The death knell of the rock instrumental was probably sounded with the advent of MTV and similar shows. Prior to that, we listened to the radio for our music with backup from TV shows like Top Of The Pops. Sadly the reverse is now true. Visuals are what counts, especially if they sell sex. Where are teens going to hear the range of instrumentals we heard these days, apart from in their parents' vinyl collections if they have them? Sad.
I honestly enjoy George's work better than Matt. Matt is great and all...but I wish there was more of The Tornadoes with George in it. Shame...man's so damn talented.
@mess083 this one definitely has some input into it from :16 to like :48, sounds just like the first part of Knights of Cydonia :D but telstar did become it, yes.
This is the English "Tornadoes" who released "Telstar" in '62? Because there also was an American surf band called the "Tornadoes" who release "Bustin' Surfboards" featured in "Pulp Fiction". I remember both songs when I was a kid living in LA. I believe that both went to #1 or at least in the top ten. "Telstar" was huge - a unique sound.
ETHEREAL music that could actually take you somewhere. I bought this album in 63 for Telstar but discovered this song and I still consider it the best instrumental of all time. The arrangement, the sound composition, the melody, UTTER GENIUS!!
The Tornados were way before their time, I mean The Ventures were awesome but these guys put the bar at a whole other level. MASTERS the lot of them. It reached me way out in Arizona. The whole album still resonates brilliance for the times.
@mrsjamac I totally agree with you, very much like Knights, all I suggested was a Muse version of "Ridin' the wind" would be a great result, just a wishlist thing..
I've posted previously what a great track this is. When I listen to it I get a real feeling of impending doom, urgency, excitement, anticipation and power all rolled into one!
Wooooow haha this is great to see because i was looking for Matthew Bellamy's father, i love Muse and now i know where he got his talent , if i am right he even looks like him, but this song lets me think about Muse's single Knights of Cydonia, really just listen to both songs and you will catch the simularity hihi fun!
Ha! I love your response, in my humble opinion the Tornadoes made it big time in Australia as well. Being an old fart gives me great memories of those times.
Way to go MorriconeRocks, you always pick the great ones. I own the US release of this single...it sounds fresh today. Along with Telstar, they both hold up well. Even the master felt influence from other artists. Love it, thanks.
George Bellamy was rhythm guitar Alan Caddy was lead guitar, this is actually the US version, the UK version of this track taken originally from The Sound Of The Tornados E.P. did not have the special effects at beginning.
@rcpinsa There were no sound effects on us version on the telstar lp on the back of the lp a london blueback usually reserved for classical records the copy reads that they made space sounds on telstar by blowing into microphones other sources describe them as backwards toilet bowl flushes and random radio noises
Very good recording! most of their other songs are really choppy and hard on the ears after 40 years of poor maintenance.
I'm happy to hear good music like this...and yes, I only found myself here because I looked up muse on wikipedia xD

As a nod to Matt Bellamy's dad, Muse would do a killer version of Ridin' the wind.

You can tell Matt took a lot of influence from his dads music. To me, this song sounds a lot like a proto knights of cydonia.

Actually, this whole song is written by George Bellamy! I think its the only one written purely by him.
I cant say Muse and this band sound alike, but it gives me the same vibe and "feel", ya know?
HLGGanoth 2 years ago 4
"I think its the only one written purely by him."
He also wrote "Lonely paradise" on the "Away from it all album" and "Pandora's Box", an unreleased track which you can find amongst my uploads.

I thought the song sounded so far ahead of its time - almost like one of those retro games you used to play on the Sega or Nintendo?
Georgiahulse 2 years ago
@HLGGanoth Take one guess why they might sound similar. C'mon. Take a guess. I'll give you a hint. George Bellamy. Matthew Bellamy. It's his dad :o
