I watched this race and always said that if Unser would not of shimmied to keep Goodyear behind him at the finish line then Goodyear would've won. His car was faster at the end. Just 1/8th of a mile more......
@cpress75 "the severe lack of american drivers" in indycar may have something to do with it being an internationally renowned series,, with races taking place in Brazil & Japan, not to mention CART held races in UK, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Australia. And the fact that it is also broadcast worldwide may make foreign drivers take notice and want to compete
@cpress75 Funny. Part of the whole original idea of IRL was supposedly to make it American-driver dominant, rather than the real rules of Indy: May The Best Win...whomever they may be, wherever they may be from.
@agabbahey It seems most of Indianapolis agrees with you. 500 ticket sales were up yet again, and the Allstate Crap at the Brickyard (the moment they whored out to a sponsor name, I peg them with it forever) was down again, from being WAY down already last year.
i always remembered this race as i watched it many years ago...
however i have been searching and always though al unser Jr and his dad al unser finished an indy 500 as Winner and 2nd place one year.... i always watched the indy 5000 for the unser family and rick mears :) as i live in long beach CA i get to visit parts of the practice and qualifying at the long beach grand prix i just watched the 2011 race i DVR :) anyway if some knows about al and his dad let me know thanks...
Al Jr said he took too much wing out on the final pit stop, and made the car very loose. You can see how poorly the car was handling here...he was exiting the turns very low, he was afraid he'd tag the wall. On the final lap in turn 3, he said he got loose, and had to back off in turn 4, which allowed Goodyear to pull up right behind him. But he still held on.
how much did uncle bobby want to call little al home, it must have been torture for him calling both his nephew and his brother winning this race & being forced to stay unbiased. still the best 500 ive ever seen though
i remember getting up early to watch the end of this when i was 11 here in australia. i don't know of a finish in any race i've seen thats been as intense as this, great stuff, i love it .
I'm a long time NASCAR fan, and I watched Jamie win the Brickyard today. But no matter how had NASCAR tries, this track is an open wheel mecca, and no way stock car looks as good as on open wheeler going around Indy.
@infantryofficer Yeah that 'warmup lane' is a joke. It was done in the name of safety but during the 1984-1992 that I watched without the indy 500 there was never a wreck involving a car getting up to speed in the 'suicide lane'. The numbers don't lie - if it aint broke dont fix it.
IIRC This was the last year of the greatness of the Indy 500. After that they had those horrific track modifications and then the IRL/CART split and the Indy 500 has never been what it once was. I am glad to have actually been there for the greatness that we will never see again.
@infantryofficer : Yeah. I'm glad that common sense preveiled and they scaled everything back a bit. Now that IZOD has solidified the sport once again maybe we can get things back to normal. I also agree with 82coma. I can do without the Danica Patrick stuff all the time. She's a good driver yes, but because women drivers have traditionally been so terrible in the sport now that they got one that is decent they rate her higher than she really is.
@infantryofficer : Well, remember back in 1995 and 96 they were hitting speeds up the 240 MPH and drivers were complaining about the G-forces so they had to scale things back a bit. I don't think they can do more than 230 MPH safely.
@infantryofficer I think you are just kinda repeating what I said. I already said they need to change the cars and "de-tech" them. What I mean by that is if you are only going to have one package (engine/chassis) for all teams make them all even. Otherwise get some competition with the engines and chassis...
@infantryofficer Eh...it's not just the track changes, though like I said is a part of the problems in the corners. You don't see a difference in the aero? Well there is a lot and the main difference is in the draft and the side drafts.
@infantryofficer IMO, the cars are worse today because you can't race (pass). 80's and 90's cars could race in the corners but now you can't. Part of the problem is the change in the track layout but much has to go to the new designs of the cars. So they run fast, that isn't what racing is all about...
This was going to be the worst 500 damn near ever till little Al grabbed the point & won. Such a shame for Roberto, this place hated his guts I think more than the Andretti's...
These were the good old days....its hard to believe this is almost 20 years ago. Powerful cars. These guys are just screaming these last 7 laps. Balls of steel.
Froze my ass off at that race.. . none of the drivers couldn't get the tire temps up after a yellow, I'm suprised there were any cars left at the end.
This race will always be the most important of the year, no matter what happens short term. All we can do as fans is enjoy the race and bring people who haven't see it there to experience a little bit of the magic.
That boneheaded director tried to be dramatic by switching cameras at the finish, but all he managed to do was ruin the moment. He should have used the camera that the replay showed. Great finish, though. Goodyear nearly won this one and had the '95 race won until he passed the pacecar.
I remember from that day, missing the finish, because they had to switch camera views. They should have stayed with the one that showed them coming down the stretch, and Goodyear swinging to the inside to (attempt to) pass. Like you said, the moron managed to ruin the live moment for those of us watching on TV.
The Indy 500 is still the 500 and im a huge race fan i watch all racing from NASCAR to NHRA but the day there is no Indy 500 i will turn that tv off and never watch another race period.
9:04 sums up the Indianapolis 500. Al Jr. said it best what a classic event I hope someday it regains its lusture. For people who doubt it ever will, just take a look back at what this track had to endure and how it overcame time and historic world events. I love the 500 mile race!
However there also was Tony Hulman Jr. at the helm to run things which is a huge difference than the current management. Can it be pulled out of the current situation? Only time will tell.
@mad122780 This is still a race I will watch no matter how poor the racing. Been watching it for 23 years. I think Indy Car is dying slowly. My opinion is to "de-tech" the cars, go back to classic shifting and make it more affordable. Oh and make the corners at Indy back to the way they were above and get some real side by side in the corners.
@mad122780 I still make sure I'm in front of my TV set on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend to watch the Indianapolis "500". And in recent years, after Indy ends, I flip the channel to the NASCAR World "600", so I end up watching about eleven hours of auto racing, including pre/post race shows.
The very first race I ever watched in its entirety. I was 5 years old and I was watching it with my dad. Ive been a diehard. Indycar/cart/champ car/IRl/ AmericanOpenwheel/ whatever you wanna call it fan ever since. I was hooked on racing from this race on!
The Greatest 10 laps ever!.... I love the in car camera of Little Al looking left and right and seeing chest move from his heavy breathing. And I sure do miss hearing Bobby Unser call a race!
Well, even if I do not like Tony George... It is not only George fault. USAC got his fault and SCCA also. In 79, CART emerge split from USAC. Then Cart receive twice some help from SCCA (organization in 79, and the drop off of the Can-am) and later IMSA (they screw their GT)... But USAC did continue with their Gold Crown with the Indy 500. IRL his just a relance of the USAC champ in some way. Result of all this crazy play: sport proto is in war (rolex vs Le Mans) and single seater been in war.
When I watch this, all I can think of is "F*** you Tony George for ruining the best type of racing that exists!!" Now were stuck with slower, uglier spec cars that make for boring races. CART in the 90's was the best and it would still be huge if it wasn't for TG!
Great win by a great driver. While "Little Al" is often pigeonholed as a oval specialist his career record shows capability on all course layouts throughout. This mirrors American open wheel racing's unique place in the world of motorsports.
i completely disagree with ANYBODY who called, pidgeonholed or sais al was an oval specialist. he didn't get his first oval pole or win until 1990. he started in the bigs in 1983!
any way u could help me. im looking for classic IRL/Cart races to broadcast on my channel during the weekdays... im looking for files. U know anywere i can find and DL whole race files? Thanks, cophole
At equivalent speeds, the safety features on an open-wheel car blows the safety on the "stock" cows to the weeds...and for machines as light as open-wheelers admittedly are, it is nothing less than incredible.
And for someone who said they'd break if they hit a leaf, maybe they should go and look at the Tom Pryce crash, at what the knife-shaped cars are horrifyingly capable of.
i miss these speeds too. lol honestly i think if the cars went this fast again, I know alot of drivers that wouldn't have the experience to handle these speeds.
This what Tony George destroy and destroying until this days. Why Tony George? i love the old days of indy and love to see now but is Sad see it desapeare. Why Tony george?
If you love racing, you shouldn't have to engage in this open wheel vs. stock car "war." Most of the old guys ran both. AJ won at Indy, Le Mans and Daytona. I will say this, though: Indy is the greatest event in American racing. No single weekend in NASCAR can beat it.
"you just don't know what indy means." he must have been talking about all of the assholes that think cutting the month down to 2 weeks is a good idea. don't worry al, WE do know what it means and that is why it is the best attended most popular, grittiest race in the world today.
Actually, this was one of the worst ever with a great finish. The carnage that day was ridiculous. Had Michael's car held on, he likely would have led over 170 laps and won.
Actually, I found it to a fascinating experience, on the whole. These days, BS groups like NASCAR would throw a yellow flag every five laps and FORCE everyone to add all downforce possible into the car, to keep control, rather than let them race a truly BIZARRE...and again, fascinating...race. 1992 is a memorial to the strangeness that can be Indy.
@johnnystir I agree, if I remember correctly 33 cars started and only 13 finished. I too agree if not for fuel pump failure Michael would have gotten the win easily.
At abour 4:36, Al Jr said he got loose, and had to back off in turn four. You can see his resulting low exit out of four. Goodyear saw it right away, and that's why he was able to pull up so close on the mainstrech. The USAC timing said a margin of 0.043 seconds, but it was revised to 0.0331 due to the location of the timing transponder in Unser's Galmer chassis
This comment has received too many negative votesshow

hey you dip shit like vampire said theres alot more than it looks and if you dont like racing quit wachting racing videos and there is also street races wow you are a fag
This was my 10th - and I was so pissed Andretti wouldnt win, I left my paddock seats, walked down Georgetown Rd pissed listening to the last 16 laps.... I heard the INDY radio network call it from turn to turn... then I was even MORE pissed I missed this close finish. Goodyrs attempt to pass wouldve been in front of me.
I was bearly even born when this happened, but looking back at it, this seems tha best era of racing. The cars looked better, the action was more exciting and i'm really disappointed that it couldn't coninues so that i could fully enjoy it.
I was at this race but was this the year it was really cold out? I can't remember. I know it was (either in the late 80's to early 90's) it was super cold out
Not only do they need Turbos for the future, but drop those damn Dallara crapwagons and bring back the beautiful classic Lola/Reynard/Penske chassis designs but with new safety packages.
The Unser Family is the greatest racing family in history. I've seen them at Indy in the 500, and I've also seen them in them in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
Alright I will give you that, both the Andretti Family and the Unser Family are the tops in racing. By the way staying with the Unser/Andretti racing tree who do you say really won the 500 in 1981, since it was switched several times between Bobby Unser and Mario Andretti.
This, the Ice 500, was the best SOUNDING battle in the history of auto racing: with as COLD as that day was, the echoes of the engines off the grandstands was nothing less than haunting, with the exit of turn one with two to go, the best example possible.
The extremely cold weather was the only thing that allowed the Galmer to be competitive. On a very warm Carb day several days earlier, neither Al Unser Jr or Danny Sullivan could run 215 mph laps.
Elsewhere, the Galmer was a mid-field car at best, even with Al and Danny at the wheel.
Still the grandest finish of all, in the world's greatest sporting event. And now as the first season of a unified body comes to an end in the closing days, and the centennial of the speedway approaches, one cannot help but wonder what the future holds for the Indianapolis 500.
One thing is for certain, this century at speed has passed by like it was standing still.
I agree it is the worlds greatest event. They need to move it back to Memorial Day Monday. That's what made it so great with all the Indy Car, F1, NASCAR and road racers all together. 50 cars competing for 33 spots. And on race day Scoot Dixon, Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, Lewis Hamilton, Philippe Massa, and Scott Pruett all in the mix.
That could never happen now. The F1 Concorde Agreement means that F1 racers can't miss a race unless they're injured. They can't race anywhere else. Indy qualifying takes weeks, they'd miss Grands Prix. The Monaco Grand Prix is on the same day, the jewel in the F1 crown. The Spanish Grand Prix two weeks earlier might have to be moved. The F1 cars are different to Indycars too, so wouldn't be allowed, the chassis could only be Dallara etc. No F1 driver at his peak will drive in the Indy500 again.
mears, big al, little al, fitipaldi, rahal, foyt, sullivan, the andretti's, luyendyk, cheever, goodyear, this was one hell of a line up, i was a huge fan of CART and F1 during this era ('89-'94), now i dont care much for the racing. i really miss the good old days.

MotorsportLegends 2 years ago
i completely disagree with ANYBODY who called, pidgeonholed or sais al was an oval specialist. he didn't get his first oval pole or win until 1990. he started in the bigs in 1983!

The hiss of Turbos at the Brickyard is amazing to hear..hope to have it back some day.

lol race laps @ 225, nowadays they qualify at those speeds. I miss the real Indycars

i miss these speeds too. lol honestly i think if the cars went this fast again, I know alot of drivers that wouldn't have the experience to handle these speeds.

This what Tony George destroy and destroying until this days. Why Tony George? i love the old days of indy and love to see now but is Sad see it desapeare. Why Tony george?

Plain and simple; it's all about the money!
bigbilly2006 2 years ago
If you love racing, you shouldn't have to engage in this open wheel vs. stock car "war." Most of the old guys ran both. AJ won at Indy, Le Mans and Daytona. I will say this, though: Indy is the greatest event in American racing. No single weekend in NASCAR can beat it.

theres just something special about Indy

These machines are badass... NASCAR? I could turn MY car into a racing stock car and win a race lol
jeffamarie 2 years ago 2
Jeffamarie,
Haha! Badass? I bet those cars would break if they hit a leaf that blew onto the track. They may be light and fast, but I wouldn't call them badass.
ScottyKnol2409 2 years ago
If you're going top speed in a stock car OR an F1, and you hit the wall, you're out of the race... so I don't see how that's relevant...
What IS badass is the fact that some of these guys crash at 230+ mph and LIVE. The frame is a hell of a lot stronger than anything in YOUR car.

Will there ever be a better Indy 500 than this one was from start to finish?
Other than the pole sitter "Roberto Guerrero" crashing on the parade lap...this was the best I'd ever seen.
inspyrdbychet 2 years ago
Actually, this was one of the worst ever with a great finish. The carnage that day was ridiculous. Had Michael's car held on, he likely would have led over 170 laps and won.
johnnystir 2 years ago 2
Actually, I found it to a fascinating experience, on the whole. These days, BS groups like NASCAR would throw a yellow flag every five laps and FORCE everyone to add all downforce possible into the car, to keep control, rather than let them race a truly BIZARRE...and again, fascinating...race. 1992 is a memorial to the strangeness that can be Indy.
VampireYoshi 2 years ago 4
I agree...Michael would have won easily.
inspyrdbychet 2 years ago 2
@johnnystir I agree, if I remember correctly 33 cars started and only 13 finished. I too agree if not for fuel pump failure Michael would have gotten the win easily.

At abour 4:36, Al Jr said he got loose, and had to back off in turn four. You can see his resulting low exit out of four. Goodyear saw it right away, and that's why he was able to pull up so close on the mainstrech. The USAC timing said a margin of 0.043 seconds, but it was revised to 0.0331 due to the location of the timing transponder in Unser's Galmer chassis

I heard the INDY radio network call it from turn to turn... then I was even MORE pissed I missed this close finish. Goodyrs attempt to pass wouldve been in front of me.

I'd say Andretti family, but Unser's r great
ajarvinen 3 years ago
Alright I will give you that, both the Andretti Family and the Unser Family are the tops in racing. By the way staying with the Unser/Andretti racing tree who do you say really won the 500 in 1981, since it was switched several times between Bobby Unser and Mario Andretti.

This, the Ice 500, was the best SOUNDING battle in the history of auto racing: with as COLD as that day was, the echoes of the engines off the grandstands was nothing less than haunting, with the exit of turn one with two to go, the best example possible.

He says somthing like, "Robin Miller said the Galmer was slow on the ovals..."
DavidSkywalker01 3 years ago
It was slow on ovals.

One thing is for certain, this century at speed has passed by like it was standing still.
racermac1988 3 years ago 2
I agree it is the worlds greatest event. They need to move it back to Memorial Day Monday. That's what made it so great with all the Indy Car, F1, NASCAR and road racers all together. 50 cars competing for 33 spots. And on race day Scoot Dixon, Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, Lewis Hamilton, Philippe Massa, and Scott Pruett all in the mix.
mno0624 3 years ago 3
Mmmm, sounds good and all, but sponsorships would be a pain in the ass.
BlueFox284 3 years ago
That could never happen now. The F1 Concorde Agreement means that F1 racers can't miss a race unless they're injured. They can't race anywhere else. Indy qualifying takes weeks, they'd miss Grands Prix. The Monaco Grand Prix is on the same day, the jewel in the F1 crown. The Spanish Grand Prix two weeks earlier might have to be moved. The F1 cars are different to Indycars too, so wouldn't be allowed, the chassis could only be Dallara etc. No F1 driver at his peak will drive in the Indy500 again.
