50 mpg isn't impressive on a Prius.  It all depends on how you drive it.

Some people drive it hard and only get 40 mpg and others drive it skillfully and get 70 and far higher.

I'm not saying the tech here is fraudulent, just that this test doesn't prove the tech.

Also, look into the new cobalt based catalyst developed at MIT. (Just google it as youtube stupidly doesn't allow links here)

I know all about MIT's work. Good stuff. What you don't know because Bob doesn't mention it here - his Prius has achieved 100MPG on flats in the desert at highway speeds. You ain't doin' that. So much for your not being impressed.

LOL Can't be impressed with what I didn't know.

100MPG is clearly impressive! No doubt the extra hyderoxy fuel is making a significant difference.

As you know, hypermiling technique also helps a lot too. 

I've only driven a (rental) Prius once on a long trip and it's amazing how much the mileage fluctuates depending on how gently/sensitively the gas pedal is applied.

Agreed. That is why my tests are run on the same stretch of road, same speed, time of day, weight, and using the same pump. All factors as constant as possible.
