My son of (now four than 2) has been watching this a few times with his mouth open ,amazed! calm, he loves it. He is normally a hurricane! so not only a beautiful song but also a medicine haha love thesong and video
Yes were decades ahead of time, ahead of music, and really offered up the first examples of new age music. They were my favorite band in the 70's and they still are today. Simply amazing artistry.
I saw this concert in 1975 in Austin . . . 6th row. I still have the record. If you listen to all of it, you understand the discordance & war & aftermath. I'll always love Jon Anderson . . . voice of angels.
What a beautiful song almost brings tears.I just saw Jon and Rick Wakeman live in Buffalo NY october 26/2011.( yesterday).I teared up during this song. With Rick on keyboards it sounded almost exact to this video. Dont go see fake YES.They threw Jon him out of the band. Go see Jon and Rick if you have a chance. It was a glorious evening.
Obrigada YES!!!

Funny Steve Howe takes an instrument that you think of George Jones or Waylen Jennings and turns it into a progressive rock masterpiece.Yes is the best of the best. Some prog bands had better vocals like early Genesis but none could match the cleverness of Yes's music.
@FlixMaker64 I was not knocking Jon Anderson.I love his voice but some of my friends who were not into Yes as much as I cited his high end vocals as a reason for dislike.I do think Peter G was the best prog vocalist.Yes is my favorite band so you will not find me out of step with that but there where other great prog bands like King Crimson,Early Genesis,ELP,Camel,Vandergraff Generater and many others who where close to Yes in Quality of music and equal vocally.
@FlixMaker64 No human being has ever had a 7 octave range. Only a few have had 4 octaves. Jon has a wonderful, rich, high voice, but he doesn't have a wealth of low notes. He probably has a solid 3 octaves.
Also- I believe this piece to be Anderson's most lyrical work - outside of "Olias". I am a poet and the allusions, the imagery, the layered meanings, the tone, and tempo are gorgeous.
@ TQ2boyz When this "Gates" was released, the US has just exited Viet Nam and there was a lot of anti-war (and, anti-American, it must be stated) sentiment "in the air". Yes, I'm sure that had something to do with the piece. The reference to Tolstoy is on the liner notes & documented elsewhere. "Soon", I think , has become a sort of "signature" song for Anderson over the years. When he performed "Soon" solo in San Francisco in Dec. (2010) it was as moving as the first time I heard it.
I saw them perform this piece around 1975 in Seattle (probably this tour) - it brought the stadium crowd to its feet - and - everyone in the section I was in to tears. What a joyous thing to find this video - thank you, knightmidnight, for posting!
This is a gorgeous, cosmic song!!!! I remember I went to a medieval fair on acid when I was 17 or 18 and I had made a mix tape to listen to whilst tripping. Ill never forget walking around peaking and this track coming on...I was BLOWN away and touched by this song; it seemed to be perfect for the setting and state of mind. Everything and every person that walked by was perfect and beautiful and fragile. I saw the cosmic parade of life dancing by.
Actually, Pewploid, all of Yes' work is full of Christian imagery, you just need to "tune in" to it. Large chunks of "Topographic", "Awaken". This doesn't mean that Anderson is exclusively Christian, he is polytheistic in his approach ("Olias" owes more to von Daniken than anyone else!!).
@notimeleftforyou I was at the same show! Got my tickets at the Ticket-tron at Silver Rods drug store in Journal Square! The last encore was a beatles song if I remember right but I can't remember which....Do you remember?
In case you hadn't noticed, "Soon" is actually an ADVENT HYMN. Anderson simply replaced "Son" with "Sun" so as not to annoy the non-Christians. Christ coming to fulfil the prophecies is reflected in the line "Long ago/set into rhyme" as in, prophesied in the Bible. The rest of the song thereafter is astonishingly clear once this is pointed out. Yes, and I think it will probably be on the CD list at my funeral too!
@TQ2boyz Anderson does explain this song on his site-- it's also on the liner notes of the re-master CD of "Relayer". I've heard choirs try to sing "Soon" for various holidays (it looses something...). Anderson means the sun when he says sun. To summarize & paraphrase: "Gates of Delirium" is based on War and Peace, Soon is a hopeful prayer of returning peace.
I think that blaming "Gates" on "War and Peace" is a little simplistic. I am sure that Jon had both Vietnam and Korea on his mind when penning it, as well as our continued penchant for nuclear annihilation. Jon has always offered an upside to our "low brain" leanings, as evinced in both "So Long Ago, So Clear" in Vangelis' "Heaven and Hell" (so long ago? What biblically COULD he have meant?) and the finale "Loved by the Sun (Son again?) from Ridley Scott's "Legend". Gosh, deep or what??
eddieBsbB i am almost sure it is from an Old Grey Whistle Test special that was shown in may 1975, and was live from the (Q.P.R) Loftus Road football stadium, hope that may be some help to you.
@welsh1kev : thanks for the info...I was into Yes long before I got On The Bus...my very first rock concert was Yes in 1976 (Richfield Coliseum)...at the age of 16...the ticket price was just $6.60 US with no service fees...
@EddieBsB I'm 54 and this music is as fresh as the day i remember hearing it for the first time, your first time of listening has just taken a little longer, music and peace are timeless
Hasta los 80 todo,a partir de los 80 nada...Gracias a esta generación de los que ya tenemos entre 50-60,un patrimonio de la humanidad, orgullo de nuestra generación y envidia del resto...
They could be a band straight out of middle earth, I could see the elves singing this in one of their big halls during a merry feast. That's it the guys from Yes are elves!
Wonderful music,.the voice of Jon takes us to the stars.I saw them in 1977 in Lyon and in 1991 in Grenoble for the Union Tour. What a magic they a able to do when they are on stage.Yes rules the world definitively.
You can tell how great YES and their music is just by studying the video. The crowd of thousands is completely silent during the song due to total awe and enrapturement (no, this is not a religious term). Yet at the end of the song the crowd erupts into unanimous rejoicing. That is the true sign of classical music.
(cont'd): I was so startled and he put me immediately at ease, talked about how they had requests from the venue to turn down the intensity of the strobes during Sound Chaser etc.... Jon was pretty high, obviously enjoying himself - I told him I was at the infamous Tull/Yes concert at Hampton Beach back in the day and we shared a laugh about it. My girlfriend at the time got back to her home in MA about three hours past her curfew, got grounded for a week - said it was well worth it.
STILL remember this tour and how great it was. Saw the shows in Boston, Hartford and Providence. Walked out of the restroom in the hotel lobby where the band was staying in Providence and smack into Jon -

Simply excessively… It makes me to remember the best moments of my life… My youth… that one I was happy excessively and today I review and relembro with much affection what it passed. Now permance forever in mine lembraça…
I saw this performed in, well in 75 first but in 97 at Fox Theater in Royal Oak Mi, It was a true Yes crowd. Right up to the end of this song with the steel guitar trailing off the entire place was SILENT, not even murmuring. Everyone was entranced, on the edge of their seats. The song ended and 3 to 5 seconds went by, still dead silence. A slow building clap and cheers ensued. It was magical!
@ZacharyJamesMartin I'm just curious Zach, your age and your music style. While I can agree Jon's voice was not in peak shape here and the steel guitar was a bit shrill....This is one of the top 10 bands of the last century without a doubt their musician ship and skill exceeds most of the supergoups. If you are a musician you should recognize this, unless of course you are judging them on this performance only. Close to the Edge will be played at my funeral! In 70's I was a stoner not a hippie!
Jon has a most distinct voice as does the music of YES and they have a universal appeal too. Play on loud speakers above the Earth make everyone stand, stop and listen to what might sound like the heavens, bring on world peace. Nice dream I guess.

I saw YES in 1976 Tampa Stadium and they did this song after the Jam part ot Gates of Delirium with the most incredible lasers and stage I had seen. I was up front and looking around even the cops, everyone was just blown away how beautiful this song was!!! I will never forget it, its my favorite song by YES to this day because of that..
Yes are the best, and Jon's voice defines them..lord knows what Benoit "the cardboard canadian usurper " David will do to them. one things for certain, he will not be able to sing Soon or Turn of the Century as good as this.
hey please tell me ...hey you guys where did you get this...Did you break through the mind of God?....Can this planet produces this treasure?

fuxing hippies!!

It was magical!

omfg worst song ever this is shit why dont u fuxing hippies listen to some real music ughghghhg its like ear rape!!!!
ZacharyJamesMartin 11 months ago
@ZacharyJamesMartin I'm just curious Zach, your age and your music style. While I can agree Jon's voice was not in peak shape here and the steel guitar was a bit shrill....This is one of the top 10 bands of the last century without a doubt their musician ship and skill exceeds most of the supergoups. If you are a musician you should recognize this, unless of course you are judging them on this performance only. Close to the Edge will be played at my funeral! In 70's I was a stoner not a hippie!
muzicosm 10 months ago
@muzicosm you stole my thunder. I just saw the current version of yes do this song a couple days ago
and told my wife I wanted this played at my funeral. It already takes me to other places. Incredible lyrics and playing.

@fanslerw Well when I listen to The Gates Of Delirium, I don't need LSD. The music is LSD for me. It bring me to an other world...

Wow, I'm now 49, and I saw Yes long ago in the round, but their lyrics are so relevant, they're becoming my new religion!

Yes are the best, and Jon's voice defines them..lord knows what Benoit "the cardboard canadian usurper " David will do to them. one things for certain, he will not be able to sing Soon or Turn of the Century as good as this.
Vevey2004 1 year ago
@Vevey2004 Believe it or not, Benoit does a decent job, but Jon is Lord (no not Deep Purple's keyboardist).
