@rajatsolanki007 You're not giving me enough information to properly tell you exactly why it's not working. There could be many reasons why and it depends on many factors such as what kind of discs you're using, the type of drive you are using to burn them, the quality of the ISO you made from the original disc, the condition of the laser in your PS2, ect... Many of those questions I know you can't answer so all I can suggest is that you try new things or even try making a new copy.
@rajatsolanki007 Calm down I had other things I was doing yesterday and didn't have time to test the game out. I said I would get back to you once I tested the game and I will. Please be patient. Although...what region of the game did you download?
@rajatsolanki007 I tested it out on my console and it works perfectly. Although I am using a USA game on a USA console. You might consider checking the region of the game you made a backup of. If the game you got doesn't match the region of your console then try a copy of the game that does. If that doesn't work you might have an issue with your disc or your DVD burner.
hey haldrie i have a original ps2 game nitro cart i hv took a backup on my computer then pacthed it with esr disk pacther and installed in blank sony dvd+r i hv put the whole noobie pakage installed on my memory card then inserted the backup disk and played with esr and the colours came but the game did not load plz help me
@rajatsolanki007 I'm guessing you mean Crash Nitro Kart. I did a quick google search and found several entries mentioning problems with that game and I found a couple that said it works perfectly so I'm getting a copy to test out myself and I will let you know how/if it works on my end.
why whenever kh2 final mix comes on it takes five minutes just to load up from every screen change example after clicking on load savefile it takes maybe 3 minutes to load please tell me the problem because its slow gameplay for a fast acting game
@GamerseanX Only thing I can think of is that you have a bad copy. I've never played Final Mix so I can't really say what the real load times are suppose to be.
lol, get the memor32 savegame manager chip instead, I don't know why people love installing tiny chips into ps2 systems and memory cards which take way to long when you can just buy a memory card that you can use to plug into your PC and get a couple updates, transfer completed save games, and then just keep it plugged into your PS2 has a working method of working the same patched and burnt disk images :D
@StuartTheGamerNerd I've been meaning to get one of those to run games that ESR won't run. I'll admit it can be a pain at times but when you don't have $60 to spend on something like that and you already have to tools needed to install FMCB it is a nice alternative. One thing I will never do though is use a mod chip. I risk too much just soft modding and the last thing I need to do is damage my consoles even more by trying to solder chips on them that may or may not work and could kill it.
@Haldrie that what I ment....Memor32 is a memory card that, accoring to the youtube videos of it, can do it all...you know, tranfer savegames between PC and to the memory card, and almost be used to play burn't dvd's of the ps2 games with a litttle patching before burning...just like when burning a real DVD how you create the menu for it and all, plus I think it can enable the ps2 to be region free and play european and japanese games has well, which pretty means that does it all!
@StuartTheGamerNerd ESR uses the same patching method as the memor32 does and also will load up games from any region. FMCB was made to do the same thing the memor32 does (aside from the transfering of saves via usb but uLaunchELF lets you do that to a usb flash drive) it just lets you do it with any memory card. ESR is a seperate program but FMCB has added code to work with it so that if it detects a patched game it loads up ESR if it's installed.
I have a PAL Ps2, I have a modded ps2 using free mc boot on my ps2 memory card, and I burn my Naruto 8 in 1 game (says usa but its japanese writing and stuff when i play it), when i put it in my slim ps2 it comes in black and white, I have ESR and I patched the game and even used ntsc to pal, I don't know why the game appears in black and white :(, can anyone help?
@Miles52431 The problem is that while the the NTSC to PAL patch may have probably fixed the video size and frame rate it most likely did not fix the color encoding of the game and since your TV must not support that format. I have read that a lot of PAL TVs do support NTSC so you might have to look for a new TV that says it has PAL60 support which I think also supports NTSC video signals.
@kfdjslkjfsdffsklfjds Links to some of the web sites I've mentioned in this video can be found in the description of one of my newer videos titled "Free McBoot Quick Install Guide".
when i turn on the ps2 with the memory card inserted, it goes to the main sony menu....and i must restart and re-insert the memory card at least 5 times to go to the Free mc boot menu...can u help me?
@worg3 Did you format the memory card before you installed FMCB? The official forums suggest it's a good idea to format before installing to prevent problems like the one you're having. If you have any saves on it you can use uLaunchELF to copy them to your USB flash drive for safe keeping so you can format your memory card without loosing any of your saves.
@worg3 I didn't even know they made a Sony branded 32MB memory card. I do know they have an official made by Katana though. Does it say MagicGate on it? You might be better off getting an 8MB memory card just for FMCB since I think that 32MB one may be causing the problem. I'm not sure if FMCB was made to work on memory cards that size.
The comments area doesn't have enough space but USB Advance has the worst compatibility due to the usb v1.1 speeds causing FMVs to skip and stuff like that. Are you sure you want to use it?
Eh so sue my. I think I was still nervous about being on camera in this video. I've gotten a bit better since then. After watching it again I could have done a lot better and my newer videos are much more improved (at least considering my behavior on camera that is).
Cogswap is the homebrew version of Swap Magic. The way it works is you load it up and put a real PS2 game that has the same size or larger then the burned game you are wanting to load and once it's detected you force the tray out (or jam 3 sensors if you have a slim PS2) and put in the burned game so the PS2 does not know you swapped discs. After that let it spin up a bit then press X to load the game. ESR simply sees a patched game and loads it without you having to swap.
An ESR patched game looks like a DVD-Video disc to the PS2 since only the UDF file system is modified so it is able to bypass the checks that are done with a real PS2 game disc. The ISO file system remains the same so all the game data can still be found and read by the ESR program and by the game itself.
Can you tell me how much time does it take for ps2 to start, when you press power on (if tray is empty)? I have very old ps2 (V4,bios ver1.5),and it boots almost 1 minute. I don't know if it's normal, but it seems too long. My fmc is configured to boot to ps2 menu (no autostarting apps).
The reason it takes so long is because the PS2 is loading the code from the memory card into it's memory before it loads it (and the memory card's load time isn't that fast, hence why some saves take a while to be created) so yes that long load time is normal. I think the load time was reduced a bit in the latest version of FMCB provided you aren't running that latest version already.
Thanks.I know MC isn't that fast, but i thought it's longer than it should be.And no one mentions in videos how long does it take to load. That's why i thought that.Cheers :-)
Oh yeah I use ImgBurn and burn on Memorex DVD+Rs at 4x speed. I'm scratching my head right now wondering why I haven't replied to this comment yet. Anyway I've also heard that some people have been using DVD-Rs at 8x but that seems to be a PS2 to PS2 difference on whether or not certain discs work on them. Other disc brands to try as well would be Sony, Verbatium and possible TDK. Most of the others aren't very reliable even for standard use from what I've been seeing.
hay i need help i have ESR and i have a game patched with ESR its kingdom hearts 2 final mix what i do is i put my game in my ps2 close it turn it off and then turn it back on i go to ESR and then all it does is not read it wont do anything it will just make skipping sounds and then not load i have it patched with ESR and it has no scratches its a dvd-r disk what am i doing wrong can anyone help me?
anyway, do you have any experience with swapmagic and if so which is a quicker load, esr or swapping with swapmagic? i have tried both methods before and both seem rather slow.
If you are using the latest version of FMCB with ESR then ESR is definitely the fastest method since all you have to do is put the burned disc in just like you would with the real disc. The load time is going to be a bit slower then the real disc but definitely faster and safer then using swapmagic although not all games work with ESR so it doesn't hurt to have swapmagic to use for those rare cases.
Not every game is going to work. You might want to check out some of the ESR compatibility lists that several people have made. I have a few games myself that either don't run or have other issues such as saving or crashing shortly after starting the game. I usually just use cogswap for those few games.
I have a video titled Free McBoot Quick Install Guide which give a quick explanation of how to install this. You have to already be able to run homebrew on your PS2 as the installer is homebrew and won't just boot off of the USB flash drive as most people seem to think is happening in that video.
You just used 2 already existing programs, put them together like the tutorials tell you to on skapps, and named it FreeVast... you havent really actually made anything....
I call it FreeVast because that's what everyone else is calling it (including the developers on the official forums). Also I never said that I was the one that made this I'm just showing it off. This video is also about a year old now so you might consider checking out my more recent videos regarding this.
You have to have a way of running homebrew on your PS2 in order to load up the installer and install it to the memory card. I made the Independence Exploit videos showing one way of doing it but I have 2 other videos that I've had planned for some time (just not much time lately to work on them).
Do you need a swapmagic disk to run the usb stick on your ps2 ? Because i couldn't get it to work, and it was FAT32 and everything .. I put all the mcboot files there, I downloaded the noobie pack so the files were already there I just had to put them onto the mem stick... whats wrong?
You cannot run programs directly from a usb flash drive. In order to boot the installer from a usb flash drive you will have to perform some kind of exploit on your PS2 to get uLaunchELF loaded and then run the installer from that. If you have a fat PS2 I have videos showing you how to install the Independence Exploit here on my channel but if you have a slim then you will need either Swap Magic 3.6 or 3.8 or a copy of an Action Replay MAX that has the media player in it.
Yes you can use either the ESR Disc Patcher or the Momento Disc Patcher to patch the games. The official forum page where you can download ESR also has links to download the patcher and a link to that page is in the video description of my Free McBoot Quick Install Guide video.
So basically you still have to load it onto the memory card by yourself...?
I could do that seeing as I have 5 ps2s(god forbid) but what about the people who only have one and cant put it on without modding their ps2 like a crazy person, so full of joy with their hopes up high, then realize it didn't work and vow to destroy all life on earth because their lives suck hard..?
Well to be honest if a person has a mod chip they have guaranteed that they won't be able to use let alone install FMCB using that PS2. As long as a person is willing to buy they right disc(s) to exploit their PS2 the rest is pretty easy. It just seems that people don't want to spend $30 even though they've already spent $200 or more on games for their PS2 or even more on one or more of these newer consoles.
I don't wanna buy one because of the soldering, I was never any good at it, but I do want one, however, its pretty pointless as I rarely use it enough, and the fact that I'm aiming for a xbox 360 and a tonne of games for that... hehe..
I would be careful modding the 360. If not done right you could be banned from xbox live or worse you could red ring your 360. I'll admit a lot of people have modded their 360s with no problem but modding it is no easy task especially when you consider how easy it is to install FMCB. If you can get a copy of Swap Magic 3.6 or 3.8 or (if you have a fat PS2) any cheat disc that lets you transfer saves to and from a usb flash drive then you can install FMCB.
I don't think the PS2 nativity supports accessing the usb ports from the browser (at least not to my knowledge) so unless this thing has a disc for the PS2 I don't think it's going to work (which really makes me wonder why it's being advertised for the PS2 if there isn't a disc). Also if I'm not mistaken this is the same thing that comes with my copy of the ARMAX and all it is is a standard USB flash drive (which is only accessed using the AR or homebrew).
Yes ESR patched games will still work with swap magic and cogswap and other stuff like that. If the drive on your PS2 is giving out on you I know of a web site where you can buy replacement parts for it. If you want the URL just PM me.
Hey Haldrie I got another few questions for you. First of all, do you notice any...blurryish type screen when playing Burned games? Because I do, its much clearer playing normal copies, and when playing burned copies it looks a bit fuzzy, any way to fix it? Also whats the difference between ESR DVD Direct and non-direct?
Well I can't really say anything about what you're seeing as I've never seen it myself but as far as the difference in the ESR versions the non-direct version unloads itself from the IOP allowing a small number of games that won't work on the direct version to then run.
Tried on my PS2, think it's V14, and works! thing that sux is that I have a LOT of backups, and u have to patch them!, I do have SwapMAgic! 3.6 will stick to that! tried on a friends V18 and didn't work! :-(
Last question for your Haldrie. I read on some forums about using different burning speeds may reduce the lifetime of your PS2's disc reader. Do you recommend any speed of burning? And have you had any issues since you've started playing games which have been burned?
Best practices is to burn at the slowest speed your drive and the discs you use support. I burn all of my discs at 4x whenever possible. So far the only issue I've had is with double layer burns. I have also found out very recently that ESR patched games that are burned with my laptop's internal DVD burner tend to run better then ones that are burned using my external DVD burner so in that case if you run in to any problems with skipping FMVs or long load times try using a different burner.
Oh and as far as the double layer burns go the issue can vary from either a bad burn to a bad laser in the PS2 which was the case with my slim PS2 when I first got it before I got a new laser for it after burning out the one that it came with while trying to recalibrate it to read one of my double layer burns.
any backup should be burned at 4X and try to put it on a DVD-R (but i have heard some have been able to use DVD+R), as burning at a high speed can make data unreadable by the PS2 (found this out through trial and error. the speed that a disc is burned on will not affect the lifetime of the laser of the device reading the disc. it would mean that would apply to ANY disc and any player, besides the PS2 (including a DVD player or XBOX).
I need some help man, I did VCS (Vice City Stories), patched it using the ESR Disc Patcher, then burned it. Then I started the console without a disk, went to uLaunchElf, and inserted the disk, then I ran ESR Direct DVD, and the logo came up, and then it went to a blank black screen and stayed there. Any help? :S
You aren't giving me a whole lot to work with. Best I can say is that it's either the brand/type of disc you used or the way you burned it. Also if you add the dvdv direct version of ESR (or even better you can use the beta GUI version which is what I use now) to the INSTALL folder on the FMCB Installer and name it ESR.ELF it will install it as a menu option and auto load it when you insert an ESR patched disc so you don't have to load ESR from uLaunchELF every time.
Thanks for the tip Haldrie. It must have been the game, I also tried .Hack//G.U Vol.1 Rebirth, and it worked fine with no issues. So it just must have been that specific one that had issues. I will also look into this feature, it seems like it would be alot faster and less time consuming. Thanks.
Most of the ones I've tried work well but there are quite a few that don't work. You can do a google search for ESR Compatiblity List and find several sites that are trying to put together their own list but personally I like to just try it myself to be sure because you never know if maybe the person that submitted info on a certain game really did everything correctly or not. I would post a list of games that I have burned that don't work but I don't have enough room here.
No progressive scan has nothing to do with that. NTSC and PAL video signals are completely different. Most European TVs can support both both video formats as well as some in the US although they aren't advertised in the US as having that support. If your TV doesn't support PAL then when you give it a PAL signal it won't have any color and, if you have an old CRT TV, the screen will bounce up and down a lot (personal experience, I've never had a TV that supports PAL). Most US TVs are NTSC only.
Yes but if you have a NTSC TV then chances are it won't look right on your TV unless your TV is capable of displaying PAL video content. There are ways to patch PAL to NTSC but it's a bit complicated and it doesn't always work right.
You have to first patch the ISO with the ESR Disc Patcher and then burn it to a high quality DVD at 4x speed. Sony, Verbatim and Memorex are all good brands. I myself use Memorex DVD+Rs and burn the images using a program called ImgBurn. Also, if you want to burn double layer games you have to patch the image with the Toxic DL Patcher first and then patch it with the ESR Disc Patcher.
It's not really that easy to install this. You first have to already be able to run homebrew, then you run the installer that creates special files and encrypts them on the memory card using the memory card's built-in MagicGate encryption so the PS2 thinks it's loading an update when in reality it's loading the FMCB software.
can i do the independence with the use of a cheat device like AR max or gameshark? lets say i make a trigger disc, use that to launch ulaunchelf and use ulaunchelf to read from my memorex flash drive and run free mcboot from there. would that work?
Any cheat device that lets you transfer saves to and from your memory card to a USB flash drive will work for installing the Independence Exploit and the trigger disc must be an original PSX disc (no burned copies or PSX cheat discs will work). The method for loading the FMCB Installer is the exact reason why I show how to do that exploit and load uLaunchELF in the first place so yes you can do it that way.
Great video. I was just wondering, i had Mcboot running with my old ps2 (30001) however the laser wasn't reading games so i gave my cousins a shot (30001R) and i've noticed free mcboot won't autoload on that system. Any ideas what's happening? Even holding down any of the trigger buttons won't load it.
Chances are you used the Normal Install which only works on the PS2 you installed it on (and any other PS2 that is the same model). Reinstall FMCB using Multi Install and it will work on all PS2s in your region. I have actually seen inside both of those model PS2s and although they are similar model numbers the hardware inside them (and the bios most likely) are completely different.
If you are talking about the new silver and white slims then to my knowledge FMCB will never work because Sony removed a feature from the bios that FMCB was exploiting to run. Your best bet is to get an older PS2 that FMCB will work on. Also I am not one of the people working on FMCB so I don't know anything about it's development other then what I read about in forums and other sources.
I have videos that I've been putting off that are intended to tell you how to install it in the easiest way I know possible. The only hard part is booting the installer which is what the videos like the Independence Exploit are intended to help with that little problem but even then it might not be possible for some people to do. Just be patient and I will try to get these videos done as soon as I can but don't hold your breath as it's been month in the making already and I have no set schedule.
Hey I have a question that I can't seem to find any help elsewhere. My PS2 was working fine with the ESR patching and stuff, and was able to play the backups. But all of sudden I stopped being able to play the backups. The Free McBoot loads up, but does not immediately load the backup anymore. No more colors and sometimes it even says "unable to read disc" in white letters. Can you help me out?
It sounds to me like your PS2s laser is either dead or dying or it just needs to be cleaned. If cleaning the laser doesn't work then your only other option is the either replace the laser or get a new PS2.
Go to my channel and click "Send Message" although I guess this is good enough. I'll PM you with a link to the patch and the program you need to apply it to the image. Just be sure to keep the original image as backup just in case.
In order to use a burned copy of any dual layer game on any PS2 (even one with a mod chip unless it's the toxic mod chip) you will have to get the Toxic DL Patcher (you can find it on sksapps). When running it with ESR you have to patch the image with the DL Patcher first and then patch it with the ESR Patcher. Also there is a patch to fix the corrupted dump that is floating around the net. If the CRC-32 hash of your image isn't 6806BE67 (you can use hashcalc to find it) PM me for the patch.
That's being a bit too general. I can't exactly help you without knowing what it is you need help with. I have made several videos regarding this so you might start by checking those out and seeing if they answer your questions.
I just installed fmcb last night on my phat. But, I think I'm going the hdd route instead. Now, my nephew on the other hand, the esr method should work great for him.
i just use memento 1.2e beta on my memor32 and i dont have to arse around with any menu or anything.. loads stright to the game after shwoing the memento logo...
Hey, ive started using esr+fmcb. It works great, but im trying to use guitar hero metallica (dual layer dvd..)..Sometimes and rarely it loads...but many times it doesnt or takes many time... do u have any idea of what is happening? (on the first time ive put the dvd, it loaded very fast and was working very good..but on the other tries it took many many time..)
Yeah i did that haldrie. Ive made another copy of the game,on a 4x verbatim dvd-R DL (same as before) but now at 4x speed...At first, when my ps2 wasnt used for like 5 hours, and when i tried the game, it booted very good, but then later on i had to reboot the ps2 and the game wouldnt boot...Its weird seems like the ps2 after some time stops reading it
hay can u help me? i cant save grand def auto sanandreas cuz its sez *prohabitited oy corruped*... it want let me delete it so can some 1 help me plz?
I have no idea what you are talking about nor do I see any relation to this video at all. Please rephrase your question with some more details and I might be able to help you.
You can use any PS2 memory card that supports magicgate which they usually say on them if they do. FMCB can take up between 2-4MB of space depending on what you add to the installation. It's a good idea to backup your saves to a USB flash drive first and format the memory card to ensure that everything runs smoothly then copy your saves back to it when you get FMCB installed.
How do I back-up the saves to a flash drive? Already got mcboot installed with no problems but I can't help but feel worried about the mem card getting corrupted sooner or later.
Load uLaunchELF and go to the File Browser. mc0 is slot 1, mc1 is slot 2 and mass is the usb flash drive. Simply go to your memory card can copy and paste the saves to the USB flash drive. To put them back on the memory card just do the same thing in reverse.
well , instead of writing them on a cd , i patched the .iso with the esr patcher , and i used alcohol 120% to burn them to a dvd ... it worked ( at least "Fire Pro Wrestling Returns" works :P , dont know for any others :-?? )
Although a PAL PS2 will reject all NTSC games you throw at it ESR does not care about region and will boot it no matter what. The only question is will your TV be able to support the video signal that the game will output. From what I've read most newer PAL TVs have dual format support and should be able to handle a NTSC signal no problem so if your TV is fairly new you shouldn't have any problem there but if it doesn't work then you will have to convert it to PAL which is not easy.
At the moment ESR does not fully support CD based games. Chances are that the disc you are trying to patch does not have a UDF flie system (all PS2 DVD based games have an ISO and UDF files system and it is the UDF that is patched since that is the one the PS2 looks at for DVD video discs) and that is why you are getting that message. The only way people have been getting CD based games to work is by converting them to DVD which for some games is not easy.
It works great unless you are unfortunate enough to own one of the new white or silver model slims as those models removed the feature that this takes advantage of.
The momento patcher and the ESR disc patcher do the same thing so that should have worked. The only reason it won't work is if you are not loading ESR or if you are loading the wrong version of it. Try using the esr dvdv direct.elf version and see if that works.
where do i go to download this mc boot and esr ?

@Haldrie that what I ment....Memor32 is a memory card that, accoring to the youtube videos of it, can do it all...you know, tranfer savegames between PC and to the memory card, and almost be used to play burn't dvd's of the ps2 games with a litttle patching before burning...just like when burning a real DVD how you create the menu for it and all, plus I think it can enable the ps2 to be region free and play european and japanese games has well, which pretty means that does it all!
StuartTheGamerNerd 1 year ago

Miles52431 1 year ago
@Miles52431 The problem is that while the the NTSC to PAL patch may have probably fixed the video size and frame rate it most likely did not fix the color encoding of the game and since your TV must not support that format. I have read that a lot of PAL TVs do support NTSC so you might have to look for a new TV that says it has PAL60 support which I think also supports NTSC video signals.

worg3 1 year ago
@worg3 Did you format the memory card before you installed FMCB? The official forums suggest it's a good idea to format before installing to prevent problems like the one you're having. If you have any saves on it you can use uLaunchELF to copy them to your USB flash drive for safe keeping so you can format your memory card without loosing any of your saves.

@Haldrie yes =( i format that 2 times =(

Whats the diffrence between Cogswap and ESR? which one is better?
Evilduckful 2 years ago
Cogswap is the homebrew version of Swap Magic. The way it works is you load it up and put a real PS2 game that has the same size or larger then the burned game you are wanting to load and once it's detected you force the tray out (or jam 3 sensors if you have a slim PS2) and put in the burned game so the PS2 does not know you swapped discs. After that let it spin up a bit then press X to load the game. ESR simply sees a patched game and loads it without you having to swap.
Haldrie 2 years ago
An ESR patched game looks like a DVD-Video disc to the PS2 since only the UDF file system is modified so it is able to bypass the checks that are done with a real PS2 game disc. The ISO file system remains the same so all the game data can still be found and read by the ESR program and by the game itself.
Haldrie 2 years ago
Can you tell me how much time does it take for ps2 to start, when you press power on (if tray is empty)? I have very old ps2 (V4,bios ver1.5),and it boots almost 1 minute. I don't know if it's normal, but it seems too long. My fmc is configured to boot to ps2 menu (no autostarting apps).
bujooo 2 years ago
The reason it takes so long is because the PS2 is loading the code from the memory card into it's memory before it loads it (and the memory card's load time isn't that fast, hence why some saves take a while to be created) so yes that long load time is normal. I think the load time was reduced a bit in the latest version of FMCB provided you aren't running that latest version already.
Haldrie 2 years ago
Thanks.I know MC isn't that fast, but i thought it's longer than it should be.And no one mentions in videos how long does it take to load. That's why i thought that.Cheers :-)

Hello again, With what burning program you burn your PS2 Games ??
dovyduosius 2 years ago
@dovyduosius Most people use ImgBurn. It's completely free, easy to use, and works.
comp1337n00b 2 years ago

Digmaster945 2 years ago
very informative
anyway, do you have any experience with swapmagic and if so which is a quicker load, esr or swapping with swapmagic? i have tried both methods before and both seem rather slow.
thanks in advance
ZackWeeden 2 years ago
If you are using the latest version of FMCB with ESR then ESR is definitely the fastest method since all you have to do is put the burned disc in just like you would with the real disc. The load time is going to be a bit slower then the real disc but definitely faster and safer then using swapmagic although not all games work with ESR so it doesn't hurt to have swapmagic to use for those rare cases.

Not every game is going to work. You might want to check out some of the ESR compatibility lists that several people have made. I have a few games myself that either don't run or have other issues such as saving or crashing shortly after starting the game. I usually just use cogswap for those few games.

can you tell me how to install free mc boot
Elite079 2 years ago
I have a video titled Free McBoot Quick Install Guide which give a quick explanation of how to install this. You have to already be able to run homebrew on your PS2 as the installer is homebrew and won't just boot off of the USB flash drive as most people seem to think is happening in that video.
Haldrie 2 years ago
can you send me a list on what mcboot is used for
yousef4817 2 years ago
You just used 2 already existing programs, put them together like the tutorials tell you to on skapps, and named it FreeVast... you havent really actually made anything....
gbwilding 2 years ago
I call it FreeVast because that's what everyone else is calling it (including the developers on the official forums). Also I never said that I was the one that made this I'm just showing it off. This video is also about a year old now so you might consider checking out my more recent videos regarding this.
Haldrie 2 years ago
how do you put those apps in the mem card? please respond, thanks a lot
almightyethrion 2 years ago
You have to have a way of running homebrew on your PS2 in order to load up the installer and install it to the memory card. I made the Independence Exploit videos showing one way of doing it but I have 2 other videos that I've had planned for some time (just not much time lately to work on them).
Haldrie 2 years ago
Do you need a swapmagic disk to run the usb stick on your ps2 ? Because i couldn't get it to work, and it was FAT32 and everything .. I put all the mcboot files there, I downloaded the noobie pack so the files were already there I just had to put them onto the mem stick... whats wrong?
Tannubatista1 2 years ago
You cannot run programs directly from a usb flash drive. In order to boot the installer from a usb flash drive you will have to perform some kind of exploit on your PS2 to get uLaunchELF loaded and then run the installer from that. If you have a fat PS2 I have videos showing you how to install the Independence Exploit here on my channel but if you have a slim then you will need either Swap Magic 3.6 or 3.8 or a copy of an Action Replay MAX that has the media player in it.
Haldrie 2 years ago
How are you supposed to patch the games? I found an aplication called " ESR Disc patcher " .. does it work?
Tannubatista1 2 years ago
Yes you can use either the ESR Disc Patcher or the Momento Disc Patcher to patch the games. The official forum page where you can download ESR also has links to download the patcher and a link to that page is in the video description of my Free McBoot Quick Install Guide video.

Tannubatista1 2 years ago
So basically you still have to load it onto the memory card by yourself...?
I could do that seeing as I have 5 ps2s(god forbid) but what about the people who only have one and cant put it on without modding their ps2 like a crazy person, so full of joy with their hopes up high, then realize it didn't work and vow to destroy all life on earth because their lives suck hard..?
FrostsCreations 2 years ago
Well to be honest if a person has a mod chip they have guaranteed that they won't be able to use let alone install FMCB using that PS2. As long as a person is willing to buy they right disc(s) to exploit their PS2 the rest is pretty easy. It just seems that people don't want to spend $30 even though they've already spent $200 or more on games for their PS2 or even more on one or more of these newer consoles.
Haldrie 2 years ago
I don't wanna buy one because of the soldering, I was never any good at it, but I do want one, however, its pretty pointless as I rarely use it enough, and the fact that I'm aiming for a xbox 360 and a tonne of games for that... hehe..
FrostsCreations 2 years ago
I would be careful modding the 360. If not done right you could be banned from xbox live or worse you could red ring your 360. I'll admit a lot of people have modded their 360s with no problem but modding it is no easy task especially when you consider how easy it is to install FMCB. If you can get a copy of Swap Magic 3.6 or 3.8 or (if you have a fat PS2) any cheat disc that lets you transfer saves to and from a usb flash drive then you can install FMCB.
Haldrie 2 years ago
I didn't think of this before but would MaxDrive by any chance work..?
I'm gonna try it now for about an hour anyway.
FrostsCreations 2 years ago
I don't think the PS2 nativity supports accessing the usb ports from the browser (at least not to my knowledge) so unless this thing has a disc for the PS2 I don't think it's going to work (which really makes me wonder why it's being advertised for the PS2 if there isn't a disc). Also if I'm not mistaken this is the same thing that comes with my copy of the ARMAX and all it is is a standard USB flash drive (which is only accessed using the AR or homebrew).
Haldrie 2 years ago
If you ESR patch a game can you still play it using swap magic, cause i'm afraid my fat ps2 is going to die soon it's not sounding very healthy
cab1020301 2 years ago
Yes ESR patched games will still work with swap magic and cogswap and other stuff like that. If the drive on your PS2 is giving out on you I know of a web site where you can buy replacement parts for it. If you want the URL just PM me.
Haldrie 2 years ago
Well, I'll search around the internet for more information regarding the screen issue then, thanks.
JaTochNietDan 2 years ago
Hey Haldrie I got another few questions for you. First of all, do you notice any...blurryish type screen when playing Burned games? Because I do, its much clearer playing normal copies, and when playing burned copies it looks a bit fuzzy, any way to fix it? Also whats the difference between ESR DVD Direct and non-direct?
JaTochNietDan 2 years ago
Well I can't really say anything about what you're seeing as I've never seen it myself but as far as the difference in the ESR versions the non-direct version unloads itself from the IOP allowing a small number of games that won't work on the direct version to then run.
Haldrie 2 years ago
Tried on my PS2, think it's V14, and works! thing that sux is that I have a LOT of backups, and u have to patch them!, I do have SwapMAgic! 3.6 will stick to that! tried on a friends V18 and didn't work! :-(
danielmpr 2 years ago
I found out after doing some reading in the psx-scene forums that if the PS2 has bios version 2.30 or higher that FMCB won't work.
Haldrie 2 years ago
MCBoot works with the Memor32. i have it running it on mine!
daiatlus79 2 years ago
Last question for your Haldrie. I read on some forums about using different burning speeds may reduce the lifetime of your PS2's disc reader. Do you recommend any speed of burning? And have you had any issues since you've started playing games which have been burned?
JaTochNietDan 2 years ago
Best practices is to burn at the slowest speed your drive and the discs you use support. I burn all of my discs at 4x whenever possible. So far the only issue I've had is with double layer burns. I have also found out very recently that ESR patched games that are burned with my laptop's internal DVD burner tend to run better then ones that are burned using my external DVD burner so in that case if you run in to any problems with skipping FMVs or long load times try using a different burner.
Haldrie 2 years ago
Oh and as far as the double layer burns go the issue can vary from either a bad burn to a bad laser in the PS2 which was the case with my slim PS2 when I first got it before I got a new laser for it after burning out the one that it came with while trying to recalibrate it to read one of my double layer burns.
Haldrie 2 years ago
any backup should be burned at 4X and try to put it on a DVD-R (but i have heard some have been able to use DVD+R), as burning at a high speed can make data unreadable by the PS2 (found this out through trial and error. the speed that a disc is burned on will not affect the lifetime of the laser of the device reading the disc. it would mean that would apply to ANY disc and any player, besides the PS2 (including a DVD player or XBOX).
daiatlus79 2 years ago
I need some help man, I did VCS (Vice City Stories), patched it using the ESR Disc Patcher, then burned it. Then I started the console without a disk, went to uLaunchElf, and inserted the disk, then I ran ESR Direct DVD, and the logo came up, and then it went to a blank black screen and stayed there. Any help? :S
JaTochNietDan 2 years ago
You aren't giving me a whole lot to work with. Best I can say is that it's either the brand/type of disc you used or the way you burned it. Also if you add the dvdv direct version of ESR (or even better you can use the beta GUI version which is what I use now) to the INSTALL folder on the FMCB Installer and name it ESR.ELF it will install it as a menu option and auto load it when you insert an ESR patched disc so you don't have to load ESR from uLaunchELF every time.
Haldrie 2 years ago
Thanks for the tip Haldrie. It must have been the game, I also tried .Hack//G.U Vol.1 Rebirth, and it worked fine with no issues. So it just must have been that specific one that had issues. I will also look into this feature, it seems like it would be alot faster and less time consuming. Thanks.
JaTochNietDan 2 years ago
ahhh ok thanks :D
and umm
are most ps2 games including japanese games compatible with ESR??
yoonvsaechao 2 years ago
Most of the ones I've tried work well but there are quite a few that don't work. You can do a google search for ESR Compatiblity List and find several sites that are trying to put together their own list but personally I like to just try it myself to be sure because you never know if maybe the person that submitted info on a certain game really did everything correctly or not. I would post a list of games that I have burned that don't work but I don't have enough room here.
Haldrie 2 years ago
so if i have a tv with progressive scan, it will work right?
as long as it's not interlaced?
yoonvsaechao 2 years ago
No progressive scan has nothing to do with that. NTSC and PAL video signals are completely different. Most European TVs can support both both video formats as well as some in the US although they aren't advertised in the US as having that support. If your TV doesn't support PAL then when you give it a PAL signal it won't have any color and, if you have an old CRT TV, the screen will bounce up and down a lot (personal experience, I've never had a TV that supports PAL). Most US TVs are NTSC only.
Haldrie 2 years ago
heyyy ummmm
do i patch PAL games the same way as NTSU games?
yoonvsaechao 2 years ago
Yes but if you have a NTSC TV then chances are it won't look right on your TV unless your TV is capable of displaying PAL video content. There are ways to patch PAL to NTSC but it's a bit complicated and it doesn't always work right.
Haldrie 2 years ago
how do i burn games for this
jamaicansumo 2 years ago
You have to first patch the ISO with the ESR Disc Patcher and then burn it to a high quality DVD at 4x speed. Sony, Verbatim and Memorex are all good brands. I myself use Memorex DVD+Rs and burn the images using a program called ImgBurn. Also, if you want to burn double layer games you have to patch the image with the Toxic DL Patcher first and then patch it with the ESR Disc Patcher.

what files u put on memory card to boot from it
kikooo0123456 2 years ago
It's not really that easy to install this. You first have to already be able to run homebrew, then you run the installer that creates special files and encrypts them on the memory card using the memory card's built-in MagicGate encryption so the PS2 thinks it's loading an update when in reality it's loading the FMCB software.
Haldrie 2 years ago
im curious how did you get the elf launcher into the memory card? you used a cheat device like gameshark+usb? so this is not really free then right?
lucirz 2 years ago
I originally used the Independence Exploit that I recently made a 3 part video serious on to install this.
Haldrie 2 years ago
can i do the independence with the use of a cheat device like AR max or gameshark? lets say i make a trigger disc, use that to launch ulaunchelf and use ulaunchelf to read from my memorex flash drive and run free mcboot from there. would that work?
lucirz 2 years ago
Any cheat device that lets you transfer saves to and from your memory card to a USB flash drive will work for installing the Independence Exploit and the trigger disc must be an original PSX disc (no burned copies or PSX cheat discs will work). The method for loading the FMCB Installer is the exact reason why I show how to do that exploit and load uLaunchELF in the first place so yes you can do it that way.

Hi there,
Great video. I was just wondering, i had Mcboot running with my old ps2 (30001) however the laser wasn't reading games so i gave my cousins a shot (30001R) and i've noticed free mcboot won't autoload on that system. Any ideas what's happening? Even holding down any of the trigger buttons won't load it.
eienmatt 2 years ago
Chances are you used the Normal Install which only works on the PS2 you installed it on (and any other PS2 that is the same model). Reinstall FMCB using Multi Install and it will work on all PS2s in your region. I have actually seen inside both of those model PS2s and although they are similar model numbers the hardware inside them (and the bios most likely) are completely different.
Haldrie 2 years ago
Good video, i tried the free mcboot but it didnt work on my PStwo slim because it is bios version 230 you know if it will work in the future?
TimmyNL2 2 years ago
If you are talking about the new silver and white slims then to my knowledge FMCB will never work because Sony removed a feature from the bios that FMCB was exploiting to run. Your best bet is to get an older PS2 that FMCB will work on. Also I am not one of the people working on FMCB so I don't know anything about it's development other then what I read about in forums and other sources.

I have videos that I've been putting off that are intended to tell you how to install it in the easiest way I know possible. Just be patient and I will try to get these videos done as soon as I can but don't hold your breath as it's been month in the making already and I have no set schedule.

No more colors and sometimes it even says "unable to read disc" in white letters. Can you help me out?
mancalledhero 2 years ago
It sounds to me like your PS2s laser is either dead or dying or it just needs to be cleaned. If cleaning the laser doesn't work then your only other option is the either replace the laser or get a new PS2.

ive looked all over for someone to show how to play a dual layer ps2 game like guitar hero metallica do you know how??
wlightnings 2 years ago
In order to use a burned copy of any dual layer game on any PS2 (even one with a mod chip unless it's the toxic mod chip) you will have to get the Toxic DL Patcher (you can find it on sksapps). When running it with ESR you have to patch the image with the DL Patcher first and then patch it with the ESR Patcher. Also there is a patch to fix the corrupted dump that is floating around the net. If the CRC-32 hash of your image isn't 6806BE67 (you can use hashcalc to find it) PM me for the patch.

Haldrie 2 years ago
Does it need its own mem card or can I use the one I normally use?
hinro 2 years ago
You can use any PS2 memory card that supports magicgate which they usually say on them if they do. FMCB can take up between 2-4MB of space depending on what you add to the installation. It's a good idea to backup your saves to a USB flash drive first and format the memory card to ensure that everything runs smoothly then copy your saves back to it when you get FMCB installed.
Haldrie 2 years ago
How do I back-up the saves to a flash drive? Already got mcboot installed with no problems but I can't help but feel worried about the mem card getting corrupted sooner or later.
hinro 2 years ago
Load uLaunchELF and go to the File Browser. mc0 is slot 1, mc1 is slot 2 and mass is the usb flash drive. Simply go to your memory card can copy and paste the saves to the USB flash drive. To put them back on the memory card just do the same thing in reverse.

if i have ps2 pal can i run ntsc game with the mcboot?
hagaya 3 years ago
Although a PAL PS2 will reject all NTSC games you throw at it ESR does not care about region and will boot it no matter what. The only question is will your TV be able to support the video signal that the game will output. From what I've read most newer PAL TVs have dual format support and should be able to handle a NTSC signal no problem so if your TV is fairly new you shouldn't have any problem there but if it doesn't work then you will have to convert it to PAL which is not easy.

is it possible to patch cd (not dvd)game also,
i am getting an error no UDF descriptor when i try to patch cd game
hagaya 3 years ago
At the moment ESR does not fully support CD based games. Chances are that the disc you are trying to patch does not have a UDF flie system (all PS2 DVD based games have an ISO and UDF files system and it is the UDF that is patched since that is the one the PS2 looks at for DVD video discs) and that is why you are getting that message. The only way people have been getting CD based games to work is by converting them to DVD which for some games is not easy.

You can use the ESR Patcher found on the ESR download page in the video description of my Quick Install Guide.

It works great unless you are unfortunate enough to own one of the new white or silver model slims as those models removed the feature that this takes advantage of.

were did you get the patch

The patching program is on the ESR download page. A link to that page is in the description of the Quick Install Guide video.

well i used the momento patch and it didnt seem to work
airsoftmasters 3 years ago
The momento patcher and the ESR disc patcher do the same thing so that should have worked. The only reason it won't work is if you are not loading ESR or if you are loading the wrong version of it. Try using the esr dvdv direct.elf version and see if that works.

yea i tried different versions of it. and that exact one. also tried cogswap without the patch. and swapmagic 3.8
also tried rebuilding the iso
i think it has something to do with the dnas code

How are you trying to load it exactly?
