By the time when Gen and the other kid worked there and started cleaning and everything... I've started to notice the problem they've left Gen's mother for quite a long time.
It would of been a smarter choice for Gen to convince his employer to play him a little bit of salary for his service so far... this way Gen could of bought the needed milk to feed Tomoko. This would of been better than waiting for so long to make 100 Yen to buy a load of milk, by this time, Tomoko died of starvation :(

For all you naysayers who said we shouldn't have dropped the bomb: the only alternative was to invade and conquer Japan, city by city. Millions would have died. The bomb was bad but better than the alternative.
I been thinking about this and it feels like all citizens of every nation are victims to a corrupt government who don't give a damn about the public. But I believe that both the government and its people should live in harmony. But that can only work out if we have the right leadership. A leader is supposed to be caring to his people so they don't end up like "this."

If anything, if everyone in this world could govern themselves, it wouldn't be this way. But there's people that take things too far and turn that utopian world into anarchy(violent non-government, NOT non government in general), or get greedy about land and power and demand more.
@LaVivaGan You need to realize that Communism is amazing in theory, but in the real world Government is necessary. Feudalism was replaced by Government because people cannot govern themselves, Hell Japan is a perfect example in history of the changes in power without a stable government with all its civil wars through time, but let me guess? there all "Dickfags" right? you have no education

@CrimsonXdef why? cause they dropped a bomb that probably saved ALL of Japan? understand this the bombs were the worst things ever created but to say they are the worst things ever done is BULLSHIT, those 2 bombs killed what half a million? how many do you think would have died if the US invaded? ALL OF THEM, the Japanese Empire was a bunch of Warlords, back then American politicians were actually good people, mostly
@vulcanofwar count against the enemy's armed forces? Instead of a civilian population why not target a military one? In the end loss of life in war is an inevitable factor. people who wish to live whatever is left of their life in peace should be respected and left out of it.
@vulcanofwar What happened to "honor" and respect in the battle field? Since when was it necessary to attack non combatants to win a war? Even if they are the enemy nation. Humans don't fight themselves in war... They fight their ideals. Look at 9/11 for example, was the sacrifice of all that life necessary? What did the terrorist accomplish? Other than to be labeled cowards. The sacrifice of life in the war in japan was inevitable, we knew this... So why not take the fight and make the loses c
@vulcanofwar Well, friend unfortunately I don't share your views of warfare. You see in a way war is a form of art, in which all combatants are aware of risks and loses implicated. Now notice I use the word COMBATANTS that means the armed forces of such nations that decide to engage in the act if war. Now watch this movie again and tell me how were these people supposed to defend themselves from an armed threat? That is why nuclear arms are the LOWEST form of weapons reserved for cowards!
As much as I understand the necessity of the atom bombs, it does not stop me feeling awful it ever had to happen. I sincerely hope that it never happens again.
@LockheartEnterprise u do realize the americans helped afterwards so that they can rebuild, yea it sucks it happened really bad but tho i feel stupid 2 say this im sure they didnt plan 4 it 2 b this bad... they should of tested more
@LockheartEnterprise You're overreacting. We didn't really have a choice. Japan wasn't going to give up and they just said that directly too. Even after the First Atomic they wouldn't give up. If you're were smart enough to realize that then you would understand.
Wow some of these comments are so stupid.. America cruel?... Crying?... Really??? R u high? Japan stabbed our backs without saying so we took out the knife n stabbed them and they wanted more so bam there ya go 2 atom bombs on a silver fucking platter you fucking dumb asses... Im not racist but japan was so ignorant in WWII
This is a great anime, very heart-warming and touching, as well as depressing. It really shows you that real human nature will never die, and that there are positive AND negative portions of it.
holy shit this made me cry so much, ive cryed over anime but this by far made me so depressed. i hate when in wars inocent people die, its always happened but still.... so fucked up :(
And pearl harbor was a kid getting hurt on a playground compared to this. The pearl harbor militants knew the dangers, and knew their fate. Next to none civilians died in pearl harbor.
you know 911 right? Remember the terror and damage that caused? Think of Hiroshima, the people who wanted peace, were murderd. Imagin one day you woke up to hear ur loved ones screaming as they are burned in there skins, and looking out the window to see dead and burning- live and dying people in the street, and blood flowing in roads, and, thinking the terror is over, you feel an unstopable pain of radation sickness, making your life a liveing hell. 100000 people died there in pain.
WOW... I think this is the first time an anime has made me cry like this. Powerful, powerful stuff. I do like that this movie isn't anti-American but places the blame for this tragedy where it belongs - on BOTH sides.
Couldn't those people leave the ruins and go somewhere far away, like the third island of Japan? I mean, there's plenty of Japan that wasn't bombed. Couldn't they go to those places instead of hanging around the ruins?
Just a few facts about the American casualties if there was an invasion of Japan. Generals Marshall and MacArthur estimated the total number of casualties as 31,000 to 65,000. The maximum estimated number of deaths at this point was 46,000. This is ten-folds less than the common belief.
@Mr28091995 I wouldn't say that. American's invent everything. Without them the world would be very different, and likely, a lot worse than it is. Do you expect China to fight against the Islamic Terrorist forces?
And before you ask and point fingers, I'm not American.
@andyhuyga i agree becaouse the world war migthve likely happened and hitler would suceed and russians WE SAVED YOUR ASS so dont bitch at us that we suck
@13Psycho13 powdered milk is only dehydrated milk. all you need to do is add a little water and mix it and you have milk.i think what happened was some toxin went in it or something.
Look, every country has its own evil, no one better than each other. America had no choice, they wanted to end the war. Each sin has its consequences.
This does not help. I understand how you dislike the United States for bombing Japan, if nothing stupid happened, nothing intelligent would be done about it.
@Y2Jericho96 if we hadn't nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and chose to invade Japan, MILLIONS would have died, and even innocent families would've been slaughtered by allied and Japanese troops, also they were teaching your "innocent" families how to kill people you know? And it was Japan's stubborn government that provoked us to drop the bomb. Now let's see, would you rather have millions die? Or around 100,000? Wow, you'd rather see millions die? nice logical choice jackass.
@Hperman09 Why does everyone repeat this? It's bullcrap. You repeat everything your government tells you? Then answer me now, why couldn't our super intelligent and moral government drop a few bombs on military outposts or where the emperor was living? Wouldn't that make sense? Take out the people we're fighting against, not innocent preschoolers.
@dragonofthedarknight It was total war(look that up) at that time because civialins often help the government. not like low-intensity war like iraq and Vietnam. Hiroshima housed 44000 army troops. Japanese industrial cities was intertwined in the civilian populations: Always. There were very few "square miles" of industrial space. At first, no one believed that 1 bomb could destroy a city. Not even Truman or US bommber pilots. No one also had any idea of radiation danger and its effects.
@Hperman09 So, they didn't test them before they used them!? What? Okay I've no faith in the government. I'm going to go live in a fricken hut in the forest. There were troops in Hiroshima? Meh, that makes it better... but still, they could have found a better spot. Why not bomb a rural area of Japan to show the Japanese what it can do, and then if they dont give up, drop it on some military training ground? I just refuse to believe that they couldnt do a better job at this.
@dragonofthedarknight In August 1st through 4th, we did tell the Japanese people by dropping leaflets over Hiroshima and Nagasaki to get the hell out of there. We also tell the exact date the A-bombs was going to be dropped. But most of them chose to stay to help the war-effort. Only Half of them left. It was also known that Japanese leaders armed their civilians(men, women, kids) to fight. Kill and trained to be like one make them soldiers-military targets as part of GC. It's fact.
@Hperman09 Okay, I retract my statement then. I didn't know that. Stupid Japanese gov't and honor. I'm just too confused on this matter now. I don't know where I stand anymore, sigh.
@dragonofthedarknight So in a sense, the nuke on two cities also destroyed the industrial ports easily and crippled the Japanese war-machine. This was the most humane solution and at the same time it wasn't used again afterwards. Although it's a tragic that these people died, it did save lives in a long run and ended all war in other fronts. Have you noticed today Japanese government has not apologized for their war crimes? ask any Asian who lived during those times and they will explain to u.
@Hperman09 I dont know any asians who lived during those times. Russia didn't apologize for its war crimes against my country either, (at least I dont think so) and USA didn't apologize what it did to us either, so Japan, welcome to the club :\
@dragonofthedarknight not to say civilians chose to go to war(i explain later), There are also Japanese ILLEGAL poison gas factories in Nagasaki too and those are against the Geneva convention. They are also use their Allied POWs, Japanese civlians, Vietnamese, and Chinese people there as part of Unit 731. They are also military industrial ports that supplied goods and air-planes. Read the book ""The Wages of Guilt" by Ian Buruma and he explain why it was necessary to nukes these cities.

@dragonofthedarknight We don't have smart bombs back then and it's hard to avoid killing civilians. Same goes for allies too. Not to say civilians chose to go to war. There are also Japanese ILLEGAL poison gas factories in Nagasaki too and those are against the Geneva convention. They are also use Allied POWs, their own people, Vietnamese, and Chinese there as part of Unit 731. Read the book ""The Wages of Guilt" by Ian Buruma and he explain why it was necessary to nukes these cities.
@Hperman09 I'll check that book out, but I still hold the firm belief that they could have done a better job at this. And the government of Japan is at fault too. Didn't they see the airplanes coming? Didn't they get the warnings? I'm not saying they should have gave up (they wouldnt) but couldnt they tell the people and evacuate them? or at least the children? I'm not blaming the US, I'm blaming the idiots who decided to drop the bomb and the idiots who ignored it.
@dragonofthedarknight First I was against the nukes we all know that but if you lived during that time in WW2 as a commander in chief, there was 4 options you would have chose.
@dragonofthedarknight 1- Explode a nuke on island for Japanese to witness? Japanese officer and civilians would probably belief the explosion was staged.
2-Blockade Japan? A. The allies ain't inhumane, and it would take far too long to work.
3- Operation downfall? It would cost millions of lives from both sides.
4. In real life, after 2 bomb on two industrial cities Japan had to be informed no.3 was on the way. Even after surrender some officers staged a coup to keep on fighting.
@dragonofthedarknight t 1- Explode a nuke on island for Japanese to witness? Japan as a whole would probably belief the explosion was staged.
2- Starve/Blockade Japan? A. not an option. The allies ain't inhumane, and it would take far too long to work.
3- Operation downfall? It would cost millions of lives from both sides.
4. After 2 bomb on two industrial cities Japan had to be informed no.3 was on the way. Even after surrender some officers staged a coup to keep on fighting.
The 1st was a demonstration: A. Problem is Japanese Officers and Civilians would have a belief the explosion was staged. The 2nd was operation downfall: A. Based on the casualties in Okinawa and Iwo Jima, the death toll would be far greater than that. The 3rd was blockade japan: A. Millions of civilians would starve to death and it would take too long to work. 4. In real life after 2 bombs japan was informed the no.3 was on it way. Even that some officer stated a coup to keep on fighting.
@t3subde Tokyo was bombed many times throughout the periods of 1944-1945. The biggest blow was in March 10 1945 where 34 B-29s dropping 30,000 incendiaries bombs, killing 250,000(that is 5 times FAR worse than two nukes combined) so why the hell you need to drop a nuke there when it's already destroyed?
if i had gone through that, i could never have as good an attitude as gen. he's really inspiring. this movie is heartbreaking and depressing but it's also very encouraging. of course, let's just hope and pray this kind of war voilence stops...
i think Tomoko should come back to life... The tears of Gen should have dripped onto her face and she would have drunk those tears and come back to life 0_o though thats a little gross...

you know 911 right? Remember the terror and damage that caused? Think of Hiroshima, the people who wanted peace, were murderd. Imagin one day you woke up to hear ur loved ones screaming as they are burned in there skins, and looking out the window to see dead and burning- live and dying people in the street, and blood flowing in roads, and, thinking the terror is over, you feel an unstopable pain of radation sickness, making your life a liveing hell. 100000 people died there in pain.

Hitler. He started it with hatred, and it stirred up violence and cruelty in all of humanity.

Just a few facts about the American casualties if there was an invasion of Japan. Generals Marshall and MacArthur estimated the total number of casualties as 31,000 to 65,000. The maximum estimated number of deaths at this point was 46,000. This is ten-folds less than the common belief.

This does not help. I understand how you dislike the United States for bombing Japan, if nothing stupid happened, nothing intelligent would be done about it.
spoonmonkey14 1 year ago
@Y2Jericho96 if we hadn't nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and chose to invade Japan, MILLIONS would have died, and even innocent families would've been slaughtered by allied and Japanese troops, also they were teaching your "innocent" families how to kill people you know? And it was Japan's stubborn government that provoked us to drop the bomb. Now let's see, would you rather have millions die? Or around 100,000? Wow, you'd rather see millions die? nice logical choice jackass.
Hperman09 1 year ago
@Hperman09 Why does everyone repeat this? It's bullcrap. You repeat everything your government tells you? Then answer me now, why couldn't our super intelligent and moral government drop a few bombs on military outposts or where the emperor was living? Wouldn't that make sense? Take out the people we're fighting against, not innocent preschoolers.
dragonofthedarknight 1 year ago
@dragonofthedarknight It was total war(look that up) at that time because civialins often help the government. not like low-intensity war like iraq and Vietnam. Hiroshima housed 44000 army troops. Japanese industrial cities was intertwined in the civilian populations: Always. There were very few "square miles" of industrial space. At first, no one believed that 1 bomb could destroy a city. Not even Truman or US bommber pilots. No one also had any idea of radiation danger and its effects.
Hperman09 1 year ago
@Hperman09 So, they didn't test them before they used them!? What? Okay I've no faith in the government. I'm going to go live in a fricken hut in the forest. There were troops in Hiroshima? Meh, that makes it better... but still, they could have found a better spot. Why not bomb a rural area of Japan to show the Japanese what it can do, and then if they dont give up, drop it on some military training ground? I just refuse to believe that they couldnt do a better job at this.
dragonofthedarknight 1 year ago
@dragonofthedarknight In August 1st through 4th, we did tell the Japanese people by dropping leaflets over Hiroshima and Nagasaki to get the hell out of there. We also tell the exact date the A-bombs was going to be dropped. But most of them chose to stay to help the war-effort. Only Half of them left. It was also known that Japanese leaders armed their civilians(men, women, kids) to fight. Kill and trained to be like one make them soldiers-military targets as part of GC. It's fact.
Hperman09 1 year ago
@Hperman09 Okay, I retract my statement then. I didn't know that. Stupid Japanese gov't and honor. I'm just too confused on this matter now. I don't know where I stand anymore, sigh.
dragonofthedarknight 1 year ago
@dragonofthedarknight So in a sense, the nuke on two cities also destroyed the industrial ports easily and crippled the Japanese war-machine. This was the most humane solution and at the same time it wasn't used again afterwards. Although it's a tragic that these people died, it did save lives in a long run and ended all war in other fronts. Have you noticed today Japanese government has not apologized for their war crimes? ask any Asian who lived during those times and they will explain to u.
Hperman09 1 year ago

Hperman09 1 year ago
@Hperman09 I'll check that book out, but I still hold the firm belief that they could have done a better job at this. And the government of Japan is at fault too. Didn't they see the airplanes coming? Didn't they get the warnings? I'm not saying they should have gave up (they wouldnt) but couldnt they tell the people and evacuate them? or at least the children? I'm not blaming the US, I'm blaming the idiots who decided to drop the bomb and the idiots who ignored it.
dragonofthedarknight 1 year ago
@dragonofthedarknight First I was against the nukes we all know that but if you lived during that time in WW2 as a commander in chief, there was 4 options you would have chose.
Hperman09 1 year ago 20
This has been flagged as spam show
@dragonofthedarknight 1- Explode a nuke on island for Japanese to witness?

Hperman09 1 year ago
