LIONEL A CHRISTMAS STORY #1730 0-8-0 SWITCHER STEAM ENGINE O GAUGE TRAIN SET MADE IN 2010

I bought this set last year for my younger sister and her then unborn son to run through her Christmas village. The smoke unit in that set put out about the same volume of smoke as the unit in my Legacy SD-70Ace (#28333), so I never thought much of the low smoke output. Now, comparing it to my Mikado Jr. (#38644, smokes like your set in the video), it does put out a LOT less smoke. Maybe I should just convert them all to MTH smoke units (the best I've seen in my limited time in the hobby).

@mydartswinger ya mth has one of the best smoke units iv very seen you could di that or just replace the heating element with a better one like i did that would be much cheaper to do then to buy proto smoke units and then you dont know if its going to fit or not

There's a video here on YouTube where a guy put a ProtoSmoke unit into a Hogwarts Express (along with RailSounds and TMCC). Unfortunately, it wouldn't "chuff", it just blew out mass amounts of smoke in a steady stream.

@mydartswinger i did see that one it sounds great but i would want the engine to puff out the smoke thats why it would just be better to install a good heating element for $10 in the unit thats already there and you dont have to do any custom work to your engine the heating elemets lionel puts in these unit are junk they never get hot enough

@Giminey ya mst like would have seen this as another lionel christmas set sady to say or should i say masy to say this 0-8-0 is in need of repair the drive wheels locked up and it stoped running shortly after this video was made and im kinda pissed about it this was basicly a brand new set with not even an hour of uses but after the hoildays il take a look at it

Grizzley. I just purchased the same set....like you mentioned the smoke is almost non-existant. You said you changed out the smoke unit, where did you get that and how much did it cost, is that something anyone can do? My only options are fixing the smoke or returning it. It's a cool set and I don't want to return it. Any input would help..... THANKS!

@jbnkr it will cost you around $8 to $10 shiped for the smoke fluid heating element cap on ebay it is something that most pepole can do but you have to be very careful when installing and make sure nothing is touching when its put back togeter when you open it up and you see everything that makes it tick thats the way it should look when your done and the shell it put back on

that engine is OK if your just getting into the hobby. I found a slightly lesser quality version of the 0-8-0 your running with a set for 90$ brand new. my first o gauge set. My engine fell 5 feet onto hard wood Floor without a scratch on it.

@bradstrains this is one of the sets that my kids got last year but ya its ok they seen the movie they wanted the set and i liked the rolling stock that it comes but i like the older sets much better

@b0rg9 lol ya i remeber that part i had gotten the full size leg lamp a few years ago for christmas as a gift from my ex lol i was realy surprised that she whent and got it for me but there was one catch i was only aloud to have it out in the living room for the christmas holidays
