This was my dad's favourite song he used to sing it so well brings back a lot of memories of him, thank you tube for letting me hear this song, I miss my dad so much.Never ever get to hear him sing this song again.
I've heard a Paul Robson performance of this song on YouTube-although he originally used the "n" word in Old Man River, "darkies" in the movie, he sang this one "old, old Joe" because "black" wasn't pc at that time! Thanks for the Gluck version. Both she and Robson sing it beautifully.
is this the OLE BLACK JOE that was covered by jerry lee lewis in 1950's and also by crazy cavan in the 70's. cause i believe the oringial is by stephen foster in 1826 or summit. thanks for the post
I have many recordings by Alma and glad you liked this one. I believe if you visit curzonroad's channel he will have information on her. You can also read about her on wikipedia.
Greetings pax41 I have been browsing your collection of Alma Gluck. What a lovely singer. Thank you. And that photo of Stephen Foster. Powerful stuff when you are listening to Alma singing so beautifully. It would bring a tear to a glass eye.
Foster had many great singers of this work. Ponselle and Gluck in the begining of the XX century were the best. Thanks for sharing this beautiful video. jfsanin
Rather than writing nostalgically for an old South or trivializing the hardships of slavery, Foster sought to humanize the characters in his songs, to have them care for one another, and to convey a sense that all people--regardless of their ethnic identities or social and economic class--share the same longings and needs for family and home. He instructed white performers of his songs not to mock slaves but to get their audiences to feel compassion for them.
Thank you but I just noticed that I created a huge run on sentence with it. I am often surprised how others want to extend our political correctness to these historical recordings. How do we learn from the past if we try to erase its memory? Happy Easter!
According to those who perpetuate it, political correctness is boundless and omnipresent. Created with beautiful intentions, it actually ends up putting an unnecessary damper on great culture!
Vintage music! An who'd have thought less than a century ago that their old black and white stills could be broadcast worldwide in the blink of an eye someday?
You might check out my videos by Homer Rodeheaver singing The Unclouded Day and the Hayden Quartet singing In The Sweet Bye and Bye. I think you might enjoy them.
I love this.

That is a well thought out reply, un-intimidated by old prejudices or modern hatreds. I applaud that answer.
