  • hans zimmer made both themes

  • In what possible way is that ironic?

  • Y gladiator is older than pirate of caraïbe

  • I immediately heard the similarity when I saw gladiator for the first time 1 day ago.

  • Gladiator has a much better soundtrack it has several awesome songs when pirates has only one song which makes it as ridiculous as indiana jones. And pirates is a fucking children movie and it sucks Gladiator on the other hand is awesome

  • Like POTC version better.

  • Each soundtrack fits it´s movie better. Gladiator's in POTC would sound too serious. POTC's in Gladiator would sound too gay.

  • @OldMiserMM are you saying pirates of the carribean is gay bitch!!!!!!!!

  • THATS EXACTLY WHAT I HEARD thats why i searched this

  • Let's see . . . Badelt worked on Gladiator (he composed some of the tracks albeit not this one) and Zimmer influenced/oversaw Pirates 1 - so much so that they jokingly wrote "Overproduced by Hans Zimmer" in the credits. Call it unoriginal if you want, but Pirates is an improvement over Gladiator. That being said, Gladiator also has several really good tracks that don't sound anything like this, so I can't say that the album is necessarily worse; just this one song.

  • Gladiator > Pirates.

  • I'll be honest, I've always like POTC theme better, but in a real life or death scenario like war, there's not much out there better than Gladiator's theme. Just goes to show the amazing talent that it takes to convey two completely different tones with an extremely similar set of songs.

  • Zimmer made the major themes while Badlet filled in the rest, so I hear.

  • Zimmer went and pulled a Williams.

  • the director wanted Zimmer to do the score, unfortunately he didn't have got the time, so he gave the job to a friend and former employee and gave help and permission to use the gladiator theme as a base.

  • Klaus Badelt is Hans Zimmer's apprentice

  • I love both. While the tune is recognizable, the tone of each fits with its respective film. And both add just the right amount of epic to epic moments.

  • Awesome scores :D never forget when I was watching Gladiator and my mum heard only the music she was like, "I thought you were watching Gladiator not Pirates!!"

  • What happens is that composers help out with little melodies while (usually) they have a team that does the rest. The more intricate things like the bigger parts of the orchestration and filling in with other instruments. However, it is still the composer that does the MAJOR composing.

  • correction the Pirates of Carribean music sounds like Gladiator's music. Gladiator came out way b4 Pirates did

  • Klaus Badelt worked with Hans Zimmer to write Gladiator; the actual POTC/Gladiator theme that this video is about was written by Klaus for Gladiator. He then used it as the theme for POTC because, as we can all agree, it is so cool.

So Klaus copied himself - Hans Zimmer didn't steal anything

I for one am glad that he copied it, because I think it works better for pirates anyways

  • @acdaced Wrong. Hans Zimmer copied it from himself.

  • Similarities, of course, but I personally prefer the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack.

  • Bruckheimer had finished shooting POTC1, but was unhappy with the music by Alan Silvestri and wanted a replacement score. Bruckheimer wanted Zimmer to rescore the film, but due to his commitments on The Last Samurai, the task of composing and supervising music for it was given to Klaus Badelt, one of Zimmer's colleagues. Zimmer provided some themes that were used in the film, although he is not credited on screen.

No controversy, just a helping hand. Both are epic soundtrack though (:

  • @xheathersmith A ha! So it's Bruckheimer's fault! Hans Zimmer just isn't known for being that lazy.

  • I have always agreed that these themes are nearly identical. I also like the Pirates version more just because obviously the composer had more time to flesh it out and make it sound even better.

  • not surprising, as hans zimmer worked on teh potc soundtrack...

  • Yeah so true... they both still sound really good but prefer the Gladiators one

  • i watched the movie lastnight and i was like hmmm this sounds likes pirates of the carribean... and i bet its on youtube... sure enoguh it is!

  • You have to be deaf to think these songs are the same. Sure there is a sort of similarity but if you have a musical ear you can definetly hear the difference.

  • @Twycross You don't need a musical ear to hear the difference. The fact that the two themes have differences is quite obvious. I think you need a musical ear to notice that they're really quite similar...the chord progressions and rhythms are almost identical

  • @ravdawg3

No one is denying they are similar but I just enjoy both for what they are.

  • They're stylistically similar, but what do you expect? Badelt works for Zimmer.

  • One R, two Bs in Caribbean...

  • i dont get it...

  • The dodoart8 dude mispelled the word "Caribbean" in the video title.

  • has anyone played Killzone 2 and noticed how similar it's music is to a star wars track?

  • The POTC soundtracks were produced by Hans Zimmer. Badelt works for Zimmer's studio. That quite explains it, I think.

  • @akabakabakab Worked* He discovered Badelt. Badelt then went on his own. Pirates was sorta a 'on his own thing' but Hans still was a part of it. As can be seen because he composed for POTC2

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed it.

The funny part is that Hans Zimmer ended up composing the 2nd one and 3rd one too... hmmmm

  • How about Star Wars and Superman.. :) they're a bit alike. Don't get me wrong I love Williams... Zimmer and Badelt too. Btw, Badelt's name can be found also from the Gladiator soundtrack's composers list. And Zimmer from PotC.

  • Hans Zimmer wrote the scores to both movies.

But that still doesn't explain why they are the same. John Williams did the soundtracks for Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter (to name a few) and they aren't all nearly identical.

  • has somebody mentioned thad according to IMDB, both Zimmer AND Badelt worked on Gladiator music? ;-)

  • Nope...and no one mentioned that they had only 4 days to compose music for POTC 1 and that at least seven other composers helped them with it.

By the way I like the Pirates version better.

  • But hans zimmer composed the last two movies...

  • pffff. say please!

  • what the hell is the name of the soundtrack for the gladiator one. i can't find it anywhere except here and i want the full version withouth POTC coming in

  • It's the Barbarian Horde and it comes in around 5:30

  • Heh heh I was just listening to the Gladiator soundtrack and realised it sounded really similar to the PotC music - thank God I'm not the only one who saw it!

I adore the music to both :-)

  • Gladiator came before pirates but still i love them both!

  • i knew they sounded similar...im watching gladiator right now and it reminded me of pirate music, but only because of the movie...

  • I think the reason Media Ventures recycled the music is because originally Alan Silvestri was gonna compose Pirates of the Caribbean. Klaus Badelt, Hans Zimmer and I believe thirteen other composers had to make this in a ridiculously short period of time.

  • I'd be pretty pissed if I employed them to knock up some tunes for my kickass movie and they used the same one from last time just changes a couple of bits... It is like asking for a painting to be done for you and finding out that they traced someone elses. I'd want a refund... I love the tune though... both of them;-)

  • ya gladiator was before pirates wen i watched it i was like wtf

  • absolutely agree...when I saw Pirates of the Caribean I thought that The battle theme was stolen...but anyway, it´s suitting with the movie

  • Both movies are HansZ+KlausB....

  • I fucking LOVE Gladiator

  • wierd isnt it..

  • i just realized that recently.

  • hans and klaus worked on both soundtracks. coz one got their name on the best song for gladiator, i guess they switched on PotC

  • That's not ironic at all, you twit.

  • ye, Gladiator FTW! i like both movies, but the gladiator was still 100 times bether than pirates of the carribean, the movie was bether, the music was bether, and i just love the gladiator. =)

  • I have both soundtracks, and it's amazing to compare the similarities! I think I like Gladiator best, though.

  • haha. Zimmer is lazy

  • Exactly. No one stole shit. He just recycled his ideas. : )

Or it could be his way of proving that, even though the Curse of the Black Pearl ST is credited to Klaus Badelt, he did his part.

  • hah, I noticed this last time I saw the gladiator, I was like "wth!? pirates of the carribean stole their main theme?" The Gladiator and Hans Zimmer ftw <3

  • nah, I can notice some similarities, but I wouldn't call it "stolen"

  • i would, parts of the Gladiator - The Battle is like the same xP

BTW i think Gladiator is best ennyway :P

  • Hans Zimmer and Klaus badelt have both worked on Gladiatior and Pirates...

  • Didn't Gladiator come out FIRST, anyways?

    o.O;

  • wait a minute, didnt hans zimmer compose music for POTC too?

  • wow... it was like he said transpose this up a bit, and i'll be on vacation!

    ahahahahah

  • Are you deaf!!!!

  • what's stolen?
