I have owned both brands, and being ex defence force, have driven land rover in some reasonably extreme conditions. Both have there own strengths & weaknesses. As standard vehicles with no mods I think the defender has the advantage offroad. However the standard no mods jeep is slightly better equiped for comfort. Money where my mouth is, I would get another defender tomorrow given the oportunity. But there is always the 70 series landcruiser to consider too. LOL.

Land Rover's are not unreliable. They are less reliable than a Land Cruiser, but definately not unrelaible. And If West Africa is anything to go by- If a Defender goes wrong, you can fix it, anywhere you are, you can fix it. If a Land Cruiser goes wrong, you abandon it. So if you're in the middle of nowhere, personally I'd rather go in the Landy. I guess it's the ultimate showdown of electronical vs mechanical
