2. Why didn't head coach Forrest Gregg or the offensive coordinatior get Ken Anderson to use a play-action pass or a fade-out to his tight end Dan Ross, who was burning the 49er defense at the time with what would be eleven receptions, 104 yards, and two touchdowns in Super Bowl XVI. I would think that if you have a player who is doing well against the defense, you go to that guy for a big play.
When I watch the 49ers goal-line stand, there are some questions that boggle me about the Bengals offensive decisions in that series (other than the bad blocks):
1. Why is David Verser (a wide receiver) in the goal-line offense? The Bengals had three tight ends on their team (Ross, Harris, and Bass). Why wasn't Don Bass there in that situation as a third tight end? With a third tight end, the Bengals would of had more muscle and power in getting their backs in the end zone.
Remember the three (non-racist) "little monkey" comments made by Cosell? Who was #2 about??
#1. "That little monkey. The theory was that he was too small for pro football." - 08/29/1972 Chiefs @ Giants preseason HOF game (re: Mike Adamle - white guy)
#2. "Look at that little monkey run!" (re: an unknown player, white or black? game, punt/kickoff return?) FREDDIE SOLOMON???
#3. "That little monkey gets loose doesn't he." - 09/05/1983 Dallas @ Washington (re: Alvin Garrett - black guy)
Best, most exciting game in SB history. Bengals made critical mistake at opening and seemed to invite a route. Then an incredible Anderson-led comeback that "should" have won it, except for 2 missed blocks and Pete Johnson not carrying his load. Most memorable moments: 1. late Collinsworth long-ball reception amidst the fog (sheer beauty); 1. Anderson walking off the field with his son on his shoulders, gracious as always, a winner even in defeat.
Montana was a relatively minor factor, his statistics dwarfed by those of Ken Anderson. At this stage Montana was a dink and dunk quarterback in the Wash system, while Anderson was launching perfectly thrown spirals with pin-point accuracy against an admittedly superior defense. Look at Anderson's grit under fire and a 20-0 score deficit, and then the score at the end of the game in spite of the goal-line stand above. Anderson's career #s are better than most HOF qtrbks! And he could run.
@kgmule agreed same here. i love the beginning of this part.. the music.. then the sounds of tackling, then dramatic music at the same time dramatic script
Man, I am a Bengals fan, and of course I wish they won both super bowls, but BOTH games were amazing. Especially that goal line stand, WOW. I heard about these games, and thought "how the heck did the 1988 Bengals get stopped four times at the goal?!", now I know.
Hopefully the 2009 bengals can make up for these losses, WHO DEY! and much respect to the '80s 49ers.
Both SB's between the Niners n Bengals were Great. Cincy gave it their all in both games, but SF simply would not be denied. Easily the Greatest goal line stand in SB history. Niners always seemed to be the team coming through in the clutch wether it be on offense or defense,- simply the Greatest. Much respect to the Bengals.
@manopike 2 missed blocks? Was the Bengals offensive line their achilles heal? Great D stand by the 49ers, but 2 missed asignments is inexusable for a simple run play.
@quincee33 I'm 23. I've been watching this film since I was eight or so. That's the best analysis I've heard on it. Two missed assignments cost them a Super Bowl. That's all it takes.
@2SANFRANCISCO Neither game was anywhere near great, except to groupies of both teams. It was definitely the best goal line stand though.
Cinci wasn't as smart, which is part of why they lost. Very little imagination on the play calling on those goal line plays, making it that much easier for the league's smartest defense to make the stops.
@hardcorehouse ''Neither game was anywhere near great'' ?? ..well, that will be your little secret. Also, imagination is never required,- you either execute, or you don't, and the SF executed better. Bengals were simply beaten byt the Niners, but put up great efforts,- primarily in the second half defensively in this game. Their early mistakes did them in, and in the second SB matchup,- Montana was going to win the end...period. Both games were great.
@2SANFRANCISCO Both games were ho-hum for the most part, except for the ending of the second one. Both featured large swaths of lameness, and the first one just wasn't that close. "SF executed better" lol that's your rationalization SF was better and smarter and it wasn't close thanks to Cinci's ineptitude, and ineptitude doesn't equal great. That goal line stand was no accident by either party.
@hardcorehouse Nothing is ''rationalization'' , its all fact,,- your self righteous opinion throwing is the only ''lol'' here. The team that executes better, and makes fewer mistakes wins. SF did nothing offensively in the second half of this game,- and still won with ''ineptitude''. Both games were great,- you don't need fireworks and flawless execution to be great,- hence the beauty of the game. Yes, the goal line stand was certainly ''no accident''. lol
That stand was the game no doubt I wish the Bengals would've faked giving the ball to Johnson because everyone knew Johnson was going to get the ball. The problem was the Bengals ran that play all year behind Anthony Munoz the left tackle and scored every time. I can't figure out why in the biggest game of the year they switched to running the ball behind Mike Wilson the right tackle. It just didn't make sense to me and other Bengals fans!!
pgraybengal and you know this problem still haunts the bengals today, they dont call plays to win the darn game, its like ARE THEY SCARED TO SUCCEED?!
dude im not saying the 49ers shouldve lost the game. im just saying that if they had the kind of offensive production that they had in the third quarter, they wouldve been screwed. they only gained 4 yards on 8 plays. but yea i can see montana rallying them back to put points on the board and put cincy away. what started out as a joke turned out to be one of the best super bowl games of all time.
that goalline stand was the game right there. if johnson couldve split through the 49er defense, the final score would be 28-26 and the bengals wouldve been super bowl champs. kinda like harrison's 100 yard interception return in this years super bowl. it just goes to show in the history of the big game, one play can decide the outcome.

@caponsacchi Not even in the top 10 most exciting SBs, because Cincinnati just wasn't good enough to keep it close.

@caponsacchi Montana was always great, from the beginning. The catch happened before this SB.
Neither of the SF-Cinci SBs was great actually, except to fans of those teams.
