Im pretty sure this is from Mike Portnoy's Liquid Drum Theater instructional DVD. I might be wrong, i haven t watched it in a while.

To settle any confusion, LTE was supposed to be MP's prog side project unrelated to DT for magna carta, It started out that way with MP, Tony Levin, and Jordan Rudess. Now JR wasn't in DT at the time. The week long window where LTE could be recorded was coming up too fast and MP couldn't find another guitar player in time, so he asked JP to play on it.

Yes, orignally, Mike was trying to get other guitar players, Petrucci was a last minute addition. Jordan Rudess was not a member of DT yet (Dixie Dregs) so technically, LTE was only 1/2 DT.
