I used to avoid shooting RAW because I wanted to keep the ability to just click and open a JPEG anytime I wanted without opening a large program... but this video may have just convinced me.
Looks like I got some work to do tomorrow. I'll post the photos on Flickr and send the links to you. Is Photomatix free? if not, I'll use photoshop which I don't believe has nearly the same amount of control.
@0ldSandwich you can download a program called jpeg from raw - it extracts the jpeg out from your raw files. I use it so I can go through the jpegs then open the raw files i like.
How would you reccomend someone does HDR on a model as keeping both the camera and the model steady might not be very easy. Can I just shoot in RAW then knock the image down some exposure steps in post processing before I HDR?
@machineman9 hdr is for high dynamic range. you surly wouldnt need that on a small area like a models face. maybe for the background. but not the model. I did that in my ghost image of jenna once. but if the models face is within the dynamic range of the camera then you are just messing up her face.
This video was very informative, especially for someone just discovering HDR photography like myself. A blog entry on the subject covers basic techniques and also some of the best HDR photographers out there today like Trey Ratcliff and Terry Reinert. If you're interested in reading it try searching HDR Photography Mass Appeal on google!
Dom, Just checkin to see if I am right - When you do the bracketing is it just the shutter speed that is changing or does it change other settings as well because there is nothing on the D60 that I can find which resembles BKT? So just wondering if it is still possible to do this without that mode.
I use photomatix 3 to make hdr's too, but whenever i load raw files to ceate a hdr, all the colours come out pink, do you have any idea what could be causing this? the camera is a canon 450D. thanks for any clues :)
pink? you may have spazed up the temprature in the editing part but otherwise i would just try and reload the images or teh software. not had that issue before so cant really explain, send an email to photomatix website see if they have any ideas
I don't think it's that, I never touch the settings, and the raw files look fine in lightroom, its only when I generate the HDR in photomatix they go pink, it's like it adds a pink filter over the picture. I can generate them fine from any other kind of file, just not RAW's.
Ill have a serch around on Google and see if anyone else has had this problem and if not, I guess I'll have to shoot of an email to the photomatix guys.
thanks, very helpful. when you make all the changes in photomatix, does the photomatix program save those changes or will it reset when you come back for another hdr?
Look fam...I make awesome short films but don't have the views to prove it. Please show some love....subscribe and rate my videos as you see fit. I think they are 5's. Thanks!!! I always return the favor!

@0ldSandwich you can use a trial of photomatix which leaves a logo on the imagesbut it is still better than photoshops version of hdr work

Do you think it would be worth paying more for the Pro version, or is the Light version fine?
