What pisses me off the most about this play. Since the majority of the people commenting on this play did not even watch this game. Was that Chicago was kicking the shit out the Lions until the last two offensive series. And Lovie like he always does, went into that FUCKING WORTHLESS PREVENT defense. We wouldn't be talking about this stupid shit two years later.
calvin caught the ball. had possesion of the ball. came down with two feet in the endzone. his ass is on the ground with the ball in his right hand. the ball has broken the plain of the goal line. touchdown!
To all the top comments.... he caught the ball with both hands 2 feet down switched to 1 hand used the other to break his fall landed on his ass= the catch if you take everything away before the 1 hand and sitting it is still a catch that is full completion you can't bobble a ball with 1 hand witht he ball facing down, laws of gravity it was a BS call and if you get your heads out of the bears asses maybe you will see that.
Only the NFL can come up with STUPID rules like this one. The player caught the ball then hit the ground then the ball came loose. In simple language that's what many people, who watch football, would call that a Touchdown.
It's a process all u people who agree with this guy, a catch is a process u must have full control of the ball, Megatron dropped the ball before completing the process , therefore INCOMPLETE
@stratmandar No actually complaining about something that had no true bearing on the outcome of the season. Here the Lions win and finish 7-9 and Chicago finishes 10-6. Chicago still loses in the NFC championship to the Packers. Lions go nowhere as is the case most years. Now what, we've officially changed history. Throughout NFL.. No, throughout football history hundreds if not thousands of calls have been missed or somehow screwed up by officials. That have changed the impact or result of a..
@stratmandar game. The NFL made changes because of this play. We review every touchdown now. And now everybody from fans to players know what completing an act is on a scoring play is. This is not the wort call ever. This is something that happened a year and a half ago, that did not change the outcome of either teams season. Let's try to move past this stupid shit now shall we.
This sucks cuz he had 2 feet in bounds and when he wuz down and put the ball down they called it an incompletion 4 no darn reason at all.Same thing happened against the 49ers when they were still undefeated but they ruled it a complete pass cuz he got tangled in the net 4 the field goal
it sucks but this rule is 100% accurate. if the ball comes out when he goes to the ground, it's an imcompletion. it looks like he put the ball on the ground to celebrate and that's why he lost it, but finishing the play has to be your main concern. hold on to the ball, megatron
@stratmandar no, what if a receiver caught the ball in the endzone for a tenth of a second? it crossed the plane didn't it? you need to complete the PROCESS of the catch, not just get it across the plane
Detroit got screwed twice that year. First Jim Joyce made the worst call in baseball history that took away a perfect game by Armando Gallaraga with two outs in the ninth. Then 3 months later this monstrocity!
Its not like the Lions made the playoffs that year, or even had a winning season. That call had not long lasting implications, its not like it cursed the Lions for 50 years of losing.
it was the right call he did not complete the catch! he let go as he fell you have to maintain possession through the whole play it doesn't matter if both feet are in bounds you still have to maintain possession that's how a catch is made if that is not done its incomplete you may have wanted him to catch it everyone wants that for there team for them to catch every ball that ends up in the endzone but that's football for you! In the words of Mick Jagger you can't always get what you want!!
@JStacks92 You're right, he has to maintain possession through the whole play, but the play is over and ruled a TD when he gains possession in the endzone. He clearly has possession considering he's holding the ball one handed coming to the ground.
Not necessarily a bad call. According to the book, the refs made the right call. CJ just needs to know that he has to control the football all the way through. He can't just bail on the ball that quickly after a catch. If he had done that at the 50 yard line instead of in the end zone it woulda been a fumble or incomplete.
The only reason its BS is that the Lions should have won if Calvin could have just hung on to the football instead of going to celebrating so quickly.
@TheAndyk123 no if you watch it you will see that he has possesion falling to the ground. it is completley in his hand and he has full possesion. it was a clean catch and it should have been a win
The call was great cause when you think about it if he wasn't falling then that would have been considered a catch but because he was falling he had to have COMPLETE CONTROL of the ball. Bottom line it's a incomplete pass
@BrittfieldBeats sure. But it's a terrible rule. You have possession, 2 feet in bounds, cross the goal line, the play is over. Why do you have to maintain possession after the play is over?
@BrittfieldBeats Both feet in...whole body in...if that's the case then tons of completions should be overturned when not...the rule itself is a complete contradiction.
@stratmandar instant replay has given us this garbage....looks like a catch smells like a catch....its a catch , however you must control the ball al the way back to the huddle , and if you are sharting while in the air both feet must be inbounds shoes tied , and socks pulled up and cannot be a distraction during the shitting faze of the quarterback!
he caught the ball...easy and set it down, your crazy to sit there and think he didn't. caught the ball, 2 feet in bounds, SHOWS the ball to the ref, places it on the ground and wins the game. bought off...refs should have been fined for that
can someone explain why its a bad call and the calvin johnson rule ??
now, u have to put 2feet in bounds and have complete control before going out and come up with possesion. i prob wudnt have ruled it a td either because he hit it on the floor and didnt really have possesion.. not cuz he was out
it should have been a td yes..but by the rules at that time in the NFL no it was not a TD...just a victim of bad circumstances thats all. the game wouldnt have mattered for the Lions anyways.
It was a touchdown as soon as both of his feet hit the turf with control of the ball. If it weren't in the end zone it wouldn't have been a catch, but it was, so it was.
@joemichaels1 No, it was a TD, he had control of the ball with both feet planted in the end zone. It was a TD, and if you don't think so I'm glad you aren't a referee.
@degen83 Not only that, but his knees also touched the turf of the end zone before he lost control of the ball. The only way it would have been incomplete is if Johnson had been bobbling the ball up until the time he fell down.
@Rawk4Life True, he had control of the ball with both feet planted and when his knees his the turf. He lost control when he hit the ground which was after both feet were planted and his knees hit the turk. Good call, it was a TD.
Sorry fella, the ref simply applied the rule to the situation. It is the player's responsibility to establish possession of a reception in the air all the way through, the receiver failed to do this. Why is irrelevant.
Im a Vikings fan, i love to bitch and cry about play calling. Especially when we play the Packers. Lambeau doesnt hire officials no matter how much it seems, games arent rigged and these officials are criticised by every call they make. What i see is very questionable. Im not biased towards Detroit or Chicago for the record. He had the ball when his knee hit the ground. He may have only had one hand on the ball which is questionable and he did drop the ball on impact. Its just too close to call.
@TheIronPitbullSpeaks What happens when his knee hits the ground doesn't matter. He already had both feet in and he had possession of the ball at the time that occurred - that's a TD all day long.
