@uckushtar I am only a blue belt in this system and I have wrecked red belts of Tae Kwon Do and brown belts of muai thai. you, my friend, are hilarious.
@subliminalhyminal Hey man good for you, just so you know - traditional ranking in TKD has no red belt. Most styles that incorporate a red belt into their system are the new modern money making machines. Also to add to your post, there is no legitimate Muay Thai gym that gives out rank, your rank is your fighting record. There's no such thing as a brown belt in Muay Thai, so I'm not too sure how you "wrecked" a brown belt.
@uckushtar really? because I know that TKD has a red belt, and I been to a muai thai gym before as well, and I saw the ranking system with the belts arranged lowest to highest. probably had BJJ in it too though.
@dannyhill1971lives I have always wondered about this since if Bruce Lee were still alive they are about the same age. I'm surprised they never crossed paths in the 70's..
I am a 2nd degree black belt (from Villari's) and was taught this technique around brown belt level and it definitley works. The thing is you have to practice it...even if it were to be taught to you at the beginner level, you woudn't be able to do it until you practice. Grandmaster Villari is the REAL thing. I've seen him personally many times.
I left Villari's to pursuit other interests, but would recommend this style of fighting to anyone.
@zazenh I met him in'93 and I believe he was 55 then which would make him 73 now. Still looks in great shape for that age. I was under Jim Carusso and yeah even though I only made it to green belt brown stripe really noticed it making me a better fighter. I wish I would have stayed with it and learned the ground game like Gracie Jiu-Jitsu etc.
I live in an area with several Villari schools within driving distance. I decided to find out for myself about Villaris, so I visited 4 of these schools, all owned by different people. I found the instructors to be personable, knowledgeable and dedicated. I observed classes and talked to students and parents. The vast majority were very happy with Villaris. I watched belt tests. The students definitly earned their rank. Schools were clean and professional. Other places not so much.
@ItsNotSoVeryUnited - haha...it's funny when you post a comment and then months later are reminded of what you said, only because someone replies. i would absolutely say it to his face. it's priceless!
Fred Villari sold franchises with false documents in CT, NY, and NJ and scammed the buyers. The school I studied at closed because of it. Grandmaster? I'd say crook might be a better choice. You want your kids bowing to his picture?
@VillariHistory how dare u accuse a grandmaster like this do u have any idea how dishonorable that is? if i were to say such a thing my master would kill me. I dont care what style it is u just dont say that about any one, especially not a grandmaster.
haha professor mattera seperated from Ed Parker with Fred Villari at the same time but did not train under him. Then they kicked him out for mal-practice... Now they are U.S.S.D. and villarri has like 2 dojos...
@joe848484 Neither of them studied with Ed Parker, they studied under Nick Cerio. The two Kenpo(Parker) and Shaolin Kempo system are totally different.
@joe848484 how do you kick out someone for mal-practice in the world of martial arts? that term is part of the medical industry...and eagleset3 is right. Mattera and Villari never were under Ed Parker. Where did you learn your history? Not even your manual says Ed Parker...
Obviuosly you have never been on a platform with bright lights shining in your eyes. It is very uncomfortable. This man is not a youngster anymore but, he is an highly respected icon in the martial arts world and has been for many years.
One more point to make is that Master Villari has trained extensively with the Monks at the Shaolin Temple in China. His programme has a lot of Shaolin teachings incorporated into it.
LOL. Villari made a donation to the temple, that is about as far as his affiliation goes. They showed him forms, but never taught him teh applications. Guess what , forms, without applications is not Gong Fu. It is just a dance.
@archersnan the Shaolin don't mess around with anyone isn't full bloody Hann chinese. they may have given him tea and a modest tour of their temple and grounds and maybe some forms but he would not be allowed to train. Another thing, the Shaolin only accept Chinese children not adults into their monestary.
@BTC141 I lived in China from 1991-2006. Nowadays the Shaolin Temple is a tourist site. A lot of Non-Chinese are training at DengFeng, a Shaolin Temple related city in PRC. Thanks have changed a lot. 我以前在中国和台湾学过中国拳法
Fred Mertens (the man knows his stuff) says that people who use the term "Mcdojo" usually don't have two sticks to rub together because they are too busy trying to be derogatory by comparing school owners that know how to run a business with a multi-billion corporation. Personally, I live for the day when I can donate a ton of money to charity, like McDonalds does.
What are you talking about? Do you seriously think a calling an MA school a McDojo is some business reference?
The term McDojo has nothing to do with a business comparison and everythnig to do with the fact that "McDojos" much like McDonald's are on every corner. And much like McDonald's the products/styles they serve are lacking in sustenance and quality and merely fill you up. But don't leave you with anything meaningful.
McDonalds are every corner because they are incredibly successful businesses. So yes, I seriously think calling a MA school a McDojo is a business reference. As to the second part of your post, I must simply discount it, because my experience with Villari's tells me that the system is full of substance and meaning. And until you study with the same people I have, I cannot respect your opinion.
I was merely speaking of the term "McDojo" itself. I was not saying that Villari's schools are McDojos, I have no experience with them so I can't speak of them. My first martial arts training was at a Kenpo dojo and it was anything but a McDojo.
My explanation of a McDojo is simply how the majority of people understand the term, should you choose to use a different explanation so be it, but please don't think your opinion is gospel.
I don't think of the truth as gospel. I think of it as the truth. When I am wrong about something I cop to it.
I do apologize, however, for thinking you were one of the many who believe it fassionable to bash Villari's without any first-hand knowledge of the subject. Fare well, my friend.
No apology necessary. Just another example of the short-comings of text only communication. Just glad to see someone open-minded and honest. I would never bash a fellow martial artist without training with him/her first.
Continued success to you and your training. Take care.
Just one more thing. I have been thinking about these posts and I believe there is a bit of a miscommunication. I actually agree with you about the definition of "McDojo". My point is that when it is used it is usually by someone who does not know how to run a business and therefore is not as successful at it. So they feel they have to denigrate it. Thanks for your comments.
Grandmaster Villari... Trust me.. he knows what he's talking about. His 8th Degree's are beyond words, and they always say "I couldn't protect my family from him."
Wow, are you really, THAT ignorant? It says, right up there in the video title: Grandmaster Fred Villari Teaches Shaolin Dragon. His name is Fred Villari and he founded the Villari's school of martial arts. And why is he grandmaster? Because he founded it. And because he's a 10th degree fricken blackbelt.
Teaches in the title is referring to this demonstration not what he teaches on a regular basis. For the record, he IS the founder of Shaolin Kempo Karate.
I once had a article that listed the entire lineage of shaolin kempo karate. I cant seem to find the page anywhere otherwise I'd just send you the link. Shaolin kempo started on Hawaii by a student of James Mitose named William, "Willy", K. S. Chow.
i used to own a dojo...but don't go there anymore. still, even if you weren't being so ignorant, you'd listen to when fred villari actually invites his son to come up to the stage again.
It does take time but once you try it you will appreciate his level of mastery. Watch "Grandmaster Villari Cuts Loose" to see his Dragon kick applied in a more realistic situation.
