That wasn't smearing blue shit all over the screen. That is how you scan and read the information and instructions "code" for the vic 20. You would use this when you've just finished creating a program and want to check it for errors. That might have been in machine code instead of basic.
Man I remember this commercial . I use to own a commodore VIC-20 computer plus the tape drive that you needed for the programs you made . My power supply died and the cost for a new one was not worth the price of replacing it .

@snake2006 The VIC-20 never "bombed" -- it sold quite well, although sales were not on par with the C64's. And you have to understand Commodore didn't "cripple" the VIC intentionally. RAM was still very expensive when the computer was designed.
@SaganAppreciationSoc Apple 2 was FAR more expandable. Lots of slots. More memory. I have something in my head that Apple 2 had more colours also, but not definite. I know woz was the first to integrate colour properly.
Even though computers were totally great, that commercial made games look like a product designed to cause stupidity. It made the Atari 2600, Coleco Vision, and other consoles look like I.Q robbers as well as a machine designed to "dumb down" the American. Now I can see (one of the reasons) why video games crashed. In other words, this commercial sucks.
Someone answered it on the comments of another Commodore commercial (they used the same song at the end of each one). I quote:
"The music is by Johann Sebastian Bach, it is part of the Well Tampered Klavier. The individual piece is Invention #13 in A minor (BWV784). This piece ROCKS! I love playing it on the piano."
still can browse internet with vic20!

Your right but still that low of RAM isn't much to work with.
I had a Vic 20 then moved up to the C64.

is there a way to expand the ram so you can make more complex programs?

Commodore 64 was still much better.
It wasn't crippled out of the box like the Vic 20.
snake2006 3 years ago
@snake2006 well I think all the Commodores computers are great. especially A500, A600 & A1200

@joecassara
I never said the Vic 20 bombed.
But it was crippled. You had practically nothing to work with Ram wise.
Atleast the 64 gave you allot of ram for the time to make complex programs.
But you had about 3 k for the Vic, what the hell good is that?
snake2006 1 year ago
The Vic 20 sucks unless you buy the 48k ram expansion cart.
Christ only shipping with 5k of RAM, and then only being about to use 3 because of Basic taking the rest was a stupid idea.
No wonder it bombed when C64 came out, atleast you had enough ram to accomplish something.
snake2006 3 years ago
The Vic-20 was in fact, much better than the Apple II family for many things. The only thing they had going for them was higher res than the Vic-20.

Most programs were on cartridge......with expanded RAM usually 16 or 32K which was actually a decent amount.

As I thought about it, it's actually a pretty good commercial. I just didn't like how they made games the reason for stupidity.
