  • Great Song Thanks for uploading

  • boy that's some fancy song you got there

  • ricky skaggs and kentucky thunder august 26, 2011 watseka theatre watseka illinois

  • Earl Scruggs is THE MAN.

Never could understand just what Lester Flatt

had to do with it, (except he could sing a little).

  • Steve Martin is very good, but Mr. Earl Scruggs has him beat. Perhaps with a few more decades of practice Steve may be close.

  • lol at the guy laughing at the end

  • @Rxdvd thats lester flatt

  • @MrBanjoman32 i'm pretty sure that Earl

  • @fdgd380 at the very end its lester flatt laughing

  • @MrBanjoman32 lol i new that i thought you was talking about the with the banjo now thats Earl lol sorry bout that

  • The "Great " Mr. Scruggs, to this definition I agree. His skill will never be equalled or supassed and not yet anyone to step in and carry the trade. FN Roni Stoneman was close with massive talent and played the same style. Steve Martin is trying to continue the tradition and had Mr. Scruggs at a few venues ta boot; This song is true country music Not country POP or trash as is today!

  • this is great! it’s a shame that most young folks don’t get it. a lot of kids seem to want to hear that damn rap or hup-hop rubbish.

  • who's the gentleman on the slide guitar?

  • @freddo27 Josh Graves on the Dobro (slide Guitar) Jake Tullock [sic] on the bass

  • @APSTTGTO Appreciate it.

  • Look up the Sleep Man Banjo Boys,, they are a band of young boys who play this style of music and they are soooo good! they have lots of videos on youtube.

  • pass them biscuts.

  • Just saw this and many other episodes with netflix. sweet stuff

  • @BizzleLop you some kinda gay er sumthin?

  • an amazing 1 microphone recording.... audio wizardry!

  • Tony Rice Unit comes to the watseka theatre watseka illinois on may 7, 2011. marty stuart on july 2, 2011.

  • The Flatt And Scruggs are my favorite bluegrass band.

  • I can't find many original recordings of bluegrass like this one on Youtube. My favourite bluegrass album I bought this year is "Classic Bluegrass from Smithsonian Folkways", just the best from a bunch of artists.

    Check it out.

  • Doesn't get better than this!

  • IMHO, actually they were supposed to play "Farewell Blues" and Earl accidentally played "Fireball Mail". That's why everyone in the band is laughing and smiling.

You can see Curly looking at Earl, wondering what just happened. I think Earl said it was a request on last minute, just a a joke. It's so easy to start off on the wrong song. These guys pulled it off perfectly, and boy am I happy it happend , 'cuz Josh Graves smiles so cute on this!

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL Hey CC - in case you haven't heard there is a new DVD out of Lester from 1971 with Josh, Paul, Haskell, Roland, and Johnny Johnson available form Bluehighways TV website. Picture and sound is perfect. Josh plays Hound Dog Ramble and Flatland Two Step and there is a couple of comedy skits. There is around 18 or 19 songs. You need to get it - you won't be sorry. He also plays guitar on about 3 and dances with Lester on Ballad of Jed Clampett. Feb 15, 2011

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL Go to Bluehighways Tv and click on store and you'll see DVD -clik on it and look below and you will see list of songs.

  • Which cottonpickin' assholes rated this great music with 7 "dislikes". Y'all should have your heads and hearing examined ! This is the best music that ever happened.

  • American Made...Bluegrass...a Southern Original! Go Earl Go!

  • @55457trevor Doubt it

  • Love that tune with Uncle Josh Dobro sound - thanks for posting !

  • I NEED A SMOKE AFTER THAT!!

  • @supersnakegtr You can light it off Earl's banjo! It's on fire!

  • Check Earl out, he looks like he's ticked off about something or he feels bad or something. Excellent piece, I'm learning it now.

  • @bomark2002 He's not ticked off. He is amused. The reason? Flatt introduced it as another song. After this clip Earl explained, saying his sister and her husband requested it at the last minute. I have the video this is on.

  • @pegcage what's the title of this video. I would like to see if I can get my hands on it.

    thank you

  • @toutnu...Hi . This video is on Volume 2 of The Best of the Flatt & Scruggs T.V. Shows. There are 10 volumes with 2 half-hour shows per volume, and I have 'em all. Available from The Country Music Hall of Fame's website. And I highly recommend them - they are all FANTASTIC.

  • ermmm... all you speed demons out there...

    Notice Earl's tempo..

    Please take note.

  • Cabrez-vous. Retontissez. Culbutez dans le feu de camp.

  • Not a single one of these modern C&W players can hold a patch to these old time pickers and musicians. Earl Scruggs is the best there ever was and probably the best there ever will be! Can't improve much on just about perfect.

  • Ji HAAA..since I was a kid I liked old western movies and always listened to his music you like to hear the great Earl Scruggs

  • Thanks Earl, many hours of joy you brought me, listening to you play :) .

  • Awwww good ol' bluegrass nothin can beat that

  • sounds like LINDA LOU by bill monroe

  • "Fireball Mail" is so GREAT the way they play it. Fun to play too. If it aint familiar, you oughta learn it, 'cuz it's an old standard. Anyway, you gotta admit , no one can make this song sound so good like Earl and Josh can!!

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL Type in Curly Seckler and there are some videos made in 1992 of Josh with Chubby Wise, Benny Martin, etc. that have just been posted.

  • Dagone! Pick it! xD

  • appreciate the perfection

  • whos that on the dobro???

  • @Master100Mind-..That's Uncle Josh Graves on the dobro.

His given name is Burkett Howard Graves. Born in 1927.

    ++Ain't Josh the greatest ? **

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL yes the greatest of the greatso is earl scruggs

  • I like how Earl messes up the kick off.. and and everybody starts grinnin behind him...even the masters make mistakes

  • @cmlawson16 they were grinnin bacause Flatt had introduced "Farewell Blues" and Earl changed it to "Fireball Mail" on his own at the last minute. You can see it on the Flatt & Scruggs show that you can get off Netflix.

  • @GenomeSoldier87 Go get drunk and pass out in your fuckin teepee you red alcoholic piece of shit. I'm here to listen to great music and fuckin idiots like you get on here and start shit. Go die in the gutter behind your reservation's casino. USA FOR LIFE!!!

  • @GenomeSoldier87 obvious troll is obvious

  • hoo lawd thats pretty music

  • Modern-day bluegrass outfits can do their best as they see fit, at what they regard as their own expression-session & interpretation of what they regard as 'Bluegrass" music .. BUT .. 'far as I can see .. nobody ain't never goin to put out top-of-the-line, best-quality blugrass product again, like this band did .. week after week, year after year. These guys were a 100% peerless once-in-a-century phenomenon.

  • i wish i had this music when i drove my 47 chevy....

  • Just listen to how GREAT Earl and Josh sound ! Earl's style is the envy of every banjo-picker on the planet. And Josh was just the ULTIMATE dobro player---

the ten-star inventor of bluegrass dobro !

  • Talor Swift should be on YOU PORN!

  • See now this is good music to do the Clinch Mountain Backstep to.

  • Listen to that old Granada......THAT is the holy grail of banjo tone!!

  • im 22 and love this. i wish we could have more bluegrass. i just discovered them. amazing stuff. this was when you had to have real talent. i am downloading a lot of their songs and watching them on you tube.

  • I wish this music was still prominent today, the world would be a better place!

  • @AsphaltCowboy57 .....Amen ! We all need to keep bluegrass alive. This band is about the BEST ever, and man, they really knew how to dress nice !

  • Perfect and with that Dobro Guitar -nice touch !!!.

  • A wonderful lively upload. Thanks to you and to melodyl52 who shared. Stars and hugs..Jan and Susan ♥

  • Your video gave me a smile at the end of the day. Thank you :)

  • Please post the Crawdad song by The Flatt and Scruggs.

  • @sponyge Yes, I hope someone can post "The Crawdad Song"....If not , Josh & Jake sing it great on The Flatt & Scruggs T.V. Show, Vol. 5. It's magnif !

  • Lovely playing and noticeable its not at breakneck speed - they let Fireball Mail "breathe". I''ll have to start playing that one again!

  • What is it about Earl? I've played Firebail Mail 80 million times on my banjo and my best version will still never sound as good as Earl's worst version. The guy was just born to pick the 5-string...

  • I could never know what the Martha White Show was back then. There are alot of Porter Wagoner jokes regarding this show. They sure had alot of real talent. These guys are extraordinaire 10 Stars

  • Soooo smooth. He was the best! Check out my banjo videos on my channel. I learned from listening to Earl play every day of my life for 44 yrs.

  • @banjovi1953 I checked out your videos...You are very good banjovi....Just like Earl..Earl scruggs would be proud for you to play his banjo!

  • Boy Howdy pick my teeth and pass the moon shine iam home

  • Those fellas could really play. Best I've ever heard. Sure enough!

  • I need a hat like Josh is wearing.

  • @MandoThrasher Yes, the hat looks awesome !

  • Stereo and Multitrack recording were not even invented

  • there is only one mic because of the technology (or rather lack there of) at that time

  • @williestots Only using that one mic, Yes,.... because of the technology. ..Hard to believe there was such good audio equipment back then.

  • @williestots They have mics set all over the place. There's several infront of them you can't see...and a couple of guys runnin all over the place with them trying to get it as good as possible.

  • i am a bassist in a funk metal band and this song is so awesome for some reason love it!

  • Brilliant! Only one mic. and it sounds so good.

  • @johnniescarlett ....I guess it looked neater to use just that one mic. Incredible !! ... Reckon they didn't need the 2nd mic at the other end of the stage.

  • @johnniescarlett ...Yes that one mic is superb! No matter what an electronicsGEEK thinks, alot of things are NOT obsolete a month after you buy 'em. This vintage show is awesome !

  • LOVE it!!

  • Taylor Swift would be intimidated by a single condeneser microphone.

    *Ray*

  • @Ray50005 lol....She would think you were speaking spanish even mentioning it...But yet she's entertainer of the year or whatever this crap they're giving away these days is called.

  • Earl had ''the roll''. So smooth and dynamic!

  • Hellz yeah great foot tapping music right there!

  • love this shit!

  • This is the best kind of blugrass. Taylor swift's got nothin on this guy

  • taylor swift aint got nothin period.

  • @hungrooster She sings off key and can't play a guitar...Boy that has star wrote all over it..Course in today's "country" garbage that's what the qualifications are I think.

  • taylor swift doesn't play bluegrass. that's pop music with a fiddle

  • @fishgutdumper ur exactly right..this new so called "country music" is nothing but garbage..bring back the real country

  • @fishgutdumper hell yes, most modern american and Australian country is basically pop music anyway, I don't think half of it deserves the title country:) bring back the good stuff:)

  • @fishgutdumper i know....people are stupid enough to compare taylor swift to this music. =][=

  • @fishgutdumper Thats The Greatest Comment I've Seen On Youtube...hahaha

  • @fishgutdumper Contemporare 'country' - as I always call it. =P

But yeah, it indeed is just a standard rockband with a few bluegrass/country instruments added in.

  • @fishgutdumper amen!!!!

  • @fishgutdumper Taylor swift plays country pop... This is bluegrass, that is country pop. The sky isn't green and it isn't falling either.

  • I knew Josh as we shared the same hometown, Maryville, TN, although Josh was raised in nearby Friendsville, he lived in Maryville in his later life.

  • These guys were the best band there ever was.

  • Finest bluegrass ever! Don't get no better than these guys!

  • No one can choke a dobro string like Uncle Josh can !!! AWESOME !

  • On Josh's 1st break you can really get a good look at the 3 wound & 3 unwound strings. He gave me a set of John Pearse strings like he used and told me to try but I'll save them forever as a good memory.

  • That's cool. I wonder if John Pearse strings are still available ?

  • They are available I know from First Quality Music. They are called "Uncle Josh" set and are part #3050. It has the026 unwound 3rd string.

  • @olehoundog1 , do you know what COLOR Josh Graves' eyes were? Thanks, you are a good egg.

  • No, I do not - I am not good at noticing people's eye color, just ask my wife. Can you tell on the color video of New York Town and Flint HIll Special that is on You Tube?

  • @olehoundog1 Thank you ; I will look and see.

  • what do you mean was? he still is! old Earl is alive an kickin!

  • he was so good on that banjo

  • this is cool, we got love for Earl in the Netherlands!

  • These performances are so rare these days, but still do exists! Keep this kind of music alive, people, it's great and if you can play like this, you truly have talent. Not to say you don't have talent to perform other types of music...but there is just something so classic, so meaningful about this kind of music. :)

  • .. perfect gentlemen the way they share the spotlight - those were the days....

  • Anyone know how TALL Josh Graves was? Or maybe you would know how tall either Scruggs or Flatt was ? ? Thanks.

  • @CARROLLCTYDOBROGIRL My guess would be about 5'6". I had my picture taken with him about 20 years ago and I'm about 2-3" inches taller. I'm 5'9". By the way the best quote I've ever heard from Josh was when I asked to take the photo. Quote" Let me go out to the van and get my teeth son ,I left my real ones in a bar in Canada"

  • @redneckwhisperer...Thanks! Awesome story!

  • listen to that hillbilly laugh in the end

    goofy?

  • Love Earl Scruggs. He keeps that deadpan look when he's jammin his best. Like he's not even trying.

  • Love how musicians can do that, I'd be contorting, blinking and sweating buckets.

  • @mullerheinrich lol.....I don't think he had to try very hard back then

  • My last name is Scruggs!

  • . . . still I have great memories with Uncle Josh. We were touring in Europe with him and Kenny Baker in 1989.

  • Uncle Josh FTW!!!

  • Awesome!

  • love it..!!!!

  • This is music gentlemen -oops and ladies also. I was raised listening to this.

  • So genuine music.I love it.

  • The reason Josh is laughing is that Lester introduced the song as something else. I have this on DVD. Earl explained afterward that his brother-in-law and sister requested Fireball Mail at the last minute. Lester was not advised! If you like these, order the DVDs. They are great!

  • I wondered ..... because at the very beginning he makes a little mistake on his beginning notes. His mind is distracted! I'll bet he is thinking he forgot to tell Lester and it just hit him at that moment! (Or he is playing with Lester's mind and pulled a fast one on him!)

  • im learning this song right now in my banjo lessons

  • IS That Oswald On the Dobro???

  • No, That's Uncle Josh Graves On The Dobro.

  • This is so good, it makes we want to learn how to play the banjo.

Love the way Earl pushes the guitarist out of the way when it's his turn.

  • There are 2 microphones. In this clip, you can't see the 2nd mic on the other side of the stage. The only way I know is because I have the video. Sharing a mic can be awkward, but they manage it quite well ! What CAN'T they do well ???

  • ***DOBRO PLAYER***

  • Everyone is great in this video, think what a great sound if recorded with the present technology.

They only had one mic, but it still sounds great.

  • hi.

  • If you can't hear musical truth in Flatt and Scruggs, you need to donate your ears to science, they're not doing you any good.

  • Preach it BROTHER!!!

  • Timeless bluegrass. So sweet.

  • makes we want to break out my banjo!!!

  • mee too

  • sick

  • Whenever I search The Foggy Mountain Boys up they never come up.

  • sponyge: Search Flatt and Scruggs

  • Prewar sound ! WOW

  • They may be union station. Maybe not.

  • Earl made banjo-pickin' look EASY. He & Josh on dobro, both masters of their art. This really takes me back.
