thats becuase the hippos are injured or sick.

hippos are found frequently laying dead in the water and eaten by crocs.

lions are very intelligent hunters. they only attack an animal that is smaller, weaker or sick. they can pick up the scent.

Most probably a group of lions killed the hippo (this doesn't seem to be common) and the male lion came to eat first. Or perhaps it was injured. Hippos are very difficult to hunt because of size and strenght but lions kill even elephants (in some areas). The only animal I've never seen eaten or hunted by lions is the Rhino.
