In Scotland we have a Bridge, The Tay Bridge which bridges the Firth of Tay (Firth is a Scottish word meaning estuary). The original collapsed in a storm and its piers still remain which you can see clearly when passing on the 'new' bridge. it is worth looking at. You may be able to see it through 'You Tube.'
