About age 5 or 6, 1960 thereabouts, I'd mischievously get out of bed to sit on the stairstep, sneaking a peek at this beloved t.v. show my young Dad (and Mom too I guess) always watched. Now all I know is that it was one true, original quality show, and oh lord what a glorious composition this is--an all-time fave! Some things (like that show and this tune) thankfully live on, but as years pass, remain totally unmatched. Not even close.
Okay, maybe I'm way off the mark with this observation but.......I hear shades of sound in this song in "The Avengers" British TV series theme music! I think this song was written before that show was on the air and I have to wonder if the composer of the British show's theme song was inspired by this great piece of music!
The series they could not rehash come to think of it they couldn,t remake anything from that era successfuly one had to be there and live the 60s to know what I mean a unique period in our history, class all the way and this masterpiece is a prime example along with the magnificent seven theme. I get on my knees every morning and give thanks I was alive then.
This is the way theme music should sound. It brings to mind such cool, a beach, romance and a warm connection to my family that I used to stay with each summer in Michigan (so far from California) lol, but the beauty of Red Arrow Highway and the beautiful wind. Everyone was into this series Route 66 then.
When i was 5 my parents my brothers and I drove route 66 from Michigan to California to see my grandparents. ( I was young but doing research think we picked it up at Chicago.)..but here is the trivia!!!! Does any remember Burma shave signs,,,,,but more important/,,,,who wrote Route 66?
@lacy235 Yes i remember B.T. well. Do you remember him & Julie London on Emergency Squad 51 with John & Roy in the 70's?. LOL- I JUST purchased out of my Walthers Big Book hobby catalog a set of burma shave signs to use on my H.O. scale model railroad lay-out. They have many different sayings to choose from. My siblings and i always would take turns reading those signs on trips when we were kids too. It was fun, good memories here thanks alot..
Man, this was such a cool show. I just started watching videos of Magnum P.I. Loved the show in the 80's. How refreshing to watch the tapes without the stupid station logos on the screen, pop-ups and split screen nonsence and the annoying talk overs.. Digital has completely ruined television these days. TMI...Re-runs are broken down to four and five minute segments so they can air more commercials. Just go toE-bay and buy these series. Who really needs tv these days anyway????
boswell1169: I don't understand. What is your definition of politically correct? I think you meant sex appeal, which was really coming on gangbusters in the early 60's.
On Friday nights after a week of school, just before switching to CBS for "Twilight Zone", with my weekly Coke and ration of cookies, I'd catch this theme on NBC at the end of this show - which I never watched.
to..... tp10488..... don't worry, they will never re-make this show. There aren't any actors who could carry it off. Harrison Ford as The Fugitive !!!!! Janssen had him beat by a thousand yards. Connery will always be James Bond and the pathetic re-make of Hawaii Five-O...I guess to make the show politically correct they had to add an A%@ kicking chick. I bet Jack Lord and James McArthur are turning in their graves !!!!!! LOL
@lovethediscogirls I agree 100%, the so-called "talent" around these days from the 14 to 16 year olds! These guys were men that had worked at their craft for years, studied, grubbed for bit parts till they made it big. These days these no talent wonders come from nowhere, and all of a sudden there megastars! Also there are no decent writers around these days, no composers, like Riddle, Jenkins, etc. You could go on and on! Glad I was around in these golden days!
@lovethediscogirls "I guess to make the show politically correct they had to add an A%@ kicking chick." I HATE THAT in modern filmmaking. What a tired cliche.
Always loved this theme song:):):) Nelson Riddle, always loved his arrangements, this song just sounds like it's from a different time. He was a great conductor!!!!!
This is superb - and some of you may like a piece featured in Mad Men Season 1, Caravan by Gordon Jenkins. Also on You Tube. Both have a similar groove - love that!!! Thanks for posting!!!
Will ONE of the hundreds of Sattelite/Cable channels PLEASE, PLEASE show these again????? A QUALITY television show, the likes of which we will not see again in this present age where all you need is 24 minutes of cheap sleazy sex jokes, OR a "talk show" which exploits dysfunctional people. This generation can not comprehend what it has missed.
This one REALLY does it! Back to 1960 when all was perfect (as I thought of it then). Probably the best US TV series ever, other than Twin Peaks. It was shot on location, a rarety then, and absolutely hypnotic!! WHY is that show not in syndication NOW, instead of all the ____ that is???????????????
I would happily put this theme song and the theme for "Mr. Lucky" the TV show as the two finest show themes written, and done by two of the great masters in more modern music: Henry Mancini and Nelson Riddle
Because of this show (my favorite as a kid) I ended up owning a brand new '66 Corvette roadster -"Rally Red" with a black interior and detachable hardtop. I had it for over 15 years. I wanted to travel the U.S. like Todd and Buzz, getting odd jobs as I went, but that part of the fantasy was never realized. Loved that car!
@Mickagume Did you travel Route 66 in it, though? Just had to ask. Route 66 was one of my favorite tv shows, too, I was a little kid, myself - don't remember too much about the plot - just remember the two guys in the vette on Route 66. Were they private detectives? The theme song stands out more than anything - loved it -watched the show to hear the song- the song had an "edge" - build-up of exicting things to come - when I grew up and could drive around in a cool car.
@CheckMate657879 I drove the Vette on parts of US 66, but I did not drive the length from Chicago to LA. (I couldn't have, because by that time, Route 66 was well on its way to being disected and virtually eliminated by the Intersate Highway System). As for the TV series: after the death of his father, Yale graduate Tod Stiles inherited a new Corvette and decided to drive across America with his friend Buzz Murdoch. They weren't private detectives - just two completely free guys on the road.
@Mickagume Thanks so much for replying. Your former vette sounds so exquisitely beautiful. A corvette is a car I've wanted for a few years now - had a family though and needed a larger vehicle but now that the kids are all gone - I'm thinking about it - still. Thanks for enlightening me about the plot of the show. I was about 7 years old when the show came on - didn't pay that much attention beyond the theme song. If they were just too free guys riding around - explains why I didn't get it.
I have this track on an UltraLounge comp CD...not only is the arrangement and performance absolutely brilliant, the recording quality is so far ahead of the compressed plastic-sounding mush that passes for modern audio it's ridiculous. Rich, lush, spacious, and dynamic...very few recording engineers today are as good as the greats from the golden age of hi-fi.
@TheB3Nut Yeah!! I got the same CD!, I just love taking the T-tops off my Camaro and cruising with this blaring out of the speakers...too cool! I just wanna keep on driving until I hit the West Coast..
I was about 8 years old when this show came on - always loved the music - have owned it on tv-show-sound-track lp's, over the years - still do as a matter of fact. I don't even remember what the show was about. But, I do remember loving this music, and taking my own fantastical journey.
I have this album myself--and the song is on the playlist of my Part 15 AM station. It's cool that a picture of a real U. S. 66 highway shield is on the cover of this album.
great example of nelson riddle's skill as a composer and not only an arranger for Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, etc. True classic that never grows old.
@schnellguy Anyone who thinks TV has improved in quality since the early '60s...indeed, anyone who thinks it's even as good today as it was then, should catch a few episodes of Route 66 and it will dispel them of that myth forever.
theme songs like this made you anticipate a great story..and you were privileged to watch it and be quite entertained...you will never see great TV like this again..
