  • I saw Louis's play first, I can't understand how to play bass with thumb...then I was 12..

I got my first bass on 15, I hit 4th string with my thumb...then I remember Louis's sound.

Now I'm 46,I can play this song. it takes 30 years long...I respect Louis. He is the best!

  • Is this really played live?

  • TOP !

  • tylersfs - the shit is hilarious about the mic. How did you even catch that?

  • How can you keep your seat with jam in your face

  • Smoove Funk! And yes, I meant the way I spelled Smoove.

  • They have all their instruments, why not not play the tune live. Great funk!

  • Not live...overdub...

  • What happened to Louis Johnson's mike at 2:26...???? It just starts sliding down to the floor by itself!!

Maybe it couldn't take the funk - even though it was a recorded playback.

  • @tylersfs - Maybe the breeze coming from all that bass slapping.

  • This not Live unfortunately

  • OMG!! I remember when I saw this on the Midnight Special, I asked my mom for some pants like that. My dad had that "WT" look on his face..lol!! But The Midnight Special was the coolest show on back in the day.

  • The Brothers Johnson rule! It is so great that we have technology like YouTube to preserve such great music! This song is one of my favorites....so up beat...such good feeling music...Much, much more classy than alot of the stuff produced today....Funk on Brothers Johnson!!!

  • not a live. you should change the name of your video

  • There He Is Again This Time He's In Gold ....Horn Player.... Anybody Know His Name holla

  • if this was really live, they wouldve raised the roof

  • It was fun working with those gigs on our, we were the best in the Land back in the day...Ex Sax player..!

  • Thanks for the post, but this in definetly not a live performance.

  • What was the director thinking to take the camera off of Louis while he was doing his bass solo... idiots!!!! Louis Johnson IS the master of the Funk Bass!!

  • Takes me back to my parent's house listening to 33's on the record player. Are the Brothers Johnson still alive? The bass player reminds me of some of the Bootsy Collins posts on Youtube. Great Post!

  • Live?..........NOOOOT

  • SO not live!

  • Real Music Bruh King Malay Approves this message

  • All your bass are belong to Louis. What a legend.

  • WOW ITS LIKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE - I AGREE WITH dbt1160 - artists today are not really artists they dont even play an instrument - i wish i could go back to those days !

  • Wow!! the Bass is ssoooo tight!Louis is one of the Best bassist ever!!! no doubt about it thumbs up if u all agree!!

  • You can't fake the funk!

  • the prez shoud allot a stimulus package just for 24 hours and let one of the best new york producers do his thing and gather all of the best of the best and reinact all the best of the late 70's and early 80's groups such as the brother johnsons and macfadden and whitehead just to name a few (they know who did it back then) and have the biggest baddest block party of all times. the function would be so nice, it'll go down in history four five times.....HOLLA ..my wish.I can dream, can't I ?

  • @fairfax17 THAT WOULD BE AWESOME

  • These guys actually played their instruments and actually sang without a computer tweaking their voice ! These guys could play live ! No computers no syns ! The real deal punks !

  • it makes me sad i play this sorta stuff all the time and no one in cleveland ohio is doing any sort of good dance music not even sa some couple throing an 80s or 70s music style wedding..i have to music man bass's even! I heard this stuff when i was a little kid and it would get stuck in my head an dplay over and over and OVER once i was ablt to take my frustrations out on an instrument the rest was history..any other bass fans drop me a line!

    D

  • Live but Not Really Live...They should plug their guitars in first...LOL

  • High school jam, yeah!!!!!!

  • this is not live, it sounds exactly like the recorded version it's easy to tell not fooling me..

  • jus wish i was in the 80"s.......! disco funk rulezzz!

  • I love the song, but this isn't LIVE....

  • @FroFunk You are correct. They were live on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert, but not here. I hate lip sinc crap.

  • OMG I miss this music

  • No doubt, big pimpin at it's best!

  • THIS SONG IS KICKASS!!!!!THUMBS UP IF U THINK SO TO

  • Esa es mimusica...jamas pasara de moda....que tiempos aquellos!!

  • La musica FUNK LA MEJOR DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOSSSSSS

  • check out ashford and simpson

  • this was the original shit, this people never sampled, never copied anyone.

today it is nothing but remakes and crap nobody can listen to.

i feel so lucky that experienced this music to the fullest. awesome.

  • @KewazingaBabinga I was going to say all that but you beat me to it. Screw all the posers with their little sample boxes. Can we put some starch in the shirt and get back to the real deal? This music is still alive and well in the hearts of those who remember real music.

  • @KewazingaBabinga

this is a good song ,but people have been remaking, sampling and copying music forever. Its the gifted musicianship, talent and quality that sets the old stuff apart ,from todays junk. The bros werent singers, they were musicians.Quincy had started over producing This performance was lip synched, the begininng of the end.

  • god the stuff we would wear. satin pants and its okay

  • This song was 30 years ago no.10 in the world charts

  • This song is the JAM. Enough said......

  • This song always puts a smile on my face I love it!!!

  • This song was 30 years ago no.7 in the world charts

  • Oh yes this was the business!

  • i wish i was born in 76 so cold could of got some of these tunes the 80s hip hop i woulda been in my teens and 90 i would of been grown 2 bad huh yall had all the fly shit!!! at least i got to enjoy the 90s but i was born in 84. todays music is wack!!! got me on youtube looking at the older days.

  • @412DYZZY .....................I was 20 years old when this song was out....im from Houston,TX....Bros. Johnson came to the Astrodome from a funk festival in 1981, along with Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones to name a few.....They put on a hell of a show....they were in their prime, full of energy, and the sound was perfect!!!.....yes, that was a beautiful era, you would have loved it

  • This song was 30 years ago no.7 in the world charts

  • what a amazing dance nights at Portugal Costa da Caparica. I miss it ......

  • This song was 30 years ago no.9 in the world charts

  • This song was in the top 10 in the world charts in 1980

  • wha...?! they sing this too? i am truly impressed. these days are gone forever...makes me want to cry

  • i can listen to this song all day.

  • Man today R&B is fucked up, I like soul music from the 70's and 80's because it was good music. Even know I am 32 year old I used to listen to this when I was a kid. I miss the 80's

  • This song was 30 years ago no.9 in the world charts

  • I dig those threads,I wouldnt wear them alone in a house for money and these ppl are on TV

  • That's the original recoreded track in the background. Listen to the beginning and you can hear strings. plus, Louis is NOT playing the solo live, he's just shadowing (lip-syncing for an instrument. Boooooooo!!!!!

  • All though i suspect that this might be playback due to 4:00 ... =

  • One of the reasons for me buying a Musicman StingRay! =D

  • @Lifeofbass another good reason is listening to bernard edwards play (:

  • i was a big Brothers Johnson fan back then, good to see this

  • This song was 30 years ago no.9 in the world charts

  • 2:25!!! ;) ol' Thunder Thumbs is slappin'!!!!! but, at 2:40, i think that's a keyboard, not a guitar!! ;)

  • I have the sudden urge to learn to disco.

  • That is one bad ass song.... what a great jam! Thanks

  • All Hail George and Louis Johnson! Damn, these guys were so good.

  • too bad the music isn't live, wanted to heat LJ with his stingray bass on that

  • coldest name ever...i bet they put their needles in plenty grooves, LOL!!!

  • The performance may have been "live" but the music most certainly wasn't. Shame.

  • @iwantastiffdrink Absolutely correct. And the sad part is they did the single version with the shortened bass solo.

  • Dang, I almost forgot about this song. Even when I was a kid, I was feeling this!

  • I wish people dressed like this on a daily basis.

  • I was in the eighth grade at Istrouma middle school. My brother and I used to play this at the Friday afternoon sock-hops all the time! Those were the good ol' days!

  • The Midnight Special was the s--t, back in the day!

  • Still awesome even though it's lip-synced. thanks for sharing.

  • This is not a live performance. It's lip-synced. No wonder the crowd is kinda dead.

  • The Brothers Johnson are the real deal. These cats really "got the funk"....thank you for posting.

  • WOW! You will never see music like this again.

  • this is the real shit

  • What a groove - class - what a vibe... you just want to get up and go for it....so very cool not to mention Louis Johnson's legendary piece of bass playing.. still wicked after all these years! Awesome!

  • Me and my dad use to watch the Midnight Special with the last wolfman jack. Classic. Love the brothers johnson.

  • That's funny

  • fuzzyhaskins is negative person

  • this video is very nyce makes me feel young when I see couple dancers is cool excellent Bros Johnson

  • These brothers were the best!

  • Too bad this isn't actually a live version, for I've seen them live and I tell ya them boyz don't want it !!! Louis be killin' that bass, that was a gr8 concert, would be cool if someone had an actual live video from that time period cause one thing you don't get on a backing track is the funky improvisions they do on their songs live...

  • Louis is the Best! Stop the race shit and just enjoy real music...

  • this is not live

  • Your right, it's not live but the music from them is...

  • You nailed it. Funk/R& B in which the musicians actually PLAY is becoming a lost art. You wanna talk canned? Listen to today's crap. This may be "synced," but it's more real than most of the slop on the air right now.

  • You should come to Minnesota, the jam band scene up here has quite a few good funk bands. Funk is still popular up here.

  • @dbt1160 Yeah this guys actually played the instruments and sang on this recording ! No tweaking ! Back in the day of real talent !

  • they are fucking miming! it is exactly the same as the album version!

  • Irreplacable muzic.............

  • I remember watching this on the Midnight Special in 1980. It was good stuff then, like its good stuff now. The trumpet player is the funkiest dude of them all. He is in some other Brothers Johnson videos and he tears it up in them as well. Thanks for posting.

  • Esto si es musica!...

  • Even toward the very end of it, that disco music just didn't want to leave quietly, huh?

  • Bring back the seventies..............I wish

  • Extremely entertaining performance. Thanks for posting this. However transfering this to Youtube somehow put a good 40 pounds on everyone. If you watch the Midnight Special video, the Brothers Johnson are skinny, and the white guy dancing with the blonde is skinny as a beanpole - but he had the moves!

  • Great song, Louis johnson kicks ass and great playback..!

  • loipsyncing to the max, i remember burt sugarman saying on this his show ,all shows and acts were lkive, that was one of the conditions for the show, i guess by 1980,money issues changed things

  • I remember this song like it was yesterday. Brothers Johnson keep the grove. Right ON Right On Brother ........Cool

  • super song

  • The days of real pop music, and musicians.

  • Of course it's not live, this stuff almost never is (and that goes for today's stuff too) but DAMN can Louis play. One funky cat! (But i have a few issues with the red suit...)

  • it aint live

  • ooo weeee i love that funky stuff

  • they are in this months jet mag

  • love seeing this saw Louis Johnson preform last week with this song really of the hook that was :)

  • MUN7001 - you call me racist and you dont even know what color my skin is dude.quit being typical

  • The FUNKIEST DUO in the history of music!!! The Brothers Johnson!!

    G R E A T B A S S SLAP SOLO!!!!!

  • Great song, but this certainly not Live, but some handclapping and cheering mixed in. No offence, great song.

  • yeah it's not live, you can see it when louis is playin' the bass slap solo and when the rhythm turns to Finger bass he stills slappin'! but they rule!

  • basically do it yourself or shutup bitch

  • i hope im not being racist- but i wish black musicians still dressed like this with the jheri curl and continued to play music that sounds like music- how did we go from this to hip hop

  • you are being racist, first off why do black people have to dress like that for you, why dont you do it yourself, second they do play music like this still and its not as popular as it was before, but youu seem to want to assume that they dont cause you dont see it as well, just like the faggot eddie mac who wants things served to him on a platter, thats your thinking that blacks have to work specifically for you , hence slavery, and racism that is trapped in your mind

  • Enjoy it because u will never see talent like this again in the black industry thank you for the memories!!

  • a complete loser, who doesnt know anything about the UNDERGROUND SCENE< JACKASS, of course you'll see shit like this still, it just wont be on big tv stattions, so what, look for your shit, it doesnt have to be on a big tv station to be enjoyed

big tv stations and music companies are losing money fast anyways, myspace and P2P sharing are finally taking over, and giving artists their right stuff lol, faggot ass

  • go tell that to your momma boy!!

  • lol i'll tell her how most of the men her age are verystupid people

  • The guys from this era INVENTED cool. omg...

  • dammmmmmmmmm look at 2:25

never have i seen a bassplayer play with so much feel and emotion..such groove

  • ...and such silky spandex.

  • lol... you KNOW you're cool when u can wear some shit like that and STILL be a bad-ass mofo... Those guys look ridiculous in EVERY sense of the word.... but I still can't help but feel that they utterly REEK of awesome!! Even the outfits are cool on them!!! lmao

  • they had to tape their penis to their assholes so they wouldn't scare the audience.

  • there clothes look`s so groove and so disco and it makes me laugh

  • Yes man,that's right.But why... a thumb down...i didn't said anything bad,maybe not too precise...but...i'm confused. Haaa that's a joke :) Marry X-mas! Cheers!

  • Back in the day, if you had on a strapless dress or swimsuit (if it was a pool party), you knew exactly how many counts you had before you must pull your top up again, lol. That pull-up was ingrained, brothas! Drilled in with practice...

Love this song! Good record & it's easy to dance to! Wait: was that the wrong rate-a-record? I watched both shows :D

  • the song is written by Quincy Jones.Great post!thnx!

  • It was actually written by Rod Temperton, but the whole album was produced by Quincy indeed.

  • this video rocked. Lip synched or not. It was awesome.

  • even though you can tell it's synced over...doesn't change the fact that these guys can funk it out. Louis Johnson is awesome on bass!!!

  • Great song, great video, but sadly I was hoping that it was truly 'live' and not just lip synched, which it obviously is.

  • Nice video quality and audio. I bet this is from the DVD.

  • This rulez!

  • holy shit!

  • Hot pants and a MusicMan!

  • CLASSIC! great post ,just love it>

  • This one is a winner!
