It is easy to judge a situation when you've never experienced it. He was stupid for threatening the cops, he shouldn't have lied about having a fire arm, but the police are paid to be professionals. They lost their professionalism by arguing with him on his level. When the police stated "they do not negotiate" they sentenced that boy to death for something minor. He wasn't a terrorist, he was a distraught young man who needed someone mature enough to handle this in a wiser manner.

at the end of the day if you are wanted for a serious crime and explain why you have no reason to end the stand-off peacefully the police are thinking human beings, if it comes down to a point where the police are concerned you have a gun I am sure they would much rather go home to their families than to wait to see if it really is a gun you are holding or reaching for and if you are willing to use it.
