  • a great lesson. Love that intro from razorlight. beautiful use of delay and chorus. the picking pattern can be deduced by ear. thanks so much brutha.

  • I'm pretty good at "Pointless" :-) Sorry it wasn't much help for you.

  • You dont show picking patterns, which kinda makes the video a little pointless, since that is the major part of the lesson and song

  • Hi I was in the gym tonight and saw you in that gameshow Pointless on BBC1, I knew I had seen you before somewhere and then remembered this video :0)

  • Mustard! Cheers fella!

  • @gibbotron Thanks for your nice condiment... I mean compliment. :-)

  • i had no idea what you were playing at times you just said 'that one'... what one! no everyone can interpret music that well just a pointer for next time :)

  • You inspire me to play guitar ive barely learned any so far though. I have posted both songs i know :)

  • i enjoy that video but there is a little thing that i can´t enjoy. im not able to see your guitar strings, so it were a little bit easier to learn if i were able to see them;)

  • fuck i thought this video was called "how to play AMERICANA"

  • I have always wanted to learn this nice riff, and realised its not actually that hard! thanks!

  • Thanks mate, really helpful, clean and easy to learn from. 5/5!

  • perfectly explained thanx dude i got it

    :)

  • Good lesson, but next time - play the WHOLE THING you want to learn someone, before learning it. Makes the whole lesson mushc easier to follow and know "where you are"..

  • 2:44 his face :L

  • Good lesson would you tell me the effect you are using in the vid.? is it a delay or echo or something?

  • Good lesson mate but tabs or strings explained would help for us beginners.

  • Comment removed

  • really good lesson

    thanks :)

  • He clearly shows which frets to use, it's not that hard to write down your own tab.

  • tabs?

  • i dont know what strings hes pickin in part 3

  • Can someone tell me in tabs or something what he is doing at 3:47 - 4:09

    Cheers

  • class

  • Cool T-Shirt

  • one of my fav bands ^^

  • please can someone tell me what strings hes pickin is it just the ones his fingers are on for the chords or is he playin open strings aswell? if your readin this please can you write down the numbers in the info bit for each chord if its not too much hassle?

  • first c the piking is:a,d,g,d. . . . second c a,d,b,d......then the g type chord is:a,g,g,a,a.......then repete the others i havent watched the whole vid yet

  • thanks for posting.

This song is gonna be around for a very, very long time. It perhaps the only topical song in the mainstream that says so much, without overtly saying anything polarizing. Also, the song is in PAST TENSE, which in itself is very revealing of Razorlights world view.

  • awesome tuition im a beginner and ii lv ur style of music all my fav tunes monkey see are awesome as well could u please please please post up a video of how to play sway - the kooks its really amazing it would mean alot thnx andy from rik

  • great teacher....

  • which strings do i pluck???

  • pretty obvious. the ones where ur fingers are on! hehe

  • It;s a G-string not a D!

  • huge thanks for your help

but i'm french and you speak vey well english !!!

  • thanks alot, your lesson really helped.

i really think you should do a lesson on young leaves, by a canadian indie band called attack in black. at leats listen to the song and thing about itplease:D

  • monkey see monkey do.

  • good lesson...

  • I have been watching may of your videos your a really good guitarist and a amazing teacher. Will you teach us something Aerosmith like please theres no good videos showing anything aerosmith

  • Hey cheers, u r a gd teacher. do u hv the tabs?

  • cheers fella, so much easier when you see someone know what their doing play it slow ;)

  • Thks lad. Vry good teacher ! you go slowly when it's difficult, it's very nice :)

  • thanks m8!

  • thank you very much :)

    i really love this song

  • when he starts saying about the "d" string that rings thorughout the riff, I'm sure that he means the g string, am I getting confused?

  • Yep, that's right, I was having a funny 5 minutes that day and I should have said G string not D string. Also I refer to an A chord whic is actually a G. My apologies for confusing everyone.

  • @andybltt Having said that you were still correct because the note of the string with the capo on that fret actually brang it up to a D, thats why I thought you said it haha

  • it's good, but i get a bit confused in the second part of the riff. Well done, thanks for the video though!

  • thx alot very good lesson 5*

  • you are very quicklyy!!hehe good vid

  • Very good, Im your fan now! Do a guitar lesson of the 'In the Morning' by Razorlights. Rock on!

  • I've been wanting to learn this for ages

Mr Andy you are a legend

  • awsome!!!!!

  • this is honstly the best guitar lesson i have ever seen

    ice

    no made over complecated

    thank you very much

  • Thanks a lot! I hope you do more vids man! Keep it up!

  • brilliant stuff again

  • class video as well mate gonna subsribe

  • and its a brilliant riff cant wait for razorlights 3rd album

  • lost my capo lol

  • can you tell me the sturming pattern

  • my best m8s nickname is capo i started it off his second name is capless

  • Great video, nice and clear instructions. I dropped learnin Purple Haze in favour of this cos it sounds so good but when i get this one Jimi i'm coming back to you. Cheers

  • it's the open d between the c shape to g shape change which you don't mention but an important part in bridging the shift in fingering

  • I'm struggling to follow bits of this vid... at one point you say 3rd finger, d string, 9th fret but the note you play is is g string 9th fret. you weren't very clear about the note played directly after the hammer on. A once through at half speed is always a good thing to add.

  • awesome video but what is the struming pattern? its so hard to learn it without it.

  • Great mate, but why don't you write a tablature for that intro :) ?

  • huh after the pull offs what do you play?

  • Excellent video mate, my guitar playing has just gone up a notch, keep the videos coming, I shall be looking out for your work!

  • Hi, just curious here Andy. Love the video. Thanks very much !! But in Part 1 of the intro riff, my ear is telling me that the in the third chord, the "G" string us used as opposed to "D" string as you instruct. Perhaps just my ear, but wondering. Thanks again for your great video !!

  • Hi and thanks for your question. I got the sound by using a little delay and the neck pickup on the guitar to keep it sounding warm. I have my setting fairly flat on the amp (i.e. bass, mid and treble at about 5). Hope this helps.

  • Mean't to ask .....what chords are used with the capo on the seventh fret in the verse and chorus...thanks :)

  • Hiya, sorry its taken a while to reply, but with the capo on 7th fret, use the chord shapes for Amin, Dmin, G, C (I think, from memory). Hope this helps. :-)

  • (p.s. those are the chorous chords. The verse chords are very similar to the intro)

  • many thanks for that.....can't say its perfect yet but its vaguely recognisable....give me a couple of months maybe <g> .... again, thankyou :)

  • your a good guitar player veryy good teacher too

  • is that a les paul??? frickin gorgeous

  • excellent lesson,i learn everything about guitar on youtube,i should master the intro no problem, can you pick up from their and show the rest of chords for verse and chorus.Cheers

  • excellent, very good video. thanks.

  • you're awesome :)

  • merci ! Thanks ! Danke ! XD

  • this is fantastic I'd lost it nowit's bookmarked - excellent lessonTHANKYOU

  • excellent video although i lost respect when i saw feeder on your shirt lol

  • yay i can play it now!

  • merci c'est cool

  • O thanks!

Great lesson, You tought me this song in 30 minutes :) :) :)

  • nice sound dude

  • Nice attention to detail and great sound too. I've never really liked using a capo, just a pet hate of mine. I just usually bar with my first finger. Let me know what you think of my band's attempt. Maybe next time my riff will be a bit more accurate now that I've seen this. Tho when you're playing to a drunk crowd they don't seem to pick up on that, LOL. Good stuff!

  • it's hard not to use a capo in this one

  • Thanks alot man, really appreciate you taking the time and effort to make this, I got it nailed perfect now, ty! =)

  • Glad to have been of service. :-)

  • Andy 1 one to learn how to play a guitar after seeing and hearing you play can i learn purely from posts like this on you tube or do i ned a teacher? before i go out and splash on a guitar

  • thank you!

  • wow thank you. do you know how much capo's are generally sorry its a bit of a stupid question!

  • Anything from £5 to £15 depending on the type.

  • great thanks!!

  • Hey man, thanks for the lessons... i cant find anyone else on youtube teaching the kooks! No chance you'd do some acoustic kooks songs/ seaside, ohh la, or naive?! Keep up the good work!

  • you have taught me alot cheers

  • mate you are an absolute geezer, thanks so much for putting this on, people like me make the world worth living in, sharing like this is so wondeful, please never stop, u are a star

  • nice, thanks a bunch.

  • just the intro please

  • could you do the same for dakota by sterophonics please

  • Hi Jay. Which bit of Dakota do you want? There is a lot of keys in it so I tend to pick out the melody and a few bits in the chorous. Let me know what you need and I'll see what I can do.

  • could u do the same thing for dakota

  • nicee

  • great mate!!lovely lesson.loved it. Fat thanx from Brazil man!

  • thanks for the help i´m from german and this is the best song i´ve ever heard ;-)

  • Great lesson you rule youtube my friend

  • Nice one for posting this - it's nice to know that there are music lovers out there that want to help others play their faves without ripping them off - your a one off man! Peace!

  • No problem. It was fun for me to post this so if there are any other tunes out there that people need some help with, I'm always happy to post more (if I can play it of course :-).

  • thnx alot! was realli stuck on findin proper tabs for this song! we'l b playin this 1 in the pub soon thnx to u! :p

  • nice one pal your a great man for helping me learn that, keep up the good work with monkey see

  • This helped me alot!! Thanks

  • Goodman Andy, this was a real help, thanks!

  • A C position with capo 7th is actually G chord, not an A, to get an A you would play a D shape.

Nothing personal, just me being a pedantic little tit.

  • You're spot on and I did actually point this out in my full blurb in the details to the right but I could not be bothered to rerecord the whole vid to correct the blooper. Good spot though. :-)

  • Yeah, not only am I a pedantic little tit, I'm an unobservant little sod too!

fair play for teaching people how to play it though, does my head in all the people that just can't play the song!

  • good video mate, love the guitar face

  • Glad you enjoyed it. Guitar face like that takes years of experience to pull off convincingly. I'm thinking about posting a "How to do rock guitar face" video for my next project. :-) Mind you, I pale into comparison with guitar face grand masters like Gary Moore!

  • Thanks alot Andy, been having few probs with that song. Got it sweet now. Nice one fella. Apreciate it.

  • Glad to have been of assistance Rob. My explanations could have been better in places but if it was a help to a few people out there then it's all good. :-)

  • very nicely done! your band is very good to!

  • Any chance you could do a video on "Tremolo picking". Someone else commented on one of my sons Bands videos (The Great Escape) and said thats the technique they should use. Asked other bloke to expand on this technique but no response to date. Searches on google werent much help!

  • Tremolo picking? Never heard of it, but when I listened to the solo on the We Are Scientists vid, it sounds like mostly string bends with a bit of speed picking at the end. This is where you just play the note as fast as you can, almost like a mandolin technique. Van Halen and John Petrucci use this quite a bit too. I think it's all "in the wrist action" so to speak. Hope this helps. :-)

  • Funny neither of my sons guitar teachers have heard of it either. Will get son to sit down and watch the vid! thats if I can get him to put his guitar down:-) Thanks

  • Glad you liked it. I tend to keep the settings on my amp fairly flat (everything on 5 or 6) and clean. This was played on my practice amp using a Zoom 8080 multifx unit preset for the sound, which is quite clean but with a touch of delay to thicken the sound a little and get close to Razorlights. The guitar is a Gibson Les Paul std set to the middle pickup position.

  • nice one man, what way u got your amp set.i play acoustic guitar a lot and never use an amp so any help would be great.great vid by the way.

  • Hi, I think you are amazing. I especially like your guitar face... :0)

  • You'd never guess that this comment is from my girlfriend would you? :-)

  • Hey man good of you to post this vid, has been a life saver. Can i just ask you if you have the tab to it cos everyone i look at on the net is slightly different and i can't always tell which string u r hittin!

    Thanks for any help

    Duv

  • Thanks for the comment. Sorry, but I can't help you with the tab. I tried to play the riff slowly enough so that you can pick what I play out by ear. If you can work on that, it's a great way to improve your "ear" for music and your playing generally. Hope this helps.

  • Cool vid mate, helped me out :)

  • Glad to have been of assistance. Thanks for the rating.
