I have a 1986 Toyota Conquest 4cyl....It gets about 20mpg, and only cost to date, only $42.00 to fill it up....Just got it about 4 months ago, and I love my toy house ...The only problem I had with it, being that it is only a 4cyl it won't climb steep hills unless drop the gears down to L Grear or should i say Frist...I had to learn this the hard way, it sure scared the shit out of me the first time I went up a steep mountain pass, I quess practice makes perfect when driving these little RVs.
if u put an engine in thats to small u have to thrash it, so they guzzle fuel.
obviously big petrols do also, but u could get 15mpg from a big ish v8.
a friend has a mazda/ ford ranger pickup 2500td, it does 23mpg as it weighs 2800kg.
I have spoken to people driving 7.3idi ambulances that did about that! (they use a few as private ambulances for private hospitals near me-got em cheap as they were bought for nhs hospitals but were too wide to fit in bays at emergency ward!
if it runs great, maybe $2300. Make sure it is well sealed. I see 87's for under 3 grand in nice shape sometimes. Patience helps. There is a 92 V6 with 70k for 5 grand in my neighborhood.
@bbo40 I don't know about the newer model Toyota RV's, but my '78 handled N. Cali, Oregon, Idaho (back roads, dirt), Wyoming (Yellowstone), Utah (Bryce Canyon), Colorado (Grand Canyon) with 2 people and full water tanks. It did not go fast, but I had no mechanical problems at all. It was a 19 ft, 4 cylinder, manual. I wouldn't trust the automatics, though. I needed to downshift to take hills, but never stalled out.
@brads3111 im thinking the same lol campers are worth more then trucks by them self when essentially a camper is nothing but a truck chopped off and bonded with a camper is

@covermethis1 Ha this is obviously a side issue - you're in the UK because ironically Scotland conquered England (after a fashion). SNP anyone?

My uncle has a slightly longer version of this. I must say, it's a pretty nice camper. And he really does get great gas mileage.

Those will only get about 18mpg, maybe 20 downhill with a tailwind.
They are a little underpowered but you can still keep up with traffic.
The 4cylinder versions have the legendary bulletproof 22R.
Prior to 1986 the dually axles had dangerous failure problems, older RVs were upgraded, look for a large 6 lug pattern and you are ok.
About $4000 is good for one of these.
MrHurricaneFloyd 1 year ago
I think pre 1986 there was a dully axle issue. FYI
I have Toyota Conquest 1987 with <80k I paid 4k
I did some mods to gain HP.
upgraded to hi flow air filter
upgraded to 2'" SS exhaust system from the manifold back.
I droped the engine fan and installed an electric fan. 3-4hp gain by doing this.
Adjusted the MAF.
Level ground she goes 60-65 mph in over drive.
