Please: Is this entrie production available to view? GREAT WORK! One of the great tragedies relating to this shows' popularity is the amount of productions you need to sit through just to find one director that truly understands how this show should be done. This production looked fabulous. I hope to see the entire thing.
Ok, so Texas State did this show in November, it was directed by Kaitlyn Hopkins, the original Meredith Parker in the off-broadway cast. And they did a cast of like 16 or 18, and it made the harmonies so rich and powerful.
Yes, the show can work well with larger casts and the composer originally wrote for more voices than the often-done 10. The downside is that you lose some comic possibilities with less doubling of roles. If you have a good cast of real singers, small casts still work wonderfully with this show.
i think theres enough people. we performed it with about 20 people. the dances are a bit scattered and look very simple. but other than that, its pretty good
The show with 10 people is good, but with more people the story is better. The script lists "chorus" and in some parts of the score there are more parts written than people on stage. So maybe 16 max.
Though the Off-Broadway show was done with a cast of 10, and personally, I think the show works best with that number (if done well). However, the composer DID originally begin writing the score to be sung by a larger cast (about 24 if I recall correctly) and large casts CAN make this score sound amazing. I've done the show twice with a cast of 10, but would love to try with a large cast sometime.
radar's right, the show was written and performed originally with ten cast members, six male four female and the cast play multiple characters. But with the way the music is and general set up of the show it can easily be expanded for multiple people. I've seen it done really well with 10 people and just as well with 30. I've never worked or seen 60 but the Author's Note does say that it can be performed with "ten or a hundred and ten".
Depends on the artistic direction and the cast really.
This is one of my favorite shows, and this is a very impressive opening number. Very well-staged and obviously well-performed. I hope there's more from this production on you-tube I can see.
Wow. AMAZING. Man, I would ask my director if we could do Bat Boy next year, but I don't think we'll have enough guys, and also this seems way to violent for their liking. Hell, they wanted to change the script in Footloose a little bit because it suggested masturbation and there was SWEARING.
For the "unenlightened"... the cast (except for the principals) play a variety of characters-- both male and female. Looks like everyone involved had a great time! Fun show and TERRIFIC clip!
Simply fantastic!
