The hard work is very much present, in asserting control over your own thoughts("thinking of not thinking" is not meditation) .And I believe he meant that the state described as enlightenment arises from an adaptive rewiring of the brain after it's comfortable with absolutely not using any lens (conscious thoughts) through which to filter reality.

That's actually really helpful to me. Thanks. After all, if we felt ourselves to be entirely whole and complete, we would not be searching for anything. We would simply be and would be happy with our wholeness and knowing of our selves. These statements used to come off as ignorant to me but it seems the universe is just a fan of irony. He's not saying reject your desires. He's saying don't attach your IDENTITY to the fulfillment of those desires. Sure we encounter obstacles in life (like getting the job or mate you want), but there are no "obstacles" to your beingness. Who you are transcends your desires, circumstances, experiences, personality, identity markers (age, name, occupation, race, gender etc.). It's okay to HAVE those identities / goals / experiences, but we tend to fall for the illusion that we ARE those things.
