after my job loss in dec 2008,i knew things wewe bad,i took my car, almost paid off,and gave the dealer ship the keys.of course they say i still owe the money, which i have none.i have very litle unemployment.
...and while Union Administrators are buying resorts & golf courses, they only have the best interests of the rank and file on the mind. Great interview!!!
Fuck David Gregory. He is the kind of establishment mind fuck that got us into this mess to begin with. Good job thinking outside the box American media.
Building good cars that capture the imagination should not be such a problem. i think these geniuses at GM and Ford have been happily asleep at the switch for way too long. So has the whole country when it goes and buys hummers because Arnold says so.
If they didn't use crappy, foreign manufactured, parts using slave labor in places like Mexico... if they didn't deliberately engineer obsolescence in design... if they focussed on demand rather than Madison Avenue and a supply side mentality, that insures rapid depletion in resale value... if they designed with an eye toward economy, durabiiity, austerity and grace... well, then we wouldn't have spent 30 years making Japan rich.
Everyone is to blame. Firstly, the new administration is packed with bank interests. Hence the easy money and no firings demanded to banks. Secondly, the US cars industry has dragged it's collective feet in keeping up with new tech required to remain relevant. Thirdly, 40-50k is plenty of money to live on. Everyone needs to start living within their means.
Neither big business nor big labour has even been a friend of the worker: as soon as an operation grows past a certain point (unless you put very strong safeguards and organizational rules in place - which in most cases is not done) it will take on a life of its own and abandon or exploit the "little people".
union workers must have seized the means of production in all of these fucking companies:)
when the market capitalization of GM reached $3billion or something... they should have told the stockholders to fuck off and die and go on strike, pressure the policymakers, etc
Yes, and I make less than that doing a job that actually requires training.
You can't get paid these obscurely high amounts for jobs that could be done by a monkey. If you do, these industries will never be profitable. They will just outsource thees jobs to other countries.
Thats only 29k a year before taxes. most of the cars they make cost nearly as much. many of these jobs have already been outsourced as well.
the industry isn't profitable out of nowhere because workers make 14 instead of 12 an hour or 10 an hour but because over speculation in oil and a credit crisis. study economics? if the workers are reasonably paid then they and their community can purchase the cars they make helping to keep it alive.
The car industry in China is still profitable. They didn't built their entire economy on phony credit. It is not "speculation in credit" it is because spoiled consumers wanted to buy things they could not afford, so the politicians changed the rules so they could.
Consumption doesn't drive the economy. That's keyneism, keyneism is what you've had the past eight years. It doesn't work. Purchasing power comes from production, not salary.
Salaries need to be set in a free market, otherwise other companies, without these stupid unions, will just come in and compete and drive the company out of business. It is happening everywhere.
I worked 12 years for Ford. Long tedious hours. Any one just simply cannot do these jobs. Economics? Why yes Austrian. It's the economic people who ruined this country and not the automotive.
It's all the people. There's not "one sort of people". That's dangerously close to Weimar Republic populism.
Americans borrowed, the politicians changed the rules, and the industry liked it because they were making money. And yes, the automotive industry was part of it as they started selling cars on credit, and they have been going down even before the bubble burst.
This bubble, is big, it is huge, it is three bubbles on top of each other, finance, IT and construction/finance.
Requiring some stipulations and not just giving out cash is great and might actually lead to results instead of just wasted money?,but I don't know about making workers take pay cuts that's gonna hurt this already struggling state even more, but it might be necessary for them to actually keep these companies alive. It's much more of a management issue though.
Awesome job guys, the quality of this reporting is unheard of in mainstream or "public" broadcasting. In my fantasies this would be the future of the media, funded by a coalition of democratic institutions like unions and co-opts(or government?), in the meanwhile i urge people to donate!
It's business as usual for corporations & their political cronies. Attacking & weakening Unions. Stripping employee benefits has been #1 priority in order to pass profits to their beloved Share Holders since the 50's.
American News [filtered] Media oulets are also pro-corporations and keep pumping out myths in order to program the masses into believing that union workers are over paid lazy lot.
Nothing won't break the cycle until one day we wake up and realize we're 3rd world nation.
and yet oyu have developed nations that are socialist democracies that are more socially stable than the USofA. Though you might want high taxes, but if you want to boast about having the most rich people in the world while most of the population is becoming dirt poor ie a third world shitty country. Then ok let it be. You just can't boast anymore that US has the highest standard of living because we sure as hell don't par up well against the rest of the developed world.
What the hell are you talking about? Anyone who would be glad to see socialism (I am one) would realize that this is far from socialism or half-assed socialism at best.

14 dollars an hour is too much you fat cow. Entry salary at that level is insane on a job that requires basically no skill whatsoever.
