Crazy Dee, Art not just entertainment or decoration. Feelings are misunderstood as a art form that is why Saartjie's poetry is important. We are being misled. Beauty can be courage. Wisdom may come from suffering. Consider how much civilized people say they care and are sorry. But when we observe actions it seems more another lie then a truth. Thankyou for your honesty. black women are willingly sara bartmans now, that sadistic masochism mentality is embeded into them, it exist in porn with ghetto gaggers and rap lyrics,
4. & last but not least - how can they degrade & treat like crap some chick & then dissect her after death, preserve her, & even showcase her cunt for over 150 years?!?!?!
I mean, WHAT WIERD, PERVERTED, R. Kelly type of deranged LUST, FASTINATION, & WORSHIP IS THIS?!?!
Sounds a little like ancient Egyptians dicks worship to the point that they ereted monuments all over the old world - even in Washington, DC!!!
3. My big, fat, LOUD, obnoxious, former roommate who is shaped like Hulk Hogan or a door, has hair like Buckwheat meets a Piccinani, & is high yellow (& Europeans prefer darker, nergroid looks vs. mixed looks)& is basically a male repellent to all americans - & had Europeans from all over gawking frolicking all over her like she was some dime piece.
2. Blacks Nigerians r so desired by Italians (who damn near worship black women) that a very unfortunate Sara Bartman type job for NIGERIAN women (NOT mulatto's, N. Africans, E. Africans, etc. as it is in the US) is prostitution.
Europe L-O-V-E-S BLACK, nigga, nappy, negroid, "the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice" Africanoids SOOOOO MUCH, that:
1. Not ONLY was Josephine & Grace worshiped there & they also LOVE Macy Grey, India Arie, & MANY other REAL black sistas who NEVER get much love here in the states
"...if those sistas in video are hoes, then what about those whites models in the 80,90 on the catwalk half naked?claudia shiffer, elle mcpherson... "
AND "I don't understand why the French would allow such an atrocity to go on. Especially after such icons like Josephine Baker and Grace Jones were nearly worshipped there..."
Brother, you are absolutely right. I studied African History in college, read books, and yet I never knew who Sara Bartman was. Although I did hear the term, "Hottentot Venus" from this sister Renee Cox, who is an Afrocentric photographer that posed as Sara Bartman.
Sara's story is relevant to us today because our women are still viewed as sex objects no so much by just white people, but by our people as well which is unfortunate.
Dee is right . People (especially black )should really watch this and realize the truth . its a real eye opener for how also raceism has formed our modern culture.
Shut your RACIST ass up ccasia. This video is about a BLACK Woman, not asian.I know Your type.Always talking about how SUPERIOR you are,and how inferior Blacks are.Man you got ISSUES. This is about the 3rd Black site I've seen you on, spreading your Racist PROPAGANDA. If you can't come respectfully,Shut the HELL UP!!!
Dee man you are on point! Most cannot see that it's not art because people define success by a dollar amount and not the struggles that humanity has risen above. They feel like im getting paid and thats all that matters. Not once thinking that they have soul their souls. Thanks for the post bro!
Let us save our females. Link your struggle to help Black women to today's current events. (Hint War and economics) The time is short. Showing our women naked before the world is part of an organized effort to hurt all black people. I have watched it grow on the internet over the past 5 years. This is part of the "Fall of America". This is an effort to dehumanize black people. We must stop it. Keep postin.
an intelligent woman had an excellent memory & spoke Dutch fluently. Her skeleton, preserved genitals & brain were placed on display in Paris's Musée de l'Homme til 1974. When Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa 1994,Formally requested France to return her remains. After legal wrangling & debates in the French N.A.,France acceded on 3/6/02 Last resting place of Saartjie a hill overlooking the town of Hankey in the Gamtoos River Valley
Baartman later traveled to Napoleonic Paris where an animal trainer exhibited her under more pressured conditions for fifteen months. French anatomist Georges Cuvier & French naturalists visited her & she was the subject of several scientific paintings at the Jardin du Roy. She died December 29, 1815 of an inflammatory ailment, possibly smallpox, while other sources suggest she contracted pneumonia. An autopsy was conducted and the findings published by French anatomist.
"The labia minora, or inner lips, of the ordinary female genitalia are greatly enlarged in Khoi-San women, and may hang down 3 or 4 inches below the vagina when women stand, thus giving the impression of a separate and enveloping curtain of skin". Saartjie never allowed this trait to be exhibited while she was alive.
Saartjie travelled around Britain, showing what to Europeans were unusual bodily features, thought to be typical of her people. She had large buttocks, a condition known as steatopygia, and visitors were permitted to touch them for extra payment. In addition, she had a sinus pudoris, otherwise known as the tablier (French word for apron or curtain of shame)", all names for the elongated labia of some Khoisan women.
Saartjie "Sarah" Baartman (1789 -- December 29, 1815) was the most famous of at least two Khoikhoi women who were exhibited as sideshow attractions in 19th century Europe under the name Hottentot Venus—"Hottentot" as the then-current name for the Khoi people (this now offensive term), and "Venus" in reference to the many works of art depicting the female form.
Baartman was a slave of Dutch farmers near Cape Town when Hendrick Cezar, the brother of her slave owner, suggested that she travel to England for exhibition, promising her that she would become wealthy. Lord Caledon, governor of the Cape, gave permission for the trip, but later regretted it after he gained a complete understanding of its purpose. She left for London in 1810.
Saartje Baartman was born to a Khoisan family in the vicinity of the Gamtoos River in what is now the Eastern Cape of South Africa. She was orphaned in a commando raid. Saartjie, pronounced "Sahr-key", is the Afrikaans form of her name; it translates to English as "Little Sarah", where the use of the diminutive form commonly indicates familiarity or endearment rather than a literally short stature. Her original name is unknown.
from looking at the responses to your commentary, I'm amazed at the number of people who just don't get it! Serious is probably a word none of them are able to define!
I hail you and all these other intelligent, beautiful people of African desecent that are educaing our people. The influences that we've had on this country and the entire world are only now coming to light. Thanks.
I agree with you that a lot of the rap music today is geared toward exploiting all women. However I don't agree that all rap music is responsible. Although they may be few and far between current artist like Common and Mos Def make uplifting music. We the people who listen to the music, we designate the popularity of the music. If we did not listen to it, they would not play it.
People - as in the family - are still too busy trying to be famous. So desperate is their need for fame they'll sell anything to get it. Including their mother, sisters, themselves. Sad but true.
My friend how can you not relate what he is talking about to the "video vixen?" Or am I saying the same thing your saying? What your saying is that they are NOT relatdd or am I wrong?
Crazy Dee, I'm sorry but I can't separate the 'video vixen' of today from what happend to Sara Bartman all those years ago. It may be because I'm a black woman and have been sexually assaulted before. That probably plays a part in how I'm thinking now. I think that by glorifying women as sexual objects is as far from art as you can get.
POWERFUL! i JUST RECENTLY LEARNED ABOUT HER iN MY AFRiCANA STUDiES CLASS... i HOPE THAT WE, AS PEOPLE, GET THE REAL MESSAGE! THANKS BROTHA.. CHECK ME OUT WHiLE YOU'RE AT iT.. i'M DEFiNiTELY NOT "BUTT SHAKiNG"
BRAVO! A few years ago, I took an African American history class...then I looked into the OBJECTIFICATION in the mainstream culture, and the reality of single mothers and poverty in society. To treat a woman of another group that way is a form of dehumizing them, derogatory to the group. It's not sexual. It was done to corpses in Vietnam. The sexual part is a symptom. Great document. Respecting your women is respecting yourself.
I don't understand why the French would allow such an atrocity to go on. Especially after such icons like Josephine Baker and Grace Jones were nearly worshipped there. There are so many African Americans like myself with French blood being from New Orleans not to mention the Hatians and Dominicans. This proves their admiration for us to be true. This woman could have been the first Josphine Baker yet she met with such horrors. I find it heartbreaking. God rest her soul.
This is a very tricky issue,in one hand what happen to sara bartman was inhuman and tragic,in the other hand the way black women are portrayed in rap video is what made some people want a black woman as wife.black people in general were told for centuries that they were less than human, this led some to even deny their own blood,if those sistas in video are hoes, then what about those whites models in the 80,90 on the catwalk half naked?claudia shiffer, elle mcpherson...
When searching for Sara Baartman, it's better if you search with her African name, "Saartjie Baartman." Also, Baartman does have two a's in the middle. If you search the way he spelled it in his video, you won't get much.
Crazy Dee-If you really want to investigate something worthwhile, investigate how long white women have relentlessly attempted to duplicate the "Sara Baartmans" of the world. There are so many Sara's in my family including myself. We love our image and we know that white women continue to try to duplicate our bodies through padded girdles and bras and now surgery. This is my re-butt-le on behalf of the sisters with the big old butts who consider them ass-ets
If you heard the brother correctly, I do not think he was saying that big old butts aren't beautiful. He's saying that the beauty of the black woman should not be exploited the way they are portrayed in most rap videos. Sara Bartman was forced to do what video vixens do willingly. Knowing history helps to shed light on today's practices.
Thank you for your re-buttle to "sistergetitright" because she had "got it wrong!! She totally missed this brothas point. I hope she gets it together. I have nieces that I preach to daily about never compromising their integrity the way so many of our beautiful black queens are. I hope sistergetitright actually does get it right!
I dont understand what you are saying...one hand you say the booty shaking is (to paraphrase)spitting on Sara Baartman and her experience and then you talk about your art not being accepted(what kind of art is it..show us samples)
after watching I wish All people would get it together. this is evil for ALL, human beings.. We need to become people.. her story is the same as in every countries history through time... get the big picture, it needs to stop..
dude, i do not get your point at all. Sara Baartman was dehumanized and degarded as less than human in part to justify slavery to the European masses. Where so you see the black woman's physical aspects being portrayed as art? Rap videos? Ive heard that argument before and its lame. I don't buy it.
who sold slaves to the traders of the high seas? the conquering other black tribes.. history shows that the conquring (mispelled who cares) barbaric conquiring victor turned the defeated into slaves.. for hundreds, of years. they should be the blame, 'til idiots woke up too see this evil. All poor that came to early usa, treated as slaves, unless they ran away.. read how poor had to become endentured to some rich slaver..
thats a very eurocentric view. it's called divide and rule man. Africans are not to blame for the 100's of years torture that other Africans endured in the Americas. That's just not it. If you see it differently I suggest you educate yourself on the Maafa and learn the truth.
Crazy Dee , We are the victums of Cultural Amnesia! Please, please look for and order the publication; The Journey of the Songhai People. Authored by Robinson, Battle & Robinson, Copyright 1987 by Calvin R. Robinson, Redman Battle and Edward W. Robinson, Jr. through the Pan African Federation Organization. It Will Literally Change Your Life!!!!!!!!!!!!
THANKS -- You earn a comment for being the best to present coverage of the many methods used by people to sensationalize the unknown and the sad situations people find themselves in. Too bad those people had nothing better to do. Probably at that time Sara did not even realize what was happening to her or her life.
Wikipedia is not a resourceful source of information seeing thats its based of of the facts of the individuals who published the website. its based off of how they feel about the information they found and not facts. please if you want to learn more about Saartjie Baartman, find the documentary or a more credited source on the web.
Isn't it interesting that Josephine Baker went to France also, but willingly chose to exploit her sexuality. Why then should we applaud her and include her in Black History?
@poetryindeed We should honor her because she freed us from the bondage of Sara Bartman. Before Josephine Baker, and woman like her, the black woman was ashamed of her physique.
Some, who do not know about Josephine, still harbor low self-esteem issues about their bodies, go places like "freaknik" styled events, to get attention, but find a repeat of the "Sara Bartman" abuse.
Every young black girl should know about Josephine, and Sara, so they can stop the madness.
Thank you crazy D you got my respect Brother I HATE WHAT THEY DOING TO THE BLACK WOMEN BUT TODAY I THANK THE HON.MIN LOUIS FARRAKAH TO ASK THE BLACK WOMEN TO COVER UP CHECK OUT THE DVD THE DIVINE WOMEN GAVE ME HOPE AND AGAIN RESPECT AS A BLACK WOMEN. LONG LIVE MUHAMMAD

ccasia2008 3 years ago
Brother, you are absolutely right. I studied African History in college, read books, and yet I never knew who Sara Bartman was. Although I did hear the term, "Hottentot Venus" from this sister Renee Cox, who is an Afrocentric photographer that posed as Sara Bartman.
Sara's story is relevant to us today because our women are still viewed as sex objects no so much by just white people, but by our people as well which is unfortunate.

Cuvier notes in his monograph that Baartman
an intelligent woman had an excellent memory & spoke Dutch fluently. Her skeleton, preserved genitals & brain were placed on display in Paris's Musée de l'Homme til 1974. When Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa 1994,Formally requested France to return her remains. After legal wrangling & debates in the French N.A.,France acceded on 3/6/02 Last resting place of Saartjie a hill overlooking the town of Hankey in the Gamtoos River Valley
lusciousdaime 4 years ago

Saartjie never allowed this trait to be exhibited while she was alive.
lusciousdaime 4 years ago
Saartjie travelled around Britain, showing what to Europeans were unusual bodily features, thought to be typical of her people. She had large buttocks, a condition known as steatopygia, and visitors were permitted to touch them for extra payment. In addition, she had a sinus pudoris, otherwise known as the tablier (French word for apron or curtain of shame)", all names for the elongated labia of some Khoisan women.
lusciousdaime 4 years ago 2
Saartjie "Sarah" Baartman (1789 -- December 29, 1815) was the most famous of at least two Khoikhoi women who were exhibited as sideshow attractions in 19th century Europe under the name Hottentot Venus—"Hottentot" as the then-current name for the Khoi people (this now offensive term), and "Venus" in reference to the many works of art depicting the female form.
lusciousdaime 4 years ago
Baartman was a slave of Dutch farmers near Cape Town when Hendrick Cezar, the brother of her slave owner, suggested that she travel to England for exhibition, promising her that she would become wealthy. Lord Caledon, governor of the Cape, gave permission for the trip, but later regretted it after he gained a complete understanding of its purpose. She left for London in 1810.
lusciousdaime 4 years ago
Saartje Baartman was born to a Khoisan family in the vicinity of the Gamtoos River in what is now the Eastern Cape of South Africa. She was orphaned in a commando raid. Saartjie, pronounced "Sahr-key", is the Afrikaans form of her name; it translates to English as "Little Sarah", where the use of the diminutive form commonly indicates familiarity or endearment rather than a literally short stature. Her original name is unknown.

coochierot 4 years ago
I agree with you that a lot of the rap music today is geared toward exploiting all women. However I don't agree that all rap music is responsible. Although they may be few and far between current artist like Common and Mos Def make uplifting music. We the people who listen to the music, we designate the popularity of the music. If we did not listen to it, they would not play it.

youngmatty 4 years ago
Crazy Dee, I'm sorry but I can't separate the 'video vixen' of today from what happend to Sara Bartman all those years ago. It may be because I'm a black woman and have been sexually assaulted before. That probably plays a part in how I'm thinking now. I think that by glorifying women as sexual objects is as far from art as you can get.

This is my re-butt-le on behalf of the sisters with the big old butts who consider them ass-ets
sistergetitright 4 years ago 2
If you heard the brother correctly, I do not think he was saying that big old butts aren't beautiful. He's saying that the beauty of the black woman should not be exploited the way they are portrayed in most rap videos. Sara Bartman was forced to do what video vixens do willingly. Knowing history helps to shed light on today's practices.

Thank you for your re-buttle to "sistergetitright" because she had "got it wrong!! She totally missed this brothas point. I hope she gets it together. dude, i do not get your point at all. Sara Baartman was dehumanized and degarded as less than human in part to justify slavery to the European masses. Where so you see the black woman's physical aspects being portrayed as art? Rap videos? Ive heard that argument before and its lame. I don't buy it.
ambelle 4 years ago 3
who sold slaves to the traders of the high seas? the conquering other black tribes.. history shows that the conquring (mispelled who cares) barbaric conquiring victor turned the defeated into slaves.. for hundreds, of years. they should be the blame, 'til idiots woke up too see this evil. All poor that came to early usa, treated as slaves, unless they ran away.. read how poor had to become endentured to some rich slaver..
aloethere 4 years ago
thats a very eurocentric view. it's called divide and rule man. Africans are not to blame for the 100's of years torture that other Africans endured in the Americas. That's just not it. If you see it differently I suggest you educate yourself on the Maafa and learn the truth.

Isn't it interesting that Josephine Baker went to France also, but willingly chose to exploit her sexuality. Why then should we applaud her and include her in Black History?
poetryindeed 4 years ago
@poetryindeed We should honor her because she freed us from the bondage of Sara Bartman. Before Josephine Baker, and woman like her, the black woman was ashamed of her physique.
Some, who do not know about Josephine, still harbor low self-esteem issues about their bodies, go places like "freaknik" styled events, to get attention, but find a repeat of the "Sara Bartman" abuse.
Every young black girl should know about Josephine, and Sara, so they can stop the madness.
