I know the video quality isn't so great but can't you tell these are ADULTS playing in the band? There is one high school girl sitting in the trumpet section, maybe that threw you off.
He was a truly blessed soul. Not only did he create beauty , but he worked all his life to help others do the same. I can't think of a higher calling.
That chart is from the Woody Herman book, arranged by John Fedchok I believe. It was always done as a multi-trumpet feature. The 1st time I heard it live, 3 trumpets split the solos.
Often times when trading solos I will face the other player I am trading with especially if I am in a small place which this certainly is. Great posting and good band too.
Maybe I'm not up to date on solo etiquette; never knew "pointing a bell" towards someone was bad form. I thought trading solos is about conversation. One frequently faces the person one is having a conversation with. As far as the ending, this is a jam session. Impromptu. Do all your jam session efforts have studio-quality endings?
I agree with you, volvo945. And, having been a follower (some might say "disciple") of Maynard for years, I'd hazard to say that he loved it, too! He certainly didn't seem to be the least bit put off with the proceedings. He looked as though he were having a good time, which is what it's all about.
tyoonz: funny you should say "have a good time". Before they played that I had the good fortune to spend a few moments talking to Maynard at his table and introduce my trumpet-rapid teen-age daughter to him. She asked him what is the secret to his success as a horn player. He replied quickly: "Have fun with it." That says it all!
Good work, Steve! Of course, Maynard is still "The Boss"! I couldn't imagine going head to head with Maynard! This is the best clip I've seen on here!
That explains it, I didn't look at what I was listening at. Maynard really was a nice guy; and here you have provided further proof.

This is a childish and disrespectful display of trumpet playing by Steve. Why in God's creation would he try the licks he did during this solo?
