  • RIP Danny

  • Gerry Rafferty's troubles with himself and the music business were not totally in vain. Stealers Wheel, City to City and Night Owl (album and song) will never be forgotten, nor will Stuck In The Middle With You, Baker Street and Right Down The Line.

  • legend from his generation underated by a lot of people one word to describe him brilliant r.i.p

  • Rip Gerry! you we will miss! BY ALL.......

  • Night Owl is the title track to his follow up to the City To City album. I bought both at the time. Amazing stuff, sad loss.

  • I remember when this album first came out in 1979. Not one of my more favorite albums but definitely worth a listen. I had this on tape back then. Unfortunately, it wore out quickly. I believe that album is now out of print.

  • R.I.P. Gerry, from Luxembourg

  • thats baker street eejit!lol

  • 25 years ago I married a girl from Scotland; I'm American. She introduced me to this album. The marriage and music only gets better with time!

  • Hi, I'm a Scot and married an American, we live in South Carolina.....ok I got half of it right lol....nah kidding, Gerry Rafferty is the man, glad to hear you and your lass still rock, slange.

  • one of Scotlands greatest ever musicians

  • I spent ages trying to find out who baker street was by, and when i found out, i went off it. Luckily i soon found this one which absolutely eclipses it.

  • Al, WHO????

  • Mine and Dads song xxx

  • NOW THIS IS MUSIC....please come back...

  • Gotta reach way back and find an album by Gerry R called"Wise as Serpents" (meek as doves) Its been 25 yrs since I had it in my cassette deck but is a great piece of work by the ultra talented Mr Rafferty

  • "As Wise As..." is from the Sleepwalking album, as many of his works available from amazon (they have 1 used copy for £50, but it's worth it). The new "christmas" album, Life Goes On, features a beautiful version of Silent Night, put it on!

  • Gerry Rafferty is an incredible musician! One of my all time favorites from the late 70's. My father had "City to City" and that's how I was introduced to Gerry's music. My girlfriends sister also had City to City on cassette and would play in her AMX on the way home from my girlfriends house! Gerry Rafferty's music is timeless.

  • @joevs21001 Like your story man!

  • Thanks!

  • Im a 23 year old metal fan who loves this music due to my dad playing it non stop when i was growing up :P

  • Jed who? Leonna who? Find me somebody of this guy's calibre around today getting the coverage they should be and i'll be a happy man. Reminds me of such brillant times (i was only around 9 at the time)

  • In 1979, I was in London right after college. I saw Gerry's album, 'Night Owl' in the window of a record store. I bought it and played it many times when I got back to the U.S. Years later, I got rid of my old albums and replaced many with their CD version. I could never find 'Night Owl,' however. Fast forward to 2009. Again, I was in London and searched for the CD, but still couldn't find it. I suppose I'll just have to be content to listen to Gerry's music on YouTube. Thanks for posting!

  • you are a legend

  • Thank god that youtube is showing just how brilliant gerry rafferty is.most of us from that from his era just took it for granted he was a genuis but im glad now more people appreciate him.

  • Haven't listened to Gerry Rafferty for years until tonight when I looked up 'Baker Street'. I was just a twelve when my 17yr old cousin, Allan introduced me to this & as young as I was back then, I loved it. Listening to GR always takes me back in my mind to those days when my handsome cousin would loan me different albums of his. At the time he had just joined the army & to this day I can still see him (in his uniform) walking into my aunt's house when he was home on leave.

  • Reminds me of when I'd just started work-in the winter I used to stand outside a bakery waiting for a bloke to give me a lift in a blue Skoda.Always had Gerry Rafferty on due to the fact that -

a-it was the only tape he had

b-his medium wave radio was crap-

    good days

  • Fab song - very melancholy.I taped off the radio last century 8-(

  • @lewisner You are so right about the melancholy bit. I love this song so much; lump in the throat stuff:)

  • this reminds me when i was 19 and didn't give a fuck ...

  • Lol me too!

  • This song reminds me of my Mother, she always had the best taste in music.:)

  • Sit back, open a beer and enjoy the genius that is Gerry.

  • This song reminds trees and stuff.

  • well guys,im gonna join ya...this reminds me of my dad....its fathers day in australia 2day....RIP old man

  • This reminds me of bacon and eggs. When i used to sit on my shed.

  • heard this on radio 2 a couple of weeks ago. first time i'd heard it, i've tore the arse out of listening to it since i found it on here. i thought he only wrote baker street and stuck in the middle but the guy has some fucking dynemite tunes!!! star is fucking awsome of his

  • everything this man did is excellent. i just hope that he gets his demons sorted out and releases some new music.

  • Great song. I always thought that it should have a chorus. Still excellent song by a wonderful songwriter actually singing about himself.

  • this is so fucking good

  • = )

  • @mimpilagi You bet'cha!

  • When you've lost someone so close to the best friend you've ever had, then I guess you too would look for a pub by a river and watch the water flow by and leave you to your sorrow.Hoping that things will be a little better after tommorow. Miss ya Dad and I'm only just starting to get it after all these years,

  • dont worry mate. my dad died very early in my life. but he's still going strong. you see, my dad dies only when i die. xx

  • @wot2wot2 I've joined youtube for about three years now and watched thousands of videos and have read many a comment ...but this is the best.

  • Totally agree, brought a lump to my throat too

  • Awe dis song rminds me of the dad i lost 2!!!!

  • absolut great and famous, G.R. is magic.

  • Mmmm, what would life be with out these fine songs from Gerry Rafferty, thanks Gerry.

  • Brilliant song, brilliant guy too

  • Paisley,s finest son, Gerry Rafferty.

  • gerry composed the whole song the rhythm was his composition as well , it's just how he wanted it

  • Gerry Rafferty's finest work !

  • Love this song , the lyrics are good and paint a picture of a lost man who sleeps around.

  • Great lyrics and a great delivery by Jerry, but the rhythm section are so uninspired and pedestrian they almost drag the song down. Should have been just him and his guitar.

  • Great tune. Ive just started to get in to Gerry Rafferty and i love this tune.Great voice, great songwriter.

  • buzzbuzz2k9 Your Dad has good taste =p

  • my dad says best song ever

  • a guilty secret,,,i was a punk...but loved this albun....lol

  • This makes my ears bleed.

  • If we all liked the same music then wouildn't it be boring !

  • Glad to report that Gerry is alive and well.He is aged 61,wiil be 62 next Thursday 16 April.Last heard living in Tuscany.

  • Humble Bum. Not being rude, it was the group he was in with Billy Connelly. Yes, thats right, The Big Yin.

  • Gerry we loved ya R.I.P. You will be missed.

  • How you figure he passed away? Do you know something the rest of us don 't?

  • Good old Renfrewshire...

  • God bless Gerry Hope he's okay

  • this here is some nice shit

  • im only 48, and was furious then in 1979that Gerry had found the way to Disco !!!then certainly with this double bass drums :-( That was then!

But now in 2009, it is really a master piece!

  • kick back, roll a big fat one, hit the play button and let Gerry do the rest, what a song, timeless classic!

  • And for the record, Night owl is from the album titled Night Owl, and Baker Street was released on the City to City album the previous year =)

  • I think I originally had it on a B side , But can't remember what the song was on the front . It was a long time ago & i'm getting old = )

  • im only 28, got brought up on Raffrety, listening to him on vynal LP's, good to see him on you tube, thanks for posting mate =)

  • God gerry reminds me of being back in the seventies pub free single and happy

  • I agree mate but, free pub single and happy sounds better.

  • just an absolutely great song from a great singer we ned more like him these days

  • Spot on Mucker.

This is a man who if he were to sing to you your mortgage/rent statement you would thank him for it.

  • Great Song Gerry Lad! 5 Stars From Me!

  • All Time Classic! 10/10

  • Gerry Rafferty is the master of soft jazzy pop

  • Simply beautiful in all its melancholy. Many thanks for this!

  • God Bless Gerry Rafferty, a super talented musician!!!

  • thank god about time someone added this classic

  • What a song sooooooo sexy ....Sends shivers all the way down my spine !!!!

  • An album title bloomer!

Night Owl was also the title track of his 1979 album (single edit of N/O was an edited to c.4 min). 'City to City', released the previous year, contained Baker Street.

  • Great song! Great lyrics! Great voice!

    Should be re released! :)

  • ça décoiffe.....je sais plus où j'habite....j'oublierais jamais celui qui m'a offert ce CD....son nom est écrit dessus....owl !!!!

  • Happy memories of 79. Better than Baker Street in my opinion also.

  • Thnxs for adding this song, love this one :D

  • Glad you all like it

  • This song was on the album 'Night Owl', I have it.

  • Cibi - Many thanks for posting this great track. In my view this runs Baker Street a close second. On a sadder note, I was concerned to hear that Gerry Rafferty had gone missing after discharging himself from St Thomas's Hospital in central London. Let's hope he's OK

  • Glad you enjoyed the song. I personally like this song more than Baker Street. I think that Baker street had been a bit "Overplayed" by the Radio Stations in the 90's & as such great tracks like this never got the Airtime they deserved.

  • I prefer "Night Owl" too. Very understated but also very intense in its own way.

  • The production he put on his songs was absolutely brilliant. I think Baker Street, etc were recorded and mixed at his studios near Shepton Mallet in Somerset. Love his music...., don't forget Royal Mile which was very distinctive. He always had this laid back, effortless delivery that was so his trademark. Terrific.
