You're an idiot, risking you life like that. You could have ended up dead or paralized for the rest of you life. And for what? For some fun? You need to grow up and get real, man.
Thanks for sharing your experience and what you learnt. However, your conclusions are faulty and you should consider re-examining them. Equipment like helmets and avalanche balloons provide some protection from injury, but for some people (typically young males) additional protection changes behaviour (i.e. you take more risks). If you want to enjoy skiing as a life-long sport, don't be a trigger and don't get avalanched; instead of relying upon equipment get some quality training. Good luck
Very impressive movie! I think the "small" avalanches you had before were actually quite big ;) I've been skiing powder in Engelberg (Laub, Jochpass) when the avalanche danger was set on "gross" (high). I might be a bit more careful next time! Thanks for sharing and I hope you had a successful recovery.
@thomasiasus Thanks for the info. I happend to be working as a guide and ski instructor in St. Anton am Arlberg and done that for the last 11 years, also teaching skiers/boarders about the topics off minimizing risks in the backcountry terrain.
Wow. Nice edit. Thanks for sharing. I have a video of a avy that I trigger by walking to close to a cornice. I was trying to get a view of my line and I just got way to close to the edge and the thing popped off just barely missing me.
Shit dude you have been stupid. You are so unbelievably lucky to be alive and walking. Like you stated, you were totally ignorant of just about all safety issues.
But then, I'm happy you have learned. Even more, I'm grateful you made this video. There are some excellent takeaways for beginners. Thank you.
"The bottom though. If an avalanche happens, mistakes has been made. You blew it and now you're just doing map out work. You're trying to take a situation, which is really bad, that you created. And now you're going to try make it better, ...as best you can."

great tips but in the video I see two skiiers riding the same line at the same time...thats a realy nice way of triggering an avi chasing the skier below.
Very good video. Thank you for taking the time to edit it to share your complete experience. Live life to the fullest and enjoy skiing in beautiful places.
Thanks for sharing this video with us and let’s hope that we can get more people to acknowledge and understand the risk of off-piste skiing and why it is so crucial to have an ABS backpack.

Where was this? I know that it was in Engelberg and probably close to the Joch pass, but can you show the location in google maps? GPS coordinates?

@JonasLLarsson @JonasLLarsson
Looks like to the West from the top of Jochstock, below Reissend Nollen and toward Engstlenalp. Roughly here:
Lat. 46.769880
Lon. 8.382611

@kierrevihkoA4 Hey Jonas, this is quite where it was. If I measure it, I get those coordinates: 8.37879 / 46.7691. Best, thomas

Thanks for sharing, dude. That's a succinct and unemotional account of the accident, it's very helpful to others.

I feel like these ABS backpacks should be as required for backcountry skiing as beacon, shovel and probe.

Wow, freaky stuff for sure! Just came across this on tgr, pretty convincing for the avalanche backpack. When did this happen?
Hope you fully recover, and maybe we'll meet again next year!
