I could imagine a woman who was so obsessed trying to persuade the wife that something was going on, trying to ruin the man's marriage, perhaps even his career, but not kill herself. I could even imagine her trying to frame the man for shooting her, setting up the gun to just wound, after which all the planted evidence would point to his having shot her, which would have been a better plot, I think.
