  • One of the best out there, no question!

  • Andy Timmons on guitar :-)

  • amazingness

  • Simon oozes excellence!!! Incredible drummer, writer, clinician!!

  • first tune is in 11/8 and second in 7/8

  • @josakk , 7/8 is "well, if i concentrate like there's nothing else on earth I can play it", but 11/8 is just wicked. Need to be a very talented musician to be confortable in that measure.

  • when i look to his drumset i must think of keith moon

  • and the second songs in 7/4

  • i think its in 11/8....not sure though. its awesome whatever the time signature is...

  • @boredomisexciting yeah i hear 11/8 too

  • lol you would think with the standard metal set up they'd burst out with blast beats and other metal shit, then is awesome jazz

  • what's the first song

  • @foamysqueak11 its called Kumi Na Moja

  • is this metal jazz up until 1:40 or something? im not sure im a fan.... still he is doing a better job then me i guess. lets just give it 15-20 years xD

  • Simon IS GOOOOD!!

  • Toto would just be the famous Mutt from Wizard of Oz if it weren't for Simon Phillips

  • @joeydeleste What! Jeff Porcaro (The original drummer) made toto, Simon just kept it going

  • See the dude running ableton live...WIN

  • its nice to hear andy timmons in a group like this

  • Hmmm. whats the 3 floor toms in a diamond formation for ? :)

  • @KotowTV meh, why not? :P

  • Simon u Wonderfule Artist.+TAMA BB...

  • usually most drummers as they get older, will , for lack of a better word,"soften" their set up, either with smaller sizes, lower their hardware and instrument adjustment levels and positions, etc..and so on so forth..but not Simon..still has the exact same set up he had 25 yrs ago ! incredible player with a keen sense of musicality !

  • This is superb, composed of high level professionals including Andy Timmons, Simon Phillips and others.

  • billy ward just keeps rockin on the shaker ;D

  • SP is the best living drummer right now, no question in my mind. There are some really, really groovy jazz drummers out there, but they lack the astonishing versatility of SP. And no offense, but rock drummers suck in general... SP has the best sound.

  • @shaygahweh go check out travis orbin, gavin harrison and matt halpern. gavin was brought up on jazz, but he plays primarily prog rock these days.

  • @TtAbrams thanks! Gavin Harrison is out of this world!

  • I know Simon plays a different type(s) of music, but people rave about Mike Portnoy, but his playing so reliant on double bass drums... Simon has kill double bass drumming skills, yet he is so versatile and the uses the big kit in unique way. He's been a favorite of my for years. I met him at one of his clinics in the mid 1990's. I love how he tunes his kit – very open with no muffling, just a little on the bass drums

  • simon trying too play like billy cobham in his younger days

only billy is 100 times better

simon plays more with technic than his feeling

and billy plays more with feeling than technic

  • @seonittinoes Simon admires Billy Cobham and makes no bones about his being a major influence in his move to double bass drums in the mid 1970s. But Simon Phillips has a unique sound and I could easily differentiate Simon from Billy on audio.

  • Simon Phillips is a musician's musician. He is a virtuoso and is untouchable by petty criticism. I am not fond of his style of music (light jazz) but that is meaningless to his talent or influence. I kowtow to you Simon and thank you for your talent, teaching and transcendence.

  • @jordan3222002

    progressive fusion.

  • SYDUB that would be Billy Cobham and me haha. Left handed on a right handed kit.

  • I don't know an other left handed guy playing on a right hander drum like him.

  • DUDE! HIS TOMS ARE AMAZING!

  • Simon's allright. Leave him alone.

  • 10 peoples likes Travis Barker

  • The only (very well known) drummer that I even know of that uses a Tama kit that isn't unnecessarily huge is Brann Dailor. Why do other drummers seem to need so damn many drums?

  • @r4pt0rP5K to get more sounds...various beats and high and low...

  • @joelioes Or to overcompensate for their small penis.

  • @r4pt0rP5K i have a relatively big TAMA kit and there is nothing wrong with it, gives you more opportunity to do more things, and its allot more fun too, 5 peice kits are cool, but when you have more of a variety you can do allot more.

  • OH and BTW Simon Phillips always blows my mind. Another guy who is approachable and a consummate pro. Of all the drum sounds I have heard he, Billy Cobham & Lenny White (had tea with him in his basement, what a cool dude!) have the BEST fusion sound around. OH and don't forger Curt Cress from the band Passport. If ya don't know it son ya better find the song Jadu off the Cross Collateral album... GREAT drum sound. God Bless & I am really hoping someone has a hook up on Greggs MDFest Video. Tanx

  • .."DUDE! Your way too calm to be playing what your playing" He was throwing down this SMOKING solo & talking to me calmly as could be! Dude not only rocks but he is really a sweet hearted person AND he loves Jesus which is the key.

Anyway after that long winded story, it's been years and short of calling Mrs Spagnardi (owner MD mag) and bugging her I'm sure one of you out there in utube land has access to the footage of Gregg's time slot. Wish I could remember which year but I was at a lot so??

  • (part 3) I leaned back, grabbed Allen White's super sweet custom snare and went back under Gregg's leg and set it in place...Keep in mind this was all going on in the middle of a BLAZING drum solo full band backing him up drummers cheering & going crazy scene, and I backed out stood up & said "ok Gregg all set" and he started talking like he was sitting pool side "Hey bro, that was a good Iidea thank's for gettin my back....." & I'm like.....

  • (part 2)...It was a few days after Greggs personal tech passed away and I offered to cover him. it's a long story to type here but during his time slot he broke a snare drum head, turned to me and said "Guess it's a good thing you borrowed that snare from Allen White" (who btw jokingly offered to end my days if it came back w even a finger print!) I said ok Gregg on 3... he lifted his hh foot over my head so I could craw under & removed his new out of the box w 10 min old, now broken head....

  • Simon played at an earlier MD Fest and I still have his broken gong drum head!

I was the lead drum tech for the Fest for about 13 years working under Rick Van Horn and I am searching for footage of Gregg Bissonette at the fest w the Mustard Seeds. (Gonna have to do this in a few posts... running out of typing space)

  • is the guitarist andy timmons?

  • 1:12-1:16 Sick!! He manages to keep 4 cymbals moving & still have time for his snare!

  • i dont thnk his resonant bass drum heads are supposed to be warped like that.

  • @zzzzzushi I think what you're looking at and think is 'warping' is actually the duct tape that's wrapped around the pillows inside the drums.

  • he needs more floor toms...

  • lol ed hardy shirt.....fuck

  • well it was a drumming competition, so the fact that he is showing off on the drums is the whole point, duh. If you don't like it, then don't listen to it, it's not supposed to be incredibly emotional music or anything, just doing his drums with some nice session players to complement it.

  • is that everette harp on sax

  • MORE TOMS!

  • Jazz fusion SUCKS ASS!!!!

  • wank wank wank wanky wank...................

  • andy timmons!!! simon phillips!!! oh my gosh!!!

  • Billy Ward on shaker ladies and gentlemen!

    What a guy!!

  • Is it Wayne Krantz ?

  • hahaha , Simon is wearing a Ed hardy t-shirt !!

  • It's amazing how todays supposed players can criticize another when he himself hasn't done anything. I suppose you have to have an ear for music to understand what's really goin on. open up and listen. there is an intricate number of things goin on here. Weckl, Holdsworth Bruford Caliuta and the like have opened a hell of alot of doors for us who want to improve and know that the unthinkable is now possible. just listen to thomas lang, Donati Terrana, and minneman just to name a few.

  • white guy, black soul

  • from some angles.... it's Anthony Bourdain on the drums==

  • @humbledrumah ahahahah

  • @humbledrumah or even Dustin Hoffman with curly hair!!! =)

  • wow modern drummer 2008's just an amazing example of how drummoing is progressing with players just getting better and better anndddd better :)

  • Andy Timmons!

  • Does that idiot knows that there a thing called racks?

  • @drummerboy2196 not every drummer with a big drumkit needs a rack...

  • @drummerboy2196

Much to learn young man. If you sat behind that drumkit, the last thing you would be thinking about is which method of mounting was used. Focus more on what this incredible drummer is doing and you will find yourself overwhelmed with the amount of knowledge you can gain by this one video

  • @drummerboy2196 That idiot is one of the best drummers around and a legend, you couldn't even tune his snare drum, so please listen and learn.

  • @stickstam Pull down my pants suck my dick and enjoy the flavor

  • @drummerboy2196 Have you had that conversation with yourself yet ? , you know what I mean, not that there is anything wrong with that.

  • @drummerboy2196 I expect so. He's used one for years.

  • this is weather channel music, your local on the 8's currently in your area... awesome drumming

  • INCREDIBLE DRUMMER.....ONE OF THE BEST...

  • don't watch it then fool

  • I've been watching simon for 20 years and it never gets old he's awesome.

  • his drums sound like shit

  • @DrumCoalitionWithWar How so? Natural, untriggered and thight sound.

  • I actually like 'boring out of date fusion'

  • Comment removed

  • i think he needs more drums

  • 1:46 ROFL YUNGARHAGARAGAHAAAN!!!

  • omg his wearing an ed hardy's shirt ... oh no... xD

    awesome nevertheless :) :)

  • why do most of the comments seem negative when theres only like 9 dislikes

  • @atomsever Because dumb cunts have to shout louder than intelligent musicians.

  • His kit was made to play metallica gigs. (Sarcasm)

  • Simon shits funk, breathes latin, and pisses excellence my friends.

  • @dantean This was a festival to showcase Simon. That's like going to a drag race and saying "we live in a time of fast cars instead of boat shows". You might want to do some research on Bruford, he has written some incredible compositions like Palewell Park. youtube.com/watch?v=pDCeel-Zti0&feature=related

Your comment isn't without merit but a little out of place and somewhat overgeneralized.

  • All I can say is... Fucking Hell!!! Simon ripped it on the first track.

  • I have a doubt, the first song is in 5/8???

  • @Penillin 11/8!

  • @tilman79 , yep totally right haha i was counting it all wrong I was like 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 1...., (well that´s 8th notes too right?) although you can count it like that to right? Sorry is that i´m practicing, counting all the music that I´m hearing hehe.

  • whats the name of the Band ?

  • @nimer42 What's the OPENING SENTANCE?

  • @Philzwhodrumz i know its simon phillips but the band

cuz he have too many bands

  • @Philzwhodrumz i searched for the name but i didnt found anything from what he said something with Proda^&% i dunno

  • @nimer42 I think they're called 'Protocol'

  • @Drunkwraith,you keep the faith, you're seeking knowledge and have a good ear for whats real. The AZZCLOWNZZ are content with AZZWIPE music and by playing it have accepted mediocrity in music. When someone like Simon Phillips is criticized by AZZCLOWNZZ who basically are limited in their knowledge of music it shows you the level of degradation people continue.Between the AZZCLOWNZZ and the RAPAZZ's it's no wonder we get the low level of music we get.

  • the solo breaks(@ :48) is definitely taken from the bridge section of Beck's "Freeway jam"

  • o no why do people play stuff just cuz it's complicated when it doesn't sound particularly good?

  • i really think nicko mcbrain should have a new dvd,....simon philips is a jack off,....why have such a huge kit when all you do is play boring slow beats,...man all this stuff nickocould play on a single pedal!,....simon philips the lame french duke of drumming,....

good beat in rosanna,...but come on!....seriously?!

  • @punkrockdrummer1990 Simon Phillips is English, not French. Does his name even sound French to you? Nico McBrain is a lame metal drummer and I guarantee you anything Nico can play with one foot Simon can as well. And Simon didn't come up with the double shuffle beat to Rosanna, it was Jeff Porcaro. So agreed, I think this music is lame, but get some basic info on the drummers you slam, as well as those you praise, and then some of us may listen to you.

  • @punkrockdrummer1990

You are obviously not a drummer, as this is very technically and musically challenging music,Simon is one of the best all around drummers in the world, Nicko

mcbrain? you must be joking, even Nicko would admit Simon is on a whole other level, you might want to listen to a variety of music besides Iron Maiden or punk rock and gain some knowledge.

  • @stickstam : McBrain is far more distinctible and original in his drumming but Philips is by far, a better drummer technically. Its all a matter of taste dude.

  • @punkrockdrummer1990 yea really!

  • It's usually musicians on a very low level musically speaking that always find ways to criticize virtuoso musicians. I know many players after 30,40 or 50 years that play the same Mickey Mouse beats that they've played their entire life. And these drummers feel the need to denigrate the virtuosos of the instrument. Music is about many things,it's not only about composing or writing 3 minute 3 chord songs.Greatness knows no boundaries.

  • @Deagledrumzz Agreed. The world keeps getting dumber, which makes great musicians less noticeable when everyones raving about Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga's new single.

  • couldnt agree more , such puerile virtuosity and such god awfull music, all these dudes are all the same , long live ringo star and other really great drummer/musicians

  • Simon, who da man? Yes, YOU da man!

  • Best drummer EVER!!

  • Dude - Simon started this band in the late 80's it's not "in this day and age".. c'mon Simon is a great composer.

  • simon phillips is the best!!!

  • sounds like a cross between dream theater and the mars volta

  • pure music

  • Amazing dexterity.

  • Even though I'm a metal player, I have to give this guy respect. He makes me want to widen my horizons as a drummer.

  • That's completely normal, a surprising amount of metal drummers, including myself, will list jazz players and players of completely different genres as their influences. It's also very awesome!

  • As they say down under, "Good on ya!"

  • That second song has the sickest pattern.

  • Comment removed

  • Is it me or does the Sax player look like Dennis Chambers?

  • I wonder which exact pedals and pedalclubs he uses?

  • fusion will never die

  • Fusion came back strong late 80's early 90's, but after that Fusion pretty much died. These days hardly any Fusion records come out.

I reckon Fusion has transformed into Smooth Jazz.

  • And your a DumbAss!!

  • Wow , I can tell you're very intelligent and most importantly mature with that comment.

  • suck on my fusion

  • Wow, i just love to watch this movie and find inspiration

  • Simon Phillips fingered me

  • @Nato61 ???????????????????????

  • Me too!

  • Best drummer ever !!! That sound is amazing !!!!!!!!!!

  • Heh, the name Protocol is SO fusion...

  • best video

  • I love Simon, but what a snooze fest!!

  • We live in an age of players not composers, so every technically amazing musician has his own band, affording him an equal shot at our listening time. I can't tell you how uninterested I am by the "compositions" churned out by the great players of our time: the Holdsworths, the Brufords, Weckls--you name 'em!

  • @dantean Totally right, my good friend (and yours is one of the best explanations I have ever heard about the recent musical banality!): the "compositions" you have mentioned seem only to be the way to show high skills techniques, churned out just to impress and be consumed quickly. Unfortunately, life is becoming banal in everything.

    All my respect from Brazil!

  • Comment removed

  • @dantean I understand most of your boredom - but Holdsworth's composed some of the greatest jazz and fusion I've ever heard!

  • @dantean i dont understand your comment dude, you are "UNinterested"??

  • @dantean - You absolutely summed up today's "elite" legion of self-indulgent and narcistic players who all seem to play to feed their larger-than-life egos whilst playing the most exotic time signatures filled with as much ear candy as humanly possible. A bunch of chest-thumping, dick-wavers who have successfully created a music scene for the so-called intellectual. There are so few musicians left that are capable of producing compositions with a real "feel" that can move you emotionally.

  • @dantean great observation I tend to agree I can only imagine the market for this stuff is kids in college entering their first or second semesters of their jazz program

  • @jumpinjojo

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Exactly, Nato!!

  • Agreed, a lot of this sound seems to be lifted from what Dave Weckl's band were doing 15 years ago, and even that sounded bland at the time.

  • The songs being played here were both written and released by Simon back in 1995 so it kinda make sense...

  • this dude must be super bionic drummer man

  • wou...

  • This guy is Awesome !

  • I know this is MD Fest, but that sax solo was killer. Simon Phillips tore it up too.

  • What is the name of this song?

  • @sijmen310 First tune is Kumi na moja (Another lifetime, 1997). It's a 11/8, Simon plays 5 1/2, then 12/8 minus a eight note. I didn't like much his playing after Jeff's and I avoid 32th notes players but I reconsidered my position with this beautiful theme.

  • amazing how such virtuosos make such god awfull music

  • i agree!

  • I know right? It's like, these technically amazing session guys get together and make just atrocious music.

  • Yes!!!!

  • billy ward has got a very difficult part ;)

  • Simon is 100% right handed! he is just playing open handed. :)

  • maybe hes right handed and hes just playin open.

  • too much double bass pedal bollocks

  • maestro de maestros

  • is it in 11/4 ?

  • and now Mr Harpo Marx on the drums ...

  • a ride on the left...crank

  • he's ambidextrous remember!

  • no he isn't! he is a right hander. that's what i can't understand.

  • Left Hander! I know him!

  • hmmm...my drumteacher know him to and he sais that simon is a RIGHThander. whatever.

    he's a brilliant drummer!

  • youre a liar. he´s right handed, as he has stated hundreds of times in interviews.

  • The thing is, Simon IS right-handed but he is also one of the rare drummers who can play the same with his right or left hand, that's what makes him perfect! :D
