What kind of bulb did you put in first. Was it a incandescent, halogen, or mercury vapor. You should put Ten magnetrons on that microwave and see how much fun you can have.

@hanzmole1 microwave radiation id like airborne electricity, it condenses inside items and in the case of light bulbs, it can arc between points can cause plasma as is burns away the metal inside, under a inert gas shield.

They threw it out because the plate probably broke and original cost almost as much as the whole microwave. Same happened to me. It's better for environment this way :-)
