Analogue synths have no sonic power or versatility. All these analogue devotees cry wheres the knobs, but what do they do? Make the same boring sqelchy acid type sounds over ahd over and over again. The last time I heard anything great come from an analogue synth was Vince clarke in the early 80s.
The bass on a DX7 MK2 will blow a mini moog away. The pads will make a JP8 look like a fools snth at its price. And the vox sounds have an emulator/synclavier quality. The DX7 MK 2 is where its at.
The DX7 is the greatest PURE synth of ALLTIME. And I will tell you why. An analogue couldnt produce a realistic sound like the DX7. But the DX7 could produce fat analogue type sounds. Plus what you hear with the original DX7 is pure unlayered sounds without EFFECTS.
Oh yes what you think are great sounds today are sampled sounds not synthesised at all. That is what makes the DX7 so special thoses iconic sounds came straight out of the FM sound engine and nowhere else.
this does the sonic hedgehog spring yard bells to a t, only just got one recently incorporaated with modern soounds its like a barber cuthroat, cut through like a mo fo , though hard to program the acoustic sounds are second to none hook it up to an outbord fx unit then you are cooking on high octane
The sound at the very begining sounds like the sound in Phil Collins: One More Night, and he did infact use a DX7. What Catridge, and sound did you use?
I can see why the DX7 was so appealing on release. As much as analog sounds great, it can get boring after a while and the digital sounds just cut right through a mix. I think the DX7 is way more versatile than most analogs. I wouldn't be without an analog synth as the fatness and warmth is great but I like the DX7 just as much.
I find it so ridiculous that people knock the DX7. Yes, the presets were mostly cheesy. But if you have the patience to understand FM synthesis, you can achieve amazing sounds. Sure, analog is great (I own 4 analog monosynths) but the two can compliment each other so nicely. However, I will admit that editing would be so much nicer if there were knobs for each function instead of a single slider.
The DX7 gets shit these days for being so "cheesy." Sure, the presets are cheesy, but I think the people who deride it are really just jealous of the people who understand FM synthesis.

Absolutely agree about the layering analog with digital. SUCH a powerful sound. I layer my Yamaha AN1X with my more modern synths all the time. Couldnt ask for anything better.
At around 2:04, that's the preset Babyface fell in love with for about 85% of his ballads like "Superwoman" -Karyn White, "Rock Wit'cha" -Bobby Brown, & "Whip Appeal" -Himself before flooding 90's radio withh "Love Makes Things Happen" -Pebbles, "My My My" Johnny Gill, & "End Of The Road" -Boyz II Men
I bought a used dx7 II several years ago and hardly used it, because it has no builtin fx like other digital keyboards. Meanwhile I fortunately own several analog outboard fx and the dx7 is a vital component of my setup.
the sound at 1:18 sounds JUST like the intro to Queen's Who Wants To Live Forever! They used a DX7 for this, but im not sure what the name of the sound is.. its a kinda synth pad/organ/strings :P
The Prophet is also very nice and will do a whole other style of sounds. Knobs are grreat to have but you can also work with out them :). I also have synths with knobs and others without, for me it has not affected how I play :).
WHat is really coolis to layer an analog sound with a digital...it's all good :)
@Brian880 I have a Sequencial Circuit Prophet six-track (the old analog one) and it works perfectly, but is played differently than the new digital ones. It is hard to find someone who still plays old analog synths the way they should be played. I would never trade the beauty of configuring sounds on my prophet for a digital synth.
this is really interesting to hear the sounds you made in the 80's. some of the sounds are so accurate sounding... excellent job. i have a dx7 myself an i use it with MOTU's Unisyn. Haven't really replicated any instruments with it though.
when I first heard the DX7 in 1984 I knew every Pop and R&B from then on would use it. I was right. Since this synth is next to impossible to program all the major acts used the same presets. You can be up all night trying to program this thing
with a lot of time and patience! I experiment by altering the algorithm and frequency ratio settings for each operator on presets I already like, to see if I accidentally come across something I like. I've been playing the things for years and still don't REALLY know the programming process very well.
I had a DX7 once, and it had a famous patch called fulltines in it (very similar to the first sound here but snappier) and I sent it the Jolly Roger Bay/Dire Dire Docks theme you mentioned via midi and it was pretty cool. :) When I get a DX7 again I'll make a vid.
No they're not! There's loads of them on eBay all the time. There were like a bajillion units produced, plus all the rack gear in the same family. Then there's the SY77/99...
I saved like a bastard to buy one of these in 1986, when I had enough the salesman convinced me the newly arrived Korg DW8000 was better so I had one of them instead.
one day all machines will made this way. wicked stuff. built like a tank and made to last. unlike our new plastic junk of today. great noises...brian.

this synth is a true headache to program. This is why nobody ever bothered programming it.
Listen to all the records it was used on..they all have one thing in common--they all used only FACTORY sounds.
