  • Wow, never saw this before...it does, in fact, suck. I love how at the end after she finishes dry-humping her veil and rolling around on the floor, the music stops, and then she just gets up and walks off to tepid applause.

  • I saw an argument comparing cyndi Lauper to Madonna. Yeahhh cyndi Lauper is way better

  • her voice is TERRIBLE.

  • In MTV Brazil this performance is first in TOP 7 most controversials times on VMA.

  • OMG i love you sooo much Madonna!

  • she's high as a MOFO

  • Don't roll around too much Madonna. They might see your giant balls. lmao XD Ohhhh! How I <3 Madonna so much! Truly an incredible performer and artist :)

  • Sean Penn was one lucky bastard back then.

  • this is hilarious. she's so balller for doing this.

  • Madonna is GOD! NO ONE will ever compare to this fearless ICON with the balls of steel.

  • that's awesome, notice how there wasn't a lot of clapping after the performance, people weren't sure what to make of it, and she sang live! brilliant.

  • Im 15, a third-generation Madge Fan;) I find it so funny that people in the 80's found this so controversial. Now we sing about bondage and wear meat dresses! Its so amazing to think that this song/video/performance started it all! I love you Madonna!! And @mrchiki23, this song/video/performance is great in ANY day's standards!

  • @HitchcockGaGa Madonna and Lady Gaga. You have great taste when it comes to females in pop music. Good for you.

  • lol... was she drunk or somethin'?

  • I remember this song coming out and my father was like.. omg what's THIS??? That's when I decided to become a fan. Loved her in the 80's! :)

  • A legend was born.

  • @Mrepicfail4ever Nice!!!!! The best comment that anyone posted!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • who cares when it was she's still a dumb whore and that gave us britney spears, lady gaga, christina agularia, and a bunch of other sluts that i can't stand, so i can't really say she was a great artist. the fact that she's the best-selling female artist of all time is an embarassment to all women in general - men get the beatles, and elvis. we're represented in music by a stupid whore. fantastic

  • who's the presenter ?

  • @happydays249 The presenter is Dan Aykroyd, of "Saturday Night Live" and "Blues Brothers" fame.

  • she's as old as my mom,, but damn,, I wish I was that wedding dress she gyrates on,, xD

  • Before this performance I didn't even think Madonna was all that hot. The Lucky Star look was what I most associated her with, and that wasn't working for me then. After this performance, everyone went nuts. It was all anyone was talking about the next day in middle school, kind of like Michael Jackson's moonwalk at the Motown show a year or two earlier or Elvis on Ed Sullivan back in the late 50's, I suppose. A month later every girl in school was wearing lace and gummy bracelets every day.

  • see, this performance is the very reason why gaga can never be the 'new madonna' or whatever justification people try to give to her constant madonna impersonations.... the fact is that madonna changed things, she shook the industry up and everyone else FOLLOWED IN HER FOOTSTEPS gaga didnt invent shit, she just recycles ideas from 30 years ago, people are trying to say 'gaga does it better' 'gaga is a better singer' blah blah blah, gaga would not exist it madonna didnt...end of discussion....

  • The Start Of Her Reign The Queen had Arrived!

  • this fucking rulz!

  • This woman just oozes sex, go Madonna!

  • Queen of Music and Motion!

  • why is not still that hot? :(

  • @ralothemusic1 What? this is nothing like Cyndi Lauper what the hell are you talking about? I love Cyndi and this is nothing like her. Weird...Her music and persona everything is different, the only similarities are their clothing and it's a proven fact Madonna was dressing this way in downtown NYC before Cyndi came out. They're clothing is similar cuz they both came from the NYC underground fashion trend of the that time (thrifty), Madonna got it from the latinas and blacks, but Maripol mostly.

  • @mrchiki23-I would say predominantly Maripol The bangles, rubber jewelry, crucifixes were all Maripol. But what you state is accurate that this was the thrift store/Mudd Club style associated to people like Anya Phillips and the punk scene. Maripol stated that she was directly influenced by the punk scene. Lauper had a similar style, although it predates both of them.

  • @mrchiki23 thank you! its not often that someone comments on here with their facts correct!

  • This performance is kind of a mess, but still legendary.

  • @guilevitto Gaga looks like Madge intead?

  • great peformance, good looks and vocals. and im glad dis vid post finaly has the intro and closing of peformance!

  • Madonna said her shoe was removed from her foot accidentally and did not know how to properly put it back, so she went down the stage and grind

  • wow back then they didnt have good introductions and appearances and then when u leave the stage

  • CYNDI LAUPER!!!!!

  • Awkward ending--just walking off stage quietly. haha, but good performance!

  • madonna just didn't give a fuck... and that's y she's still on top...

  • whoa lol, love the 80's! to bad i was born in 1994...lol

  • me tooo!

  • the one and only best performance of the vmas history

  • This one and Nirvana's 1992 performance and the Smashing

Pumpkins 1996 performance are the only three legendary ones.

  • hey great vid Krokodyle and loving the pic you have up of billy idol he was sexy and still is

  • lmao 3:14-3:20

  • one of the defining moments of the '80s. can you post tina turner's performance too?

  • funny this is controversial, at first she was just a hot mess. then it was as if she realized she had to do some crazy and started rolling around a little.

  • @ladydementia13 a hot mess? your nuts-

  • Nowhere near as provocative as I thought it would be. Maybe three air humps of a veil and she's in the history books? WTF?

  • i agree with you.

  • Things were different in the 80s. Of course nowadays you can see these kind of things everywhere on the TV and it's just "normal", but at that time it was pretty controversial.

  • shes so pretty here

  • People dissing this performance that weren't old enough in the 80's, this moment is considered one of the 50 moments that changed music history per Rolling Stone magazine and millions of other people around the world. It might not seem great to today's standards, but this paved the way for the Britneys, Christinas, Rihannas, etc. The first VMA show ever and the first glimpse of Madonna to the world. This blew her up and 25+ years later she is the most successful female artist of all time.

  • @mrchiki23 I totally agree! I was born in 1993 but I appreciate 80s music, this was an amazing performance.

  • @mrchiki23 amen!

  • @mrchiki23 I can remember when Madonna did this, heads were exploding all over the place. People were not prepared for someone gyrating and crawling around in a wedding gown with Boy Toy stamped on their belt singing you "make me FEEL shiny and new...like a virgin". Back then you did not even THINK of wearing white unless you WERE a virgin. Madonna was a discussion in schools, churches and even the White House. The "trailblazer" goes through the fire so the future can appreciate more freedom.

  • @mrchiki23 This is the girl that started it all....LOL!!!

  • @mrchiki23 Cher & Stevie Nicks paved the way for madonna.

  • @Skemmdarvargur1 I respect them all but Madonna owes very little to Stevie Nicks who was a singer-songwriter with a guitar playing rock music. The only thing comparable is Stevie had some unique fashion sense, but anyone can see Madonna has been much more to owe David Bowie. Cher never changed trends or used the media like Madonna. While there is some influence from Cher to Madonna, Its very little and Madonna's career went in a completely different direction with a much more lasting impact.

  • @mrchiki23 It's NOT about Music style. I don't know if you recall or aware about women in music back then. But it was very hard for a female artist to break in those times. Even in the 80's. Pat Benatar herself has spoken about the crap she had to do just to put up with just to get her music played on the radio. Cher & Stevie Nicks were the pioneers of women earning the respect of radio and getting worldwide attention and acclain.

  • @Skemmdarvargur1 Yes, it was hard for females, no one can agrue with that, but that is why Madonna changed the guard so to speak. She brought a complete change to the business model and direction for pop stars, especially females. She was the first female to have complete control of her career. Something those you mention did not have (Sonny Bono, Fleetwood Mac). Compare the charts pre-Madonna to post-Madonna. Cher, Stevie, Pat, and Debbie cracked the door open, Madonna blew it off the hinges.

  • @mrchiki23 Before she was famous Madonna learned to play the drums and guitar and when she was a member of The Breakfast Club.she branched out. Cher had no choice about trends in her day............like today, she was all over the tabloids for various reasons. I was a kid then, I remember. Cher was NOT respected back then. Madonna came along at a time when it was perfect for her. She used the media that was available to her benefit and hasn't looked back since.

  • @mrchiki23 You said exactly what I would!

  • @mrchiki23 Plus she didn't lip sych. she had backing tracks, true.............but she still sang live.

  • @mrchiki23 I prefer talent over success.

  • @ATLZero How is it possible to achieve success without talent?

  • i heard she had diaraiha.

  • That was fake.

  • @MartinezPaisa who, your mom?

  • where did u get this from??

i want MTV to play like all the VMAs..like once a day before the 2008 VMAs

  • OMG! I could smell her rotten Fish!!!!! pooo-chi!

  • vmas in that time were dull thakns god madonna was there to save theme unhappily she wasn't ovationated as she sould had been

  • dude did she hump her veil?

  • i think she did

  • la verdadera reina del pop de 1984 y 1985 fue Cyndi lauper!!!!!!!!!!!!

    cyndi queen

  • Y donde esta ahora?

  • She's Hot. Mmmmm !

  • What gives, there's a cut in the middle. She was either drunk or high as a kite. I remember her eyes looked like glass they were so glazed looking. Damn was she sexy though.

  • Her face was so cute when she looked at the camera @ 1:04

  • like a greek goddess

  • i hope that bouquet she chucks smacked tina turner right in the face.

  • youre nothing. you have shit taste and should die at midnight. this is hte best performance in the history of rock and roll.

  • its not even rock and roll...she sang mostlyy that genre, but this particular song was not. and yeah, that performance did suck, it was boring, with no choreography. so shut up.

  • i know how iconic this is, but it is a very crass and unprofessional performance for her part. If I saw this today I'd think she was fucked on cocaine that night. I really respect and love Madonna but I think if I saw this performance in 1984 I'dve not been remotely impressed by her.

  • well she has some good vocals in it, but the dancing was SHIT.

  • @freeek04

No you would have been jaw dropped like the rest of 1984 America. Madonna is the reason that bras are now apprpiate daily wear. My parents taped the 1st VMA for me & told me to leave the room as they FFWD past this part. & I WAS 13!! It only just occured to me that it would be here. & going back to the mindset of the day, Im suprised she wasnt dumped by her label.

  • @Uglimusashi Madonna is a product of clever new marketing strategy, why would her label dump her. I agree with you that in the 80s this was highly controversial and was talked about for weeks in my primary school. I wanted an outfit like that, and I was under 10. It was a more innocent time then, we sang this song at my Catholic school every day but we had no idea that the song was suggestive, we just liked the beat. LOL Happy days

  • that`s show is suck. cyndi lauper show is better, the queen cyndi lauper.

  • cyndi lauper wishes she had an ounce of what madonna has. the only thing she did great was the 1984 ama's where she sang princes' 'when you were mine'.

  • Visually stimulating but her voice wasnt amazing...they had to play the vocal track along the chorus while she was singing live so her voice would sound firmer.

  • that's what they call back up singers on the cheap. now she has real ones like donna delory when she tours. otherwise she sounds great!

  • she has made such a long journey since 1984 !!!!!!
