Here in the Ozarks I was raised on Polk salad & scrambled eggs YUMMMM!! = )) We used hog jowl drippens to cook them in & served it with a slice of home made corn bread ( also backed in drippens for flavor of course =) I missed out on it last yr due to having my 6th child but this yr I am all in = )) thanx for sharing hun .....
Misty. I think you guys would be better off health wise to do what you are doing but leave out the hotdogs. It's a shame to live so pure then be eating hotdog meat. Have you ever read the ingridents? I loved grilled hot dogs...until I read what was in them...Not trying to tell yall how to live as I think you and MM and your family are awesome!
Being a new subscriber, I am trying to catch up :) Growing up in the San Diego, CA (my family roots, however, is Tennessee, Kentucky and Arkansas), I never heard of Poke Salad (except that song from the late 1960's...Poke Salad Annie) and this video is fascinating. You a wonderful job of explaining everything you do. I appreciate that so much! Thank you for your videos :)
@snaps81625 Yes, unless it is old and big, then I would boil it about 3-4 times...but that prob. would not be neccassary.....We usually do not eat it after it gets to big in the hot summer...Thanks!
The first time I heard of poke salad was in a song by Tony Joe White. (One of my favourite artists). Happy to see after many years what it is. Looks yummy.
Wow love that honeysuckle. .. my grandmother had one that was as tall as her house and ten of us grandchildren could hold hands and just barley get around it ... miss that smell but not the bees
Good video & good to know. Wikipedia says ALL parts of the plant are poisonous unless >properly prepared. (They quote 'big thinkers' in the Iowa Extension Service). Thumbs up on good country skills!
There >will be an economic collapse with a long depression as it's arithmetic certain. It's always good to have life-skills for hard times. & We all need to prepare for the harder times ahead.
The folks thinking there will be a Zombie-Apocalypse> are spend too much time playing video games.
@mmlrc6atgmailcom Thank you for the response Misty, it is almost unimaginable how much I have learned from the good people on youtube over the past year. I can't wait until I get the opportunity to spread some of this knowledge. I don't know anyone that is into prepping except the great folks on youtube. BTW I actually use Himalayan pink salt primarily.
thank you for the video - been doing ethnobotany 25 years - the poison is in the red color folks. the berries are used as a dye or an ink for ink pens - mixing with oak galls they are a stronger ink. Michael
@gayle2020 It is great...I am not sure about when you can eat it but I usually eat it when it is still young and not to hot out. But I would have to research about the certains time when you can eat it....
@mmlrc6atgmailcom yes check it because my aunt told me it was poisonous certain times of the year. I looked at her with wide eyes (after I had enjoyed it for the first time!!!) in shock. She laughed , but told me I would be alright. I am not sure what time of year it is. She is now deceased so I can't ask her. I really loved it too. We had it with eggs; with fried scallions . I wish I could find some in NY
@gayle2020 As far as I know it is always poisonus...It just gets tough...when it gets hot....We have just always got it when it is young and tender....That is why it is important to boil it a couple times...the older it is the more times you want to boil it and dispose of the water....
wild crops have really helped fill my pantry too..Lambs Quarts also grow about everywhere and tastes like spinach but not as toxic yet must be cooked and drained to use..pluck off the leaves and wash well 2,3 times then boil and drain..then you can freeze or can but due to limited space and power outages I dehydrate most of my garden/wild crops,,I just pop a handfull of dehydrated lambs quarters in hot water and it's ready in about 5 min to eat..these don't shrink like poke dose, milder flaver
@wizardangel Thank you..I have a friend that showed me lambs quarters once, and she used to eat them all the time in salad w/o cooking them....We would just pick them and eat them fresh and they were very tasty....Thank you for the info though....Wild food is great....
Another great video. You and your family sharing your knowledge is so very important. You should really think about writing small pamphlets or short booklets so people could start a library.
@MrSwiftndeadly Thanks. It was good. It is fresh, you want cut it fresh then cook it. I use cast with everything I cook. Mountainman used to cook meat in the ground before we got married. I bet it was cool in Hawaii. I have always wanted to go there. You are welcome and thanks for watching..
@LowBuckPrepper ROFL!!!! He was sooooo right! You can't beat a good one...lol....Everyone should have someone like Gus in there life...I cryed and missed him when he had to die.:-(
You should offer training classes. Allow someone to come for a day and you teach them how to live like you live. That would be great! Charge them $50 to $100 for being in your hair and having to explain stuff to them. People would come, I betcha!
@iamgodgirl Yes that would be cool. But then my children wouldn't have anything to do.lol....They think I should pay them. I am sure they would come though at least once....Thanks!
WOW that looked great!!! Also I love how well seasoned that pan was when you were cooking the poke and eggs, practically non-stick.Great video Misty and MMan!
Had Poke when I was younger. Now what is out here in WV is Ramps(wild onions)
and wild mushrooms already had one mess of mushrooms.. Husband has had the Ramps it is a smell that hangs around for days. Just wanted to share I enjoy your videos.
@msdodgeomni That is cool. I lived in WV for 2 years and the that is the mushroom capitol. I loved it there. And Black Berries. They had the biggest I have ever seen. And deer, and bear, and turkey, and all the good stuff. Oh how I miss it!!! Thank you for enjoying and watching!!!Misty
Poisonous. Do not eat raw. Boil twice. I wonder how many poor souls were on the wrong side of that learning curve. That dinner plate sure looked good.
You shoulda had Poke Salad Annie playing in the background:). I bush hogged a bunch of it today in my backyard :) Have never tried any but helped a man pick a bunch of it one day. Somebody said if ya boil it you've got to change the water several times. I've got all of Euell Gibbons books on edible plants and have eaten many wild edibles including mushrooms. Loved this video :)
@MyHollowpoint I know I whshed I had, Had it downloaded. We have ate it for years. The children have known it since they were little bitty...;-))Thank you!!
Hi Misty,
could I come a learn first hand from you.
I am not married to a "mountain man" I was raised hard and could learn to live that way again.
