  • Mmm, now all we need are lessons to distinguish ketones from carboxylic acids from anhydrides from alcohols from amines from amides from benzyl rings from aldehydes etc.

You are a huge help in this, think you are up for the challenge?

  • @bodinian Well, Carboxylic acids have both the -OH group and the =O group, while ketones and aldehydes have only the =O, so some of those you can tell apart. There are some defining characteristics, but each individual molecule will have its own signature and even the -OH and =O will be different because of the rest of the molecule contributes uniquely. I actually had only one class in this, so I'm sure someone else is much more qualified to take this to the next level.

  • @bodinian I'm glad it's helping. Good luck in all of your studies!

One more thought--if you really want to know about a new molecule, there are multiple techniques, that combine together give you a better picture than any technique individually. So, you'll also use H-NMR, UV, chemical tests, and other techniques to learn more about the structure. I doubt you'd have to figure out everything from an IR spectrum (even with a lot more guidance).

  • seeeeerrirous choonage!
