designed for resin? Cause if I do, that sucks...
timexhydes 2 years ago
You don't need to . (Although it may make getting the gems out of the molds a little easier.)

Epoxy resin will work with silicone. Clear polyester resin, however, will not.
I just use regular rtv silicone...

I thought you would be interested, not sure which one you are using:
Diethylaniline-N,N has the following potential health effects:
Rapidly absorbed through the skin and lungs - effects may be delayed. May cause eye, skin, and respiratory tract
irritation; central nervous system depression with nausea, dizziness, and headache; blood effects with blue
fingers, nail beds, lips, nose, and ear lobes progressing to coma and death.
It may also increase your sexual drive.
