Many thanks to YouTube for keeping this stuff and allowing us mortals to dip into their database, in a few years when the kids have seen through the x factor type crap and want to see real musicians its all here for them to be musically educated.
Those of you who saw this when it first aired, did you feel that this performance was also some sort of a political statement, a white country singer and black soul artist singing this song together? I wasn't even born when this was recorded and when I listen to this today I "just" hear this out-of-this-world performance, but I can imagine that back in the day this also made a big impression on another level. Anyone care to comment on that?
@lumdeloo Its an amazing performance and you have consider this was done less than a year after MLK got assassinated and several months before this performance RFK was assassinated and the Vietnam War was in full force . This country already trying to rebuild itself from the riots that hit all major cities. This performance was very much needed. People have said during this period was when they thought US was that close to total destruction with all that was goin on.
This is the unlikeliest of duos singing the wrong song on television of all places, and yet.... wow. This is the first video I have ever watched more than once (three times) in succession. Who knew Stevie Wonder could sing Buck Owens? Who knew Glen Campbell could sing gospel? And who would ever have guessed how well their voices would blend on such an inspired arrangement of Blowin in the Wind? Thanks!
thanks so much for sharing this - I remember my Mama used to listen to Glen Campbell when I was a little girl - and I've loved Stevie since then too...seeing them both perform together pulls at my heartstrings...
A lot of people forget (or don't know) that Glen filled in for Brian Wilson in the Beach Boys when Brian had to quit touring in the mid 60s, so the high-range vocal stuff is his thing. He also played guitar and bass on Pet Sounds.
Rarely have two bonified geniuses and musical talents with reputations the stuff of legend been paired together for a performance as special as this. Their collaboration on Dylan's most lasting testament to the brilliance of his own abilities as a songwriter is nothing less than a mind blowing thing to see and hear that borders on the supernatural. Campbell's legendary guitar prowess and pitch perfect vocal range combined with the " Boy Wonder's" other-worldly talents is a gift tro the ages.
Stevie singing this version for Bob Dylans' birthday show, was my the best video in youtube, but now is not avalilable.... I wonder if somebody could uploaded again!!!!
When Stevie sang the first words from Blowin in the Wind, my eyes watered and the hair on my arms stood up....I defy anyone to tell me that he wasnt born to sing.
What a great song this is .. Always true, and always in style.. The words are so powerful.. and to the point.. Its a song for those who don't want to soften their heart and realize that only by kindness and justice , will the human race survive.. Go Stevie..and Glen.. Love to you both..
Glen is one of the best kept secrets in musical history. My father told me when I was a kid that Glen Campbell was an amazing guitarist. Still to this day I can only find snippets of tunes where he showcases that talent. He can tear it up big time, but for whatever reason, he remaims humble, and unknown for an extreme ability to play the guitar. Someboby needs to put him in the spotlight he seems to avoid..to showcase his talent.
Amazing stuff. The old days were gone before I got here but man, that's real talent. Black and White, they both got a lot of soul. Glen Campbell must be the only white boy that ever gave Stevie a run for his money vocally! Kudos Campbell, you old Scot! Stevie is a legend!
These guys are both masters. Both are just both monster musicians, equals really. Campbell was part of the West Coast "Wrecking Crew" session team that provided COUNTLESS tracks for Motown Records (including Wonder), Beach Boys, and others.
I totally agree with you. I am Black also, and I have listened to Glen Campbell for many many years. He is one hellv'a musician. This is a duet among two very great and talented entertainers. This is an absolutely beautiful combination of talent. And yes, they both have soul. Peace
Did u hear how well Glen harmonized with Stevie on that Tiger by The Tail riff @ the beginning? Live and off the cuff no less. which pop stars harmonize that well live nowadays? or even sing live?
Stevie has nothing on Glen with this gospel great, i love them both very much, but Glen just showed Stevie it not just a black thang!! God bless them both!
I consider this my all time favorite musical video. It has everything a song could have for this award : hope and longing for peace , soul and folk, black and white , duet, a great melody, great singers , a Dylan composition , wonderful piano and orchestral support and so much love.....Thank you Stevie, Glen and Dylan and those who put this on YouTube.
I got the goosebumps too. I watch this video when I am feeling down. It is full of joy and happiness and it always puts a smile on my face to hear this song. Love it!
WOW!!!!!!!!!! This clip is amazing. Glen Campbell surprisingly holds his own with Stevie. Two great vocalists, each in his prime. Very heartfelt and soulful. 5 stars!
Great blend of talent. Bob's words light Stevie's flame, and Glen is also ignited as a result. I feature this cover of BitW on my Playlist, Bob with Covers.
This is so awesome! I've watched this so many times already! Look how Glen is surprised that Stevie starts singing the Buck Owens song in the beginning! Now that's classic!
Can't play lead guitar - are you serious? Campbell was a much sought after session guitarist before he was a star - he played on records by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles and the Mamas and the Papas. He's a brilliant lead guitarist.
since Stevie's career got off the ground (at such a young age and long before my time) he's always been politically vocal and done socially aware material, hasn't he? that's just the impression i've always had...
Had a #1 major hit song with Allen Toussaint's Southern Nights in 1977 and he really ticked off CBS for having racially diverse acts on his Goodtime Hour show, even did a break up/love song duet with Dionne Warwick on his show in 1969 of Say A Little Prayer/By The Time I Get To Phoenix. (he recorded it with Anne Murray, but it sounded best with Dionne IMO).
this is the first time i've ever heard glen campbell or seen him perform (i've seen pictures of him and heard of his name growing up, but that's it). he's talented and charismatic here. thanks for posting this.
Stevie Wonder is certainly a been there, done that individual. He has had so many brushes with greatness, so many adventures; what a stellar kind of guy!
I am a professional musician and I must say that this performance is the best musical video I have ever seen in my 47 years. Glen Campbell and Stevie Wonder have always been monumental musicians in every way. And to have them performing a duet together back in probably 1969 or 1970 and being able to relive that is a treasure chest of entertainment!
Ok that last post was the happy part -- read it first. Again, sad, but true, true true. God Bless the U S of A. I guess...
In a word -- wow. I'be been on Youtube a few years now, I don't know if any single video has ever pulled me in -- especially when they start call and response stuff (Stevie, sure, but this is FREAKING GLEN CAMPBELL, right? Doesn't surprise me. Been a fan of Glen's before anyone ever heard of him. You should hear him do the old Roy Orbison songs, or wail with 3 dog night. As to his guitar ability; both Elvis and Sinatra said he was the best guitar player they ever worked with.
