How the heck do you condense superheated steam of that temperature with air cooling? Turbine condenser design? Also, the temps on the outside of those pipes have to be greater than the 1000F mentioned, and the concentrated sun can't be uniformly distributed on the surface. Won't thermal stresses cause major issues?
I was a navy reactor operator for a decade, I'm just curious.
I am as much in the dark as you are. However I have a feeling that the tubes you see are not necessarily metallic... The actual tube might be glass on the outside and some black metallic pipe on the inside... I've see something like this in the household solar water heaters.
And why would I want to condense superheated steam when I have a turbine attached to get the "work" done :)
Looking good. Sounds like a good use of desert areas.

I wonder why you don't hear about this more often? Oh... wait... it's because BP's too busy filling up the news (and the oceans) xD

Its great idea but be prepared for issues caused by Oil and power companys that will do everything to make this impossible

why is it that these square mirrors create circular spots of light on the towers?
fbrad1 2 years ago
@fbrad1 Maybe because the sun is circular and not square
