  • Kill screen kicked in. (Brian Kuy)

  • what stops a player from standing still and jumping over barrels in the same spot for six hours to farm points?

  • @wolfumz on the top right corner of the screen there is a bonus timer which ticks down by 100 points every second. when that timer reaches 0 you have about 4 seconds to clear the board. if you don't finish the board by then, you die.

  • @hank804 ah, thank you for responding. Best of luck to you, this game looks ridiculously unforgiving.

  • Anyone who thinks this guy is a cheater just go to Twin Galaxies, or Wiki, or any other site that shows who holds the world record for Donkey Kong. Nice job Hank.

  • Just recently got into this whole thing from watching The King Of Kong documentary last night. Found out about you and your scores as well, well done Hank. You are incredible. You and Steve are truly amazing players.

  • Napoleon Dynamite YESSSS.

  • That second run after the kill screen was terrible...walking off the edge like that...(joking)

  • Hank is awesome at Donkey Kong, for someone to say he's a cheat is foolish, I personally watched him playing it at richie knucklez arcade in new jersey and it blew my mind, absolutely incredible

  • @AlMcGlothlen Thanks for that. My last world record was done in public on the Funspot machine and I won the Kong Off in front of 200+ people, yet people still call me a cheat. Unfortunately, there will always be haters.

  • So, how do you get DK points on the Rivet Board? Do you just jump near him or do you mess around with the joystick AND jump?

  • @TheDARKYOSHI64 You can either stand really close to DK (literally one pixel away) and just jump. Or the safer way is to stay within the "cage" (vertical bars) near DK and jump straight up and hit left or right at the peak of the jump.

  • Obviously hacked board. There's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too few wild barrells.

You're a cheat and a hack and everyone knows it.

  • Is it just me, or does it seem like the barrels in your game seem... not as random as when I play? I usually get stuck below a ladder because there isn't enough time between barrels to safely climb the ladder.

  • @Deliciousfruit233 you're right, they're not as random. You need to learn how to control the barrels. Watch the King of Kong-- there's a scene where Steve Wiebe shows you how to do it.

  • @hank804 So they're not random? That's interesting. Is there any way to control the fireballs in the rivet stage as well?

  • @Deliciousfruit233 Well the barrel control is not 100%, (it gets better in the later stages), so there is still some randomness built in. As to whether the fireballs are controllable is a complicated question. In the code they are completely random, but you can influence the random numbers by user input. So, a lot of people (not me) think they can "control" the fireballs.

  • I would sacrifice my last man on the last rivet stage before the kill screen, that way you can get those jumping cheat points an extra time.

  • @ophelius111 those jumping cheating points are not worth much at later stages because the bonus timer counts down too fast and even then you are not guaranteed that you can trap the fireballs (this is harder to do on the later stages). the best players in the world can average about 7000-8000 points on rivets, but 11000-12000 points on barrels. plus the best players in the world find the barrel stage (more skill based) easier than the rivet stage (more luck based).

  • @hank804 Thanks for that info, I didn't know that. ;)

  • I'm coming for you Hank... only 890,000 points behind.

  • @Riiye Good luck!

  • billy mitchell eat yer balls out lol

  • yesssssssssssss.....

  • WATCHING THIS SHOWS ME HOW BAD MY DK NEEDS A CAP KIT

  • @johnclintonlopez At the time this video was made my monitor was freshed re-capped by richieknucklez!

  • That's great man. I'm still working on it.

  • Nicely done...great video

  • I would go to the kong offs and play on the radar cab but don't know how many people are going to play on it. Have you got any info on that yet?

  • congrats on your new higher score. 1.1 is right there in reach.

  • Very good job!

    I have 2 questions:

    1. At 06:51 you get points just by jumping! Why?

    2. Why do you get killed? You already destroyed the last barrel...!

  • @DenOndeBoss 1. If you hit left or right while jumping the machine looks under Mario to see if there are any object that you jumped over. If it detects something, you get 100 points. In other words, the machine thinks you're jumping over Donkey Kong. 2. I was sacrificing my last man for points since I was near the killscreen. If you have extra lives at the end you get to play the killscreen over again, but you don't get as many points.

  • @hank804 1. Ok, nice :)

    2. But how could you get killed by the barrel, you already destroyed it with your hammer...?

Also, when you mention "the killscreen" is it a specific screen/stage or place where you always die? Is it not possible to play forever if you got unlimited lives or something like that?

  • @DenOndeBoss Oh, I misunderstood your question. You're talking about the last death. That screen is called the killscreen because of an internal bug (overflow) you only have about 8.5 seconds on that screen before you die. There's no way to clear that board as far as anyone knows. It's always on the 117th board (or the 1st board on level 22). Even if you had unlimited lives, you can't get to the top in 8.5 seconds no matter what.

  • @hank804 Ok! That's weird they programmed it that way! Guess they never thought anyone would ever get that far ;o)

  • @DenOndeBoss I don't think it was programmed that way, I just think that they ran out of memory. The old arcade games from this era had a finite amount of memory avaliable. A lot of the older arcade machines have kill screens.

  • Comment removed

  • @DenOndeBoss its programmed in the game you retard its considered dodging donkey kongs arm.

  • Amazing how Billy Mitchell's 1982 record stood for over 20 years, and now it has been broken countless times over just the last few years. I bet top Donkey Kong players like you and Steve Wiebe pass the old 1982 record on a regular basis while playing.

  • @NintendoManiac2010 It's funny, but you're right. If I was playing safely, I could beat that score probably 1 in 3 games now. Not to say I'm better than Billy Michell, but it's kind of like the 4 minute mile. Once 1 person did it, many followed. The knowledge that it's possible makes it easier.

  • I almost made it to the kill screen I had one level left and all my lives then I got killed by fire balls that trapped me and I couldn't get passed them

  • You are the man. Saw fistful of quarters and was an awesome movie. Hope when u break the record they don't screw you. Your an amazing player. I play smb and am trying to get a 5:00 run. It seems when you get there its 5:01 or 5:02 everytime lol

  • How long have you had this Donkey Kong arcade?

  • good job

  • Amazing job! Thanks for sharing. How many hours of play did it take to get this good?

  • @awiginton At the time this game was played, I was about 1 year into playing DK (about 300-400 hours I would say).

  • @hank804 Really? Congratulations on setting a new world record! What was your score on it?

  • @Cypryssss First time: 1,061,700. Second time: 1,068,000. You can find highlights of my first world record on youtube too (click on my channel).

  • This video deserves a ton more video views because its no easy task getting 1000000 + score on donkey kong. PS: You was about 12k score away from world record.

  • @Cypryssss I broke the world record a few months later. It subsequently got broken by Billy Mitchell, then Steve Wiebe and recently by me again!

  • @hank804

@ the 3:25 mark your really not getting any extra points

  • @WPGinterceptor yes, but i'm sacrificing that man because i'm 1 screen away from the killscreen. the barrel board is the board that has the most points, which is why you choose to sacrifice any remaining men on the last barrel board. if i claim the bonus by finishing the board, i get moved to the rivet board. if you sacrifice on a rivet, you'll usually get less than on the barrels. if you take a spare man to the killscreen, you only get like 700 points.

  • @WPGinterceptor By sacrificing the man on the barrel board, I get to play that board twice. Therefore, getting an extra 9000-10000 points that I wouldn't ordinarily have had.

  • dude do you own this machine in your house

  • @kristjenM yes, i pown this machine

  • @kristjenM no it in his billys house duh lol

  • haha nice to watch a world record holder play at home... thanks for sharing :)

  • Hey Hank! Congrats on the score!! Quick question, twin galaxies won't except a highscore if you get it by playing it on mame will they? It has to be on the cabinet right?

  • @TheCardBoardKid Twin Galaxies will accept MAME scores, but on a seperate scoreboard. The MAME world record is actually higher than the arcade world record. bit (dot) ly/gTBLNm

  • now only if you acted like a gigantic douchebag can you be like billy mitchell.

  • Wow i was like holding my breath the whole time. Loved the "King of Kong" ref., I busted out laughing!

  • Can you "control" the barrels on the NES version of the game? I've been trying to do it on the NES version and I think it might be working, but I wasn't sure if that was just a placebo lol

  • @MasterChief3624 I haven't really played the NES version as it's very different from the original arcade, so I'm not sure.

  • @hank804 Oh all right. That's cool :P I've been having fun with it since I don't have access to an arcade cabinet.

Hey are you Hank Chien? The guy that just got the new world record for Donkey Kong? If so, congratulations :D That must feel great. :)

  • @MasterChief3624 If you don't have access to an arcade, you can play on MAME. It's identical to the arcade (minus the controls), that's how I started. and yes, that's me! and thanks.

  • @hank804 I have not heard of MAME before, but from what I'm reading it's an emulator? Is it legal? I was always worried about emulators because of the grey area of legality that surrounds them.

    And awesome :D

  • @MasterChief3624 The emulator is completely legal, it's just software if you think about it. It's the ROMs that are the grey area. From what I know if you own the original you are entitled to own the ROM. However, I know ROMs are rampant and lots of people have/play them. Of course that doesn't make it right, but it does make it less likely someone will pursue you.

  • Hey way to go on your new world record and getting your title back. Getting close to 1, 070.000.

  • did you save the highscore?

  • @EduMiguel16 this game was only 1/2 recorded, but it doesn't matter, i have higher scores fully recorded. my current official high score on twin galaxies is 1,061,700.

  • @hank804 For what version of donkey kong, because I see no name/score on the twin galaxies board that matches you. Was it for something other than the regular cab?

  • @TheNgamerz Original arcade. bit (dot) ly/f2GL

  • lol when watching the video I immediatly thought you'd be playing from NYC. Man wth there are people on this earth giving their life to live there, figurally.

you play donkey kong donkey :)

Go hit the streets and have some fun! more excitement there then in a game of donkey kong.

  • @FFMSmit what makes you think I don't get out? hahahah =)

  • @FFMSmit

you shoudn't talk down on people who have hobbies. it's some of the most rewarding experiences with life even if it may be something personal.

  • Why did you have to sacrifice your spare man?

  • @Taylor255 The sacrifice is done to get extra points. On that screen he got 8,800 points before dying.

  • My friend has one of these machines and he said he had it since he was a little kid (He's in college presently). It was beat up and everything, but it still worked for something that was probably older than both of us.

But playing this game today without playing it in its prime is so different. I can't imagine how people back then thought these games were fun. They're so simple and boring for today standards.

  • @JetHawk Donkey Kong was made in 1981, so that cabinet is about 29 years old. Unfortunately, I'm older than that... hahaha. I agree the games back then were very simple, but I wouldn't say they were boring. The games back then focused on gameplay because that's all they had... no fancy sound effects, graphics or controllers.

  • @hank804 In fact I think they recycled the sound effects from Radar Scope and used them with Donkey kong. I mean they added stuff like donkey kong stomp but for the most part recycled.

  • @hank804 well... i wasn't alive at the time yet but i do know a little about gaming history and just like you have it nowadays with polygons, you had it back then with e.g. the sprite count. and in the beginning, you only had pong with that very simple controller, then buttons came along, then a second and a third one, etc.. same goes for the sounds... and i bet somebody who only played pong before would've thought that donkey kong was a gigantic technological achievement :)

  • @hank804 mind you, i'm not saying i completely disagree with you, i'm just saying that people are IMO romanticizing the past a little when they argue like that because there sure was a war of advancing technology going on back then as well. and i'm certain there were also already pretty games with crappy gameplay back then. of course of a different magnitude than nowadays, with million dollar budgets...

  • Comment removed

  • you killed yourself. that was not the kill screen.

  • new mission: try to get the lowest scoring kill screen possible

  • @BRGxRandomHero that would be extremely boring as it would involve running down the bonus timer intentionally in safe spots (barrels and springs have 100% safe spots).

  • @BRGxRandomHero i think it would be fun lol

  • @BRGxRandomHero the lowest score possible is 800X21 (16800 points)

  • What a freak, omg

  • Wow, well done. I like how you get excited over setting your accomplishment, rather than some high score vids you see where the people act like nothing just happened.

  • Sequel to KoK.

  • I guess the war is not over yet! Time to get a

  • How do they know you got like 1037000 and not 37000?

  • @MachidaLyoto the million point rollover is in the video. also it would be hard to get to level 22 with only 37000 points (probably harder than getting 1037000).

  • @hank804

    Thanks, Hank.

By the way what is your reaction to Steve getting the record again?

Are you going to launch another attempt?

  • @MachidaLyoto He's been working hard to get the record and he's a great guy, so he deserves the title! I will attempt the record at some point, but time is always limited for me.

  • @hank804 When Billy took your record I read that he stopped on the early part of level 21. Do you think that he's achieved a really high score on tape that we haven't seen yet? I read he was on pace for a 1.1 mill. in that game he got the record. Also I seen that you have a high score on MAME not the highest . How do the two compare? I play on an x-arcade controller and it's an 8 way controller which has killed me more than helped. It's still a great controller only if it could go to 4 way.

  • @bliss1083 yeah, he stopped i believe on 21-1. he was on pace for over 1.1M i don't think he has any recorded scores. he believes in live scores. his rumored high is around 1.12M. I stopped playing MAME a while ago (after my first killscreen which is the submitted score). I've switched almost exclusively to arcade. occasionally i will play in MAME when I'm trying something new. the 2 play identically except the controls. I have an x-arcade too, but it sucks for donkey kong.

  • @hank804 you can buy a 4 way joystick and install it into the x-arcade but you may need a bit of electrician skills. Ben Falls (fellow DK'er) uses the Mag-Stik Plus. I've felt his joystick... it's much closer to the realy thing, but not quite the same still.

  • @hank804 I've looked at a few that switch from 4 to 8 way but couldn't find enough reviews for me to make the step. I might look into getting that. I've read about him in one of the forums when you made the mame kill screen. I'll def. look into getting the 4 way or better yet the arcade if I can find one at a steal. I'm gonna check out the mag stik plus for now. Right on for the info.

  • @hank804 I just did 593,900 but I still have my 8 way joystick. I didn't record for once. I can't believe that happened. It seems like the "Harder" the game gets it really gets easier. Made it to level 15 so I'm still stoked even though I don't have it recorded. I did take a picture but since I broke my recorded by over 2x's my original high score I think I can break out another score like that. I'm def. on the hunt for an arcade now.

  • @hank804 Oh yeah it does. It's a good controller when used in 8 way games but it's def. not made for donkey kong. I'm pushing 300k, haven't got there yet but real close. I just submitted the 1-1 scores for 10,800 and 265k for high scores on mame. It's not great but I'll get better. Thing is with my 265k score I died twice while I changed my sons diaper. So I know I can do better.Good luck with getting your title but too. I hope to see you in king of kong 2, lol.

  • @GamererYT Billy helped Doris with Q*bert. And yes, Billy's tape was thrown out (not shown in KoK), but it was later verified by Robert Mrcuzek.

  • @GamererYT If this was the case, (and of course im only talking from footage ive seen) did it take him so long to turn up to an event with steve weibe.. even though the venue was on his own doorstep? anyone with good sportsmanship would have turned up ready to go HEAD TO HEAD!!! full of life.. instead he acted like a complete child.. sending in video tapes.. what would have been GREAT!! is if steve had beat the score on the TAPE and made it redundant.. why act like such a tard over a score?

  • you are awesome hank. dont give up man, keep trying and pressing for more ways to improve. im rooting for you.

  • Is this Steve Wiebe?

  • @MegaHammerman No, it's Hank. (currently 3rd place on Donkey Kong arcade).

  • @hank804 oh cool

  • Steve Wiebe said that king of kong was fake and that they him and billy mitchell had played together a couple of years before it was filmed and that hes offended by the movie and that everyone theres a nice guy and Steve Wiebe dosent hold the high score: Billy Mitchell got an 100% game and another guy beat Steve Wiebe (check on the twin galaxies website)

  • @991woot119 I do know that there were a lot of factual omissions in the King of Kong and perhaps some things taken out of context. I wouldn't go as far as saying it was completely fake, perhaps just some misrepresentations/clever editing. The max score on Donkey Kong will never be achieved so no Billy has not had a "100% game". And yes, I am the guy who beat (at the time) both Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell. But Billy Mitchell has struck back and currently has the record.

  • @hank804 Have you checked the twin galaxies website?

  • @991woot119 100% just refers to the % of the highest score, so by definition the highest score is always 100%. But if I say beat Billy Mitchell's score by 1% then his score becomes 99%.

  • @hank804 and Steve strikes again.... you cant fake how much of an asshole bill mitchell is.. he clearly didnt like steve.. in whatever context you place it.. even from his whole body language when talking about him.. you could tell the guy LOVED!!! being on top.. had been there for a LONG!! time.. and hated anyone who challenged it.. nice one hank btw.. sweet ass score..

  • Nice job on that first million points game! Voice recognition also works for me ;-) lol. I love the noise of the joystick and button when you play. Nice game.

  • I was playing the NES version on a PSP Go with an emulator and using savestates throughout the game (so I have infinite lives basically) and the game goes on forever. Levels 1-10, letters A-Z, then it starts using weird symbols combined with letters. I went through least 150 screens then I gave up. I went over a million points also. Mine doesn't count but don't play the NES version people!

  • nice job man, haha. *win level* '' YES!!!* hahahaha

  • Is it true you can control what ladders the barrels go down by your movements? I watched King of Kong and Wiebe was saying you can actually control the barrel movements. Because it seem you also move jumpman in a way to control it.

  • @vargulf19 yes. it's a bit simplier than described in the KoK. any barrel that's above you is controllable. just run toward that ladder the moment it's passing over the ladder and it is more likely to come down. this behavior is more obvious starting L4. in the early levels it's not as controllable.

  • @hank804 Thanks, Good luck and I hope you get #1

  • oh well good luck to you Hank question, when you play on other Donkey Kong machines do the controls bother you? I have a Donkey Kong cabinet of my own and I have find myself getting distracted by the ball You know the little hole where the setscrew is don’t like feeling and I find myself turning the ball around so I don’t feel it,,, do you know what im talking about and how do you over come it ?

    Robert

  • @uhfnutbar1 yes, if i'm playing on a machine other than my own it does take me a game or 2 to get adjusted. as for the screwhole, it used to bother me, but i've gotten used to it. i think you can buy them without the screwhole at mikesarcade.

  • to bad so sad

  • How long did this take?

  • @Eurt76 2 hours 35 minutes.

  • I have a very serious question about your score. From 6:51 - 7:05 when you were jumping and getting those points is that legal to do if you want to be in the twin galaxies score board or do they consider that a cheat? Do you know, or does anybody here know?

  • @MrGodsWeapon goingwithzed asked me the same question here 5 months ago. The bottom line is yes, it's legal by twingalaxies' rules. If you look at the bonus timer, you'll see that it ticks down almost as fast as you can jump, so in reality you're not gaining as many points as you would think (only few hundred most of the time). Plus any mistakes doing it means you could be losing points. All the top players in the world (Billy Mitchell, Steve Wiebe) use that technique.

  • @hank804 okay sounds good! Now I'm going to go brake a million haha!

  • IT'S OVER 9000... *gets slapped in the face*

  • Yep, that was an Amazing Job! From one record holder to another!:)

  • Holy crap this is so awesome! Do you give lessons? LOL

  • haahahahahah Napolean Dynamite

  • NICe!!

  • congrats Hank on the awesome DK scores!!

  • You got the world record? WOW! Feel bad for Steve Wiebe though. He's been chasing the record for years and you came out of no where and just took it from Billy. Now Steve's got a new opponent.

  • @eventzz no. Steve was chasing the official acceptation of his record, and the process take just a few months. Steve is just a tookie in videogaming, he is awesome :D Fuck you billy.

  • who are u? isnt the world record 1 million pionts?

  • Congrats on breaking the record man, it's crazy. I read your interview on Twin Galaxies good stuff. I hope to see you break another big record.

  • very nice game man. I like watching other peoples games to get some tips. Right now im at 116k. Only been playing seriously for 3 weeks

  • Very nice Hank. Thanks for sharing it. And congrats on your new High score!

  • "yesssssss" sounds like napolian dynamite. awesome playing dude

  • he's good, but he'd never beat lucas. j/k

    Bad ass man.

  • Wow. You are a hell of a player. Thanks for sharing the vid. That was great.

  • Congratulations on the new record! You're getting some nice press over at Kotaku. :-)

  • Hank, congratz on your record!

Please post your video you submitted with your record score on it so we check it out!

    Thanks!

  • LOL at the potential kill screen annotation!

  • The part at 5:53 killed me. Very nice touch! Fuck Billy Mitchell and more importantly, fuck Brian Kuh. Twin Galaxies really tarnished their reputation by refusing to accept Steve Wiebe's tape while accepting Mitchell's tape even though there was a suspicious frame blur right at the million-point rollover mark. Even though Walter Day eventually apologized to Wiebe, they allowed the petty politics to get in the way of their integrity and impartiality.

  • do you have free play or is that illegal for the high score

  • nice one dude. congrats on the high score.

  • dude question do you have a high score save kit

  • nice score when I first popped up on here I saw Congrats on you beating the world record.... I was like WHAT!!!! so I went on twin galaxies and I said to myself my god he actually did it and I had a chat with him about submitting a score like 2 weeks earlier and I was like sure he's gonna beat the world record but now I am like OH MY GOD this is so amazing congratulations but don't get to cocky I am coming for your score MUHAAAHAHAHAHAH!! (coughing.......) sorry I have a cold lol

  • Congrats on today buddy, I'm glad you beat Billy.

  • Congrats Hank!!!!!!!!!!, such a huge accomplishment, I currently have not submitted any scores, but I can score in the top 25, about 317,000 or so, but I stopped improving at that point, way to never give up, and achieve such an elite status!!!! Plastic surgeon equals way too good with your hands?? ;)

  • YOU DID IT!!!!!!

  • Congrats Hank!!! I have been playing for about 2 1/2 weeks and recorded my first 100,000 point game tonight (101,300) In your opinion should I be ahead of that now or is my production at a good rate??? Thanks for the help and good luck on your future high scores!!

  • hehe yeah i read on the interviews that, you shook everyone by surprise with the new score.

and people are now curious to see the DK video score. and thats great that you're going to be on dwayne documentary, in the coin up tv show he mentioned he interview other people that have gotten to the kill screen. by any chance do you know when is the new trailer going to be shown? there was one but they taken down

  • congratz to the new world record !

  • jesus dude, you did it!

    1,061,700

i bet dwayne is gonna make a last minute update on his movie

    szcerby must be pissed

cuz he always wanted to be the first to break the 1050200 score

    congrats

  • Tim Sczerby actually emailed me to congratulate me. He's not pissed at all. Dwayne interviewed me in Nov about DK for his doumentary already. Lots of people on the net say "I came out of no where', but I've been at this a while!

  • nice game play you should make it into a dvd and send it to twin galaxies you would be the third best in the world now that would be an honor

  • I already have the third place spot, although it was a lower scoring game than this one (non killscreen). I'll submit if I beat Billy Mitchell's score.

  • Why this video was not accepted by Twin Galaxies? ah, and I almost forgot, congratulation, very good gameplay right there!! How long have you been playing?

  • This game was done during the time Twin Galaxies had the "live" rule ie any score over 1M had to be performed live in front of a senior referee. Furthermore, because of the rule I was not recording every game I played and only started recording this game about 1/2 way through. I've been playing a bit over a year now. One of these days I'll go for the world record, but someone may beat me to the punch.

  • HANK CHIEN!!!!!!! This guy is the real deal!!!!

  • awesome score...gl getting THE high score :)

  • So jumping repeatedly to gain 100 points on the blue screen is legal? Seems sorta like a glitch to me but I know very little about the rules

  • yes, it is considered legal by twingalaxies' rules although i believe it was not intended by the programmers to be used that way. since there is a time limit to each board, you cannot do it forever. plus on the later boards the bonus timer counts down so fast, it only gains you a few hundred points... and that's only if you do it "perfectly"

  • That bitch of a fireball.

  • Very impressive play! But it seems like now that everybody knows a bit more about the game thanks to Steve, Billy and the movie, It's just not very compelling anymore. But, you're better than Brian Kuh so keep forging on.
