Your suppose to measure an inch above your belly button! That is how your suppose to measure a waist for women. For men you measure around their hips because that is where their waist appears.
Deeplydeepali- Yes, my mom who has sewn forever, too, says that. The doctors & medical arena have a slightly different definition of where to find it.
My suggestion that I stick by is this: wherever you start measuring, stay measuring at that location. Don't switch back and forth or change up from measurement to measurement.
I'm glad to have everyone's comments! Thanks everyone for stimulating the conversation!
I'm not sure if this is right...My belly button is directly aligned with my hip bone, I'm pretty sure you're supposed to measure where the crease is when you bend to the side which for me is about an inch above my belly button.
@DiamondLiaisons The same thing happens for me. I'd say a few things:
1) I'm still recommending at belly-button level
2) Saying that, you can still pick to do the level where you bend to the side. Whichever you pick, I'd say be sure you stay consistent and keep measuring at the same spot from here on out for accurate comparison &
3) Experts are now (ironically) recommending neck measurements as part of your BMI indicators, so maybe throw in some neck measurements then and now to compare, too.
dang, for some reason when I measure around my belly button that is the smallest measurement i get but it's like 3" bigger if I measure down by the top of my shorts. Eh weird
@samakaballer Both the larger bulge and down by the top of your shorts can increase & decrease in size, but the belly button is (unfortunately) the main measurement location.
@ericaj58 Health professionals will use the belly button as a "built-in" guide. You don't want to go to the slimmest part since that's subjective and a little biased.
Plus, Type 2 Diabetes uses waist measurement as an indicator, like Girls: waist over 31.5 inches = at risk. If waist measures 35.5 inches or more = in the highest risk category for type 2 diabetes. (If you want guys' measurements, let me know.) So go with the belly button & any further questions, feel free to comment again.
@CustomizedWellness Hi, my bone structure is pretty big. I am currently like 5 inches above 35.5inches, but i dont look fat. i am 6 feet 7 inches and my weight is, well hehe...163 pounds. so i dont know, i have muscle and heavy bones as well. how can i reduce this size for health reasons because it scared me what you wrote.

my mother, whose been sewing since she's been a child, says the waist is the smallest part of the trunk. but hey, could be wrong
deeplydeepali 1 year ago 3
This is wrong. The waist measurement is the smallest measurement around your trunk just below the rib cage.
