My husband and I just watched this film (I purchased it on Amazon). It was amazing. Well done Mr. Bowdon! You did an excellent job of inditing the American education system without pointing the finger at teachers. I hope your message gets through.
1950-private Catholic school: Sister Ann grabbed him by the ear, took him to the sink and washed his mouth out with soap. He never cursed in school again. Neither did any of his classmates.
2011-public school: A panel of experts deliberated for hours on strategies on how to help Billy's teacher with her classroom management. The team decides that the TEACHER needs more professional development!
Going beyond unions - The Public Educational system has more cases of pedophilia and child molestation than the Catholic Church in both absolute numbers and per capita. Reason magazine also has some good videos on this topic up here on youtube.
I live in a neighborhood with teachers, one on either side, across the street and down the block. I shared this video clip with each of them, and without exception, each of them said that this video was 100% dead-on. They said, and I quote: "If you are not part of the union, then you will go nowhere, you will be blackballed, and you will not last long in the teaching profession." unquote. They each stated being a teacher in the public school system, as being in the mafia. All plan to leave soon.
Look at the mess that the teachers' unions have created. They have ripped the taxpayers' pockets while failing our children! Governor Christie is finally taking on the NJEA and calling them out for the mess they have created! This is a massive kickback scheme to support the state's Democratic machine. The NJEA has monopolized public education at the children's expense!
no doubt urban schools w/ help of unions have been screwing kids over for generations. it needs to stop. school choice will be biggest boon for improvement for ALL schools. unfortunately, however, much of the charter mvmt, led by NLNS & BES & KIPP, etc. says that ALL kids can go to college & graduate, and the only reason they don't is b/c of the adults. the problem w/ this = setting kids up for failure if they don't go to/graduate from college. too much rah rah. BES/NLNS, more reality, please.
I grew up in the Newark school system and can verify what they say is true. I've seen it as a child and in fighting the system when I had my children. One of the best things I remember about one teacher in growing up was when he had the courage to keep me back in the 7th grade when no other teacher would do that. That was my wakeup call. Mr. Charles Motley, I thank you for doing that.
No one can really say anything about this type of school system until they've experienced it.
It's always never anyone's fault except of course anyone who dares to question the money involved and then you are hurting the kids. It doesn't matter how many are being hurt right now and some how if they don't each have an ipod touch or a laptop they are being hurt? Some of them can't even read or write a coherent sentence!
Why do they always show Black children with tear jerker music. The banging on the drum is pretty telling - look at them noble savages - they are stupid but they sure are happy! HOW COME THIS WASN'T A PROBLEM BEFORE DESEGREGATION?
@Wormtail81 - all of them? Nonsense. But even if it was true, the tax payers have been soaked for this "integration." Have Blacks risen to the occasion? Or have they just dragged everyone down to their level?
@ScottfromTexas How can you stereotype an entire group of people as if they were all the same? One of my best friends is from Ghana, and she is that smartest person I know, and I went to an Academic High School with 12 national merit semifinalists.
Beyond that primitive stereotype, just look at how dysfunctional and politicized the system is. You cannot blame those kids. Their parents, sure, but the system has to change as well.

What about the superintendents that make +$200,000? No public servant should make this kind of money.

Thank you, finally, someone says it out loud.
How can 400 administrators in Newark be making over $100K?! That is revolting.

I can honestly say the only evil I ever met, institutionalized and unforgivable, was the school system.

@ScottfromTexas Before desegregation black kids' schools had dirt floors. I am from South Carolina---trust me on this.
