There's just something amazing about Michael Maguire's voice. I'm not as big of a Ramin fan as everyone else here. He always goes sharp at the end of his long sustained notes, and while I think it could be a stylistic choice, it's still annoying to listen to.
Anthony Warlow, Michael Maguire and Ramin Karimloo are definate bests. Anthony didn't sound great in this, I know, but on the CSR he is so good, just spine-tingling with that strong, commanding voice. It's pure <3. But I've always loved Michael Maguire, he was the first Enjolras I listened to- he sounds so revolutionary, you know? Rage dripping from his voice. And Karimloo, sometimes I think its hard to hear him, but his voice really busts out on those soaring high notes. Plus, JOJ was good too.
David Burt bugs me. The way he says/sings the lines just doesn't work for me. At all. Micheal Maguire is <3. First actor I saw as Enjy. Special place in my <3
Anthony is good. Although his slightly emotionless acting could use some help, I still love him.
Ramin is good. I like him better as the Phantom or Marius, but oh well.
I'm so amused. In the late 1990's I had an audio tape labeled "Too Many Cafe Scenes" that was just this, a comparison, but I did more than just this bit if I had it. I did as much of it as I had.
Anthony is very good, he can hit the high notes and has a very powerful set of pipes. But I don't like Anthony's vibratto that much... he overpasses too much, it's not consistent. I prefer Maguire's vibratto (and vocal delivery in general) over everyone's heard here.
Oh by the way I have news for you all. If the Maguire version was picked up from the "overdubbed" TAC rather than the unmodified version - or the Original Broadway Cast - that ringing last note IS Warlow's!
Maguire cracked *horribly* on that last note in the TAC! The person who posted the series of TAC excerpts "overdubbed from the CD" admitted to taking it one step further on "Lamarque" and dubbing in Warlow's high note from the CSR. (It works because their voices are just similar enough.)
I'm inclined to think it's the Broadway version, because the cheering etc& continues in the background. (That was posted here the month before this compilation was made.) Maguire in his prime *had* that note, but he'd lost it by the TAC.
There's also a Drew Sarich rendition posted on YouTube. The notes are sound, the interpretation is very, very different (*his* Enjolras really seems to grieve for Lamarque!). Look it up.
FOURTH attempt at a response (what's wrong with YouTube? Apologies if earlier posts show up!).
No, it was one particular YouTube user who decided to "improve" the excerpt before uploading it. There's another one that has it exactly as it was on the CD/DVD - "oops" and all.
hmmm I watched the real TAC video, I don't think he "cracks" in that note, he just sings it not as powerful and ringing. I am a singer, I know what "cracking" is and it absolutely sounds WAY worse than what he did.
This Maguire version is a bootleg from the 1987 Broadway show. He sounds fantastic.
By the way, his voice didn't *crack* in TAC, he had to strain to hit "We Call!" and so his voice sounded thin but he *did* hit the notes so give him a break. TAC was the first thing I'd ever heard/seen of anything Les Mis and even though Enjolras isn't *that* big a role, Quast, Salonga, Maguire, Wilkinson and Ball were the real standouts to me of everyone.
Ramin is Brilliant. He should have stayed here. He was offered JvJ But he took Phantom. Phantom is a great role, but his voice suits JvJ more. He has a hard voice. The phantom should be seductive.
My problem with him is that he really didn't look the role, and he had to perform in the footsteps of Aaron Lazar, who was probably the best Enjolras America has seen a decade.
"But what's with Warlow not even taking a stab at it? He rocks it on the Symphonic recording, what was the problem?"
That was from the Australia Day concert in 1989(?). Live, open-air, no chance of do-overs. Maybe he was a little off his feed that particular day? Who knows? You'd have to ask him - and he might not tell.
Maguire is my true Enjolras although there are other great ones. It's just a good role, period. When I came back from Montana I sat next to a lady on the train who was a stage performer from Washington D.C. She saw I was listening to Les Mis & she told me she saw it on Broadway when she was 15. I asked who her favorite characters were and stuff--she said she always loved Fantine & Marius but Broadway made her love Enjolras because Maguire was absolutely stellar and stole the show from everyone.
Ramin rocks it out. Great diction, bad recording and far too fast which is not his fault. Gorgeous note, love how he doesn't use vibrato till the end.
flukey9286: Haha, the other barricade boys (and potentially audience members) are basically yelling over him, leading to a sort of jumble until he ROCKS the high note.
Man... OMG, such a lack of knowledge, cant you understand this is an arrange... musical arrange. He can hit the hight note.... pffff, he sings higher notes in phantom, jekyll etc.
Okay - actually I just saw the cast list for the Chelmsford concert. You're right, he was Marius there - with Frances Ruffelle as Eponine! Like to hear that.
I am thinking of doing that from" Let us die facing our foes...." I'll download an audio of Gary Mauer first though, I think this comparison is missing Gary.

@envyru I didn't even know there was a change of lyrics, same case in Phantom. Still bugs me a little >_<
Also can anyone tell me when JOJ played Enjolras? I didn't know he played the revolutionary leader...

Anthony Warlow I would follow anyday, even if he doesn't go for the note here.
Ramin's 'await' and 'call' are epic.
Max von Essen, Stephen R Buntrock & Matt Cammelle awesome too.

OMG RAMIN.
You cannot hear him AT ALL throughout, like, the whole thing, because everyone else is yelling over him. But the "CAAAAAALL" is breathtaking.
So it's Ramin, JOJ, Cammelle, Maguire, and Buntrock, in that order, for me. I wish Aaron Lazar were in this... he's amazing, too.

@flukey9286 he's just singing a different version. this is what he's singing
"On his funeral day
They will honor his name
With the light of rebellion ablaze in their eyes
From the candles of grief we will kindle our flame
On the tomb of Lamarque shall our barricade rise!"
idk if you've seen the 25th anniversary in the O2, but he sings the same thing in that

Great ... can't wait!
I know the whole thing runs about 2 1/2 minutes, but any chance of having different pairs of JVJ/Javerts doing part of "The Confrontation"?
Presguy 3 years ago
That's a great thought, I can manage 4 , limited to 10 mins but could always do 2 lots. Any preferences.
PHANTOMfan08 3 years ago
If I had to choose four, I'd pick ones with JOJ and Colm(live, not from albums) as JVj, and McCarthy and Quast(also live) as Javert.
Presguy 3 years ago
your lucky I got all those. I am doing an Epilogue one, then Final baatle and then I'll do that one.
PHANTOMfan08 3 years ago
That's funny. I was going to suggest this after seeing your Valjean and Javert comparisons. You ought to do 'The Final Battle' sometime.
#1. Michael Maguire
