Isn't 3M 77 like their permanent glue? I have a can of their 45 now. I have to admit the mineral spirits stripped it right off for you. 3M also makes a product for frisket tacking or mask adhesive which is for doing fine arts air brushing. That stuff comes right off and leaves no residue. You aren't going to find it at your local big box store though. Try an art store. It is called spray mount.
Coat your wood with blue painters tape first. Then apply your pattern to that. You get no residue on the wood, and it doesn't matter if you put too much glue on the pattern, as the painters tape comes off every time. Works like a dream.
@wolfmoonct Thanks for the comment. Many scrollers prefer this method over my tutorial. I have tried the tape method several times and always end up going back to the spray glue. The cheap masking tape from the dollar store works like the blue painters tape and is less expensive.
