What is it that makes the exhaust flame / popping sound upon launch? What a fantastic vehicle you guys have built. I remember in auto mechanic's class in high school in '72-73...the rotary engine had just recently been released. I think they called it a "Wankel". They had much fewer moving parts...but the early ones had big problems. As I recall, the main problem was that water would find it's way into the engine. Is my memory correct? Thanks.....congrats for all your hard work and success!

@kncklesandwich don't get too cocky there, you are way off perspective. a loaded stock VW only weighs +-1,700 lbs. The stripped down racers much less. The weight those engines have to push is small with the bulk supported at the rear drive so no need for a real body frame. The worlds fastest 4cyl dragster is just over 6 seconds, the V8 fastest is just over 4 seconds. None the less that is some crazy speed and has to be one hell of a scary ride in a VW!

@bajo808 It has a rotary(wankel) engine from a mazda rx-series. They usually have two rotor engines, which is 1242 ccm's. Therefore, a 2 rotor engine is called a 13 B because it is a 1.3 liter, and a three rotor engine is called a 20 B because it is a 2 liter. Every rotor is 621 ccm's, there are examples of these engines up to 4 rotors, which is, obviously, a 26B.

I don't have any idea which one this has, but judging by the sound I believe it is a 20B...
