  • You're still working right to left which is only a bit better than the original method. To do these in your head quickly, work from left to right. Let's do that with the example. 3 x 1 = 3, then multiply by 100 (add two zeroes, very easy) = 300. 3 * 4 + 1*2 = 14, then multiply by 10 (add one zero). Add the two together 300 + 140 = 440. Then do the ones digit, and add it on 2*4 = 8 + 440 = 448. Working this way is much easier and natural. No "carry over" needed.
